[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 커스티 코번트리 IOC 위원장이 2일 오후 부산벡스코에서 열린 세계반도핑기구(WADA) 총회 개막식에서 연설을 통해 '클린 스포츠의 중요성'과 '선수 보호, 글로벌 반도핑 커뮤니티의 단결 필요성'을 강조했다.

커스티 코번트리 위원장은 자신이 선수로서 출발대에 섰던 경험을 언급하며, “훈련한 모든 것이 마지막 순간에 달려 있다는 것을 알았다"면서 "중요한 것은 경쟁뿐만 아니라 옆에 있는 모든 선수가 그 자리를 정당하게 얻었을 때 느끼는 신뢰였다. 바로 그 신뢰가 스포츠의 마법을 부여하고 사람들을 하나로 묶는 힘”이라고 말했다.

그는 모든 클린(Clean) 운동선수(athletes)가 공정한 경쟁권을 누려야 하며, 새로운 물질과 기술이 등장해도 “절대 포기할 수 없는 것은 공정성과 정직성, 클린 경쟁에 대한 약속”이라고 강조했다.

코번트리 위원장은 WADA, 각국 반도핑기구(NADOs), 공공 당국, 올림픽 운동 등 각 주체의 책임을 설명하며, “모든 파트너가 역할을 수행할 때 시스템이 강해지고 신뢰가 커진다. 하지만 한 부분이라도 실패하면 전체 커뮤니티의 신뢰도가 손상된다. 상호 존중과 공유 책임에 기반한 협력이 앞으로 나아갈 유일한 길”이라고 밝혔다.

그는 오는 2026년 밀라노·코르티나 동계올림픽을 언급하며, “이 대회는 선수들이 신뢰할 수 있는 클린 경쟁과 팬들이 믿고 영감을 받을 수 있는 퍼포먼스를 세상에 보여줄 기회”라고 말했다. 이어 “시스템과 절차를 넘어 가장 중요한 것은 공정성, 단결, 청렴성이라는 공유된 정신”이라고 강조했다.

코번트리 위원장은 새 세계반도핑코드 제정 과정에서의 협력을 소개하며, “지난 1년간 반도핑 커뮤니티, 정부, NADOs(국가도핑방지기구), 스포츠 단체, 선수들의 목소리가 모여 운동을 강화했다. 특히 선수 중심의 협의가 돋보였고, 주변인의 책임을 명확히 하는 것이 가장 중요한 진전 중 하나”라고 밝혔다.

그는 도핑을 강요받은 선수들이 용기를 내어 문제를 폭로하도록 장려하며, 이를 가능하게 한 주변인에 대해서는 제로 톨러런스를 적용해야 한다고 강조했다. 코번트리 위원장은 “공공 당국만이 선수의 건강을 해치는 자들에게 진정한 억제 조치를 취할 권한을 가진다. 선수들이 안전하고 자유롭게 경쟁할 수 있는 환경을 만들어야 한다”고 말했다.

연설을 마무리하며, 코반트리 위원장은 “우리의 에너지를 진짜 중요한 것, 즉 선수를 최우선으로 하고 하나의 글로벌 팀으로 일하는 데 집중해야 한다. 클린 스포츠는 정책이 아니라 약속이며, 공정한 경쟁을 꿈꾸는 모든 선수와 스포츠 가치를 믿는 모든 젊은이에게 하는 약속”이라고 당부했다.

IOC Chair Kirsty Coventry Emphasizes Global Unity and Athlete-First Approach for Clean Sport

On the afternoon of the 2nd at BEXCO in Busan, IOC Chair Kirsty Coventry delivered a speech at the opening of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) General Assembly, highlighting the importance of clean sport, athlete protection, and the need for global unity within the anti-doping community.

Coventry spoke about her experiences as an athlete, stating, “I understood that everything I trained for depended on that final moment at the starting line. What mattered most was not only the competition but also the trust that everyone next to me had earned their place fairly. That trust gives magic to sport and unites people.”

She emphasized that all clean athletes must enjoy fair competition and that, despite new substances and technologies, “what we can never compromise on is fairness, honesty, and the commitment to clean competition.”

Coventry outlined the responsibilities of WADA, national anti-doping organizations (NADOs), public authorities, and the Olympic Movement, stating, “When every partner fulfills their role, the system strengthens and trust grows. But if any part fails, the credibility of the entire community is damaged. Cooperation based on mutual respect and shared responsibility is the only way forward.”

Referring to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, she said, “This event is an opportunity to showcase clean competition that athletes can trust and performances that inspire fans.” She added, “Beyond systems and procedures, the most important driving force is the shared spirit of fairness, unity, and integrity.”

Coventry highlighted the collaborative process behind the new World Anti-Doping Code, stating, “Over the past year, voices from the anti-doping community, governments, NADOs, sports organizations, and athletes have strengthened the movement. Athlete-centered consultations stood out, and clarifying the responsibilities of entourages is one of the most important advancements.”

She urged athletes pressured into doping to speak out courageously and stressed zero tolerance for those enabling doping. Coventry said, “Only public authorities have the power to take genuine deterrent measures against those who harm athletes’ health. We must create an environment where athletes can compete safely and freely.”

In closing, Coventry called on all stakeholders to focus on what truly matters, saying, “We must prioritize athletes and work as one global team. Clean sport is not just a policy—it is a promise, a pledge to every athlete who dreams of fair competition and to every young person who believes in the values of sport.”
