11월 11일 11시 부산 전역에 1분간 추모 사이렌이 울렸다.

 

세계평화와 자유 수호를 위해 목숨 바친 22개국 6.25전쟁 참전 유엔군 영령의 숭고한 희생과 공헌을 기억하고, 추모하기 위해 부산 유엔기념공원을 향해 전 세계가 동시 1분간 묵념을 올렸다.

올해 첫 법정기념일로 지정되어 '자부와 명예(Pride & Honor)'을 주제로 한 추모 행사 '턴투워드 부산' 유엔참전용사 국제추모식이 11월 11일 오전 11시 유엔기념공원에서 개최됐다.

 

유엔참전용사 국제추모의 날은 2007년 6․25 참전용사인 캐나다인 ‘빈센트 커트니’ 씨가 제안해 매년 열리고 있으며, 전 세계가 부산을 향해 하나 되는 특별한 행사다.

 

이번 행사는 정세균 국무총리, 국민의힘 김종인 비상대책위원장, 변성완 부산시장권한대행 등 150여명의 관계자가 참여한 가운데 헌화 및 1분간 묵념, 참전국기 입장 등 추모식, 기념공연, 전사자 묘역참배 등으로 진행됐다.

묵념 전에 묘지가 조성된 이래 최초로 태극기, 유엔기 등 22개 참전국기가 동시에 게양되고, 22개 참전국 대표가 유엔군 전사자에 대하여 헌화했다.

 

또한 11시 정각에 맞춰 공군 블랙이글스의 추모비행이 시작되었고, 이어 부산시 전역에 추모 사이렌이 울리자, 묵념과 함께 유엔전몰장병들의 희생과 공헌을 기리기 위한 조포 21발이 발사됐다.

 

이날 추모식에 참석한 정세균 국무총리는 기념사를 통해 "한국 정부는 참전용사들께 더욱 보답하고자 6.25전쟁 70주년이 되는 올해, '유엔참전용사 명예선양법'을 제정해, 오늘 추모식을 법정 기념식으로 격상했다"며 "앞으로도 기념식의 의미를 기억하며, ‘턴투워드부산’이 세계가 주목하는 추모행사가 되도록 정성을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "70년 전 세계 22개국의 수많은 청년들은 ‘옳은 이유’로 6.25전쟁에 참전했다"면서 "대한민국의 자유와 평화를 수호하는 옳은 일이었다. 오직 세계평화를 지키겠다는 일념이었으며, 유엔군 참전용사들의 옳은 행동은 오늘의 대한민국을 있게 한 희망의 불씨였다"고 강조했다.

 

그러면서 "유엔참전국과의 동맹을 더욱 굳건하게 지켜가겠다"며 "인류의 ‘더 나은 회복’과 세계평화를 위한 국제협력에 앞장서겠다"고 다짐했다.

 

또한 "강한 국방을 바탕으로, 항구적인 한반도 평화체제를 위해 끊임없이 대화를 모색하겠다"며 "할 수 있는 일부터 차근차근 해나가고, 평화로 나아가는 ‘새로운 길’도 찾겠다"고 밝혔다.

 

이날 추모식은 유엔군 전사자 및 실종자 40,896명의 이름이 새겨진 추모명비 앞에서 유엔 참전용사들과 참전국 후손들을 화상으로 연결하는 비대면 행사로 치러졌다.

행사는 미국 참전용사의 후손인 조나단 프로우트(Jonathan Prout)의 사회로, 국민의례, 기념공연(1막) ’할아버지의 낡은 시계‘, 참전국대표 인사말씀, 기념사, 기념공연(2막) ’자부와 명예‘ 순으로 진행됐다.

 

기념공연(1막) ’할아버지의 낡은 시계‘는 영국 참전용사 후손 데이비 알렉스(Davey Alex, 한국에 재학 중)가 해설을 맡아 진행했다.

 

공연은 미국 참전용사 리처드 캐드월러더(Richard Cadwallader)가 2013년 전후 60년만에 ‘화상 소녀’ 김연순 씨를 만나 손목시계를 건네는 장면을 배경으로 해외 참전용사 후손들의 노래가 영상으로 함께 어우러지며 감동을 자아냈다.

기념공연(2막) ‘자부와 명예’는 영국의 유명 오디션 프로그램인 ‘브리튼스 갓 탤런트(Britain’s Got Talent)’에서 지난해 우승자인 영국 참전용사 콜린 테커리(Colin Thackery)와 가수 솔지가 '내 날개 밑에 부는 바람(Wind beneath my wings)‘이라는 노래를 화상 협연을 했다.

 

마지막 참배는 정세균 총리가 미국 위트콤(Whitcomb) 준장 묘역과 캐나다 허시(Hearsey) 형제, 호주 휴머스톤(Humerston) 부부 묘역을 찾아 평화의 사도 메달을 헌정하고 고귀한 희생을 기렸다.

The commemorative performance (act 2)'Pride and Fame' was held by British veteran Colin Thackery and singer Solji, who won last year's British audition program'Britain's Got Talent'. He performed a video concert with the song'Wind beneath my wings'.
