The 'International Geoforum' was held on the 28th and 29th at BEXCO and Busan Geopark in Haeundae-gu to prepare comprehensive measures for Busan UNESCO Global Geopark certification.

This forum was prepared to pray for the UNESCO Global Geopark certification in Busan and the successful hosting of the 37th IGC 2024.

UNESCO Global Geopark is one of the three major protection systems designated by UNESCO along with World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves. By preserving topographical and geological heritage and areas with ecological, historical and cultural values, and using them for research and education, and operating geotourism for them, It is intended to be used for sustainable development.

Global geopark experts from home and abroad participated in the forum. Experts who are members of the Global Geopark Verification Committee are scholars who have directly participated in the certification process and act as advisors for the UNESCO Global Geopark certification in Busan.

At 11 am on the 28th, ▲ the opening ceremony and ▲ the IGC trophy delivery ceremony were held. At the trophy delivery ceremony, the Indian Organizing Committee, which led the 36th General Assembly in March, delivered the trophy to the next host country, the Korean Organizing Committee, announcing the full-fledged start of the 37th IGC 2024.

Next, ▲Soojae Lee, an expert in the field of geoparks in Korea, emeritus research fellow at the Korea Environmental Research Institute, gave a keynote lecture on the theme of ‘Wonderful Life in Geoparks’. ▲In Session 1, the validity of Busan UNESCO Global Geopark certification and domestic certification cases such as Mudeungsan and Jeju Island were presented.

▲In Session 2, foreign experts such as Guy Martini, Chairman of UNESCO Global Geopark, Patrick Mckeever, Special Advisory Committee for UNESCO Global Geopark, and Young Ng, an official from Danhasan UNESCO Geopark, participated in 'Geopark and He gave a lecture on 'Geotourism'.

Special Advisor, Patrick Mckeever, will visit Busan to give a presentation on the topic and participate in the field visit on the 29th to give detailed advice in preparation for UNESCO's on-site inspection at the end of September.

The field visit will be held at the ▲Songdo Peninsula geological site, where the ‘Dadaepo Formation’, a stratum formed in the Cretaceous period, forms an overwhelming scenery, and ▲Sinpyeongso Park, a preliminary geological site where related research is being conducted after the recent discovery of dinosaur footprints.

On the other hand, if the site evaluation is successfully completed in September, UNESCO's certification is expected early next year, so the city plans to focus on this year as the golden time for UNESCO Global Geopark certification.

The city will build a Geopark Visitor Center and information board, train geological commentators to make it easier for tourists to visit geosites, and promote the value of Busan geosites through website reorganization and academic research services.

In addition, programs for local residents and programs linked to schools are being operated to form a civic consensus, and various policies are being implemented to make Busan's nature a tourist attraction, such as developing a geo-brand.

Through this, the certification of the 37th IGC 2024, which will be attended by more than 6,000 people from 100 countries, will be completed, thereby promoting Busan's geological attractions worldwide and maximizing the synergy effect with the Geological Assembly.
