[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시는 벡스코에서 1일부터 5일까지 열리고 있는 ‘2025 세계도핑방지기구 총회(World Conference on Doping in Sport)’를 계기로 국제 스포츠계 주요 인사들과 잇달아 만나며 ‘스포츠 외교 허브 도시’로서의 입지를 강화하고 있다.

 

시는 이번 총회를 부산의 국제 스포츠 네트워크 확장과 대회 유치 경쟁력 확보의 기회로 삼고, 글로벌 스포츠 중심지 도약의 발판을 마련하겠다는 구상이다.  

 

IOC·WADA 등 국제 스포츠 지도자들과 연쇄 회동  

지난 2일 총회 개회식에 참석한 박형준 시장은 커스티 리 코번트리(Kirsty Leigh Coventry) IOC 위원장, 토마스 바흐(Thomas Bach) 전 IOC 위원장, 위톨드 반카(Witold Banka) 세계도핑방지기구(WADA) 회장, 고지 무로후시(Koji Murofushi) 전 일본 스포츠청장 등 세계 스포츠계 핵심 인사들과 잇달아 만남을 가졌다.  

 

시는 이 자리에서 부산이 보유한 해양스포츠와 생활체육 기반, 그리고 국제행사 운영 경험을 소개하며 향후 다양한 국제 스포츠대회 유치와 스포츠산업 정책 협력 방안을 논의했다. 박 시장은 “부산이 아시아 대표 스포츠도시로 성장하기 위해서는 국제스포츠기구와의 긴밀한 협력이 필수적”이라며 향후 IOC 및 WADA와의 교류 확대 의지를 밝혔다.

아제르바이잔과 스포츠도시 발전 경험 공유  

같은 날 개회식 이후에는 파리드 가이보프(Farid Gayibov) 아제르바이잔 청소년체육부 장관과 공식 접견이 진행됐다. 벡스코 제1전시장 3층 회의실에서 약 20분간 이어진 회의에서 양측은 체육정책의 추진 경험을 공유하고, 글로벌 스포츠 이벤트 공동 유치와 스포츠 외교 확대 방안을 협의했다.  

 

아제르바이잔의 수도 바쿠는 2025년 UFC 대회 개최, F1 그랑프리 개최 연장, 2026년 ‘세계 스포츠 수도(World Capital of Sport)’ 지정 등 국제 스포츠 행사 유치 경험을 바탕으로 ‘스포츠 산업 중심 도시’로 도약했다. 양측은 이러한 사례를 중심으로 정보를 지속 공유하며 국제대회 유치와 스포츠 교류 분야에서 협력을 강화하기로 했다.  

 

UAE와 정책·산업 협력 논의  

이어 3일 오전 시청에서는 가님 알하지리(Ghanim Alhajeri) 아랍에미리트연합국(UAE) 체육부 차관과의 공식 접견을 했다. 이번 접견에서는 체육정책 발전 방향, 스포츠 산업 활성화, 글로벌 이벤트 개발 등 폭넓은 분야에서 협력 방안을 논의했다.  

 

UAE는 ‘국가체육전략 2031’을 수립해 엘리트 스포츠와 생활체육을 균형 있게 육성 중이며, 부산시의 자매도시인 두바이는 스포츠를 도시 전략의 핵심 산업으로 삼고 국제 스포츠엔터테인먼트 자유구역 조성을 추진하는 등 글로벌 스포츠도시 모델을 구현하고 있다. 시는 두바이와 유사한 도시 비전을 가진 만큼 향후 교류·협력 확대 가능성이 높다고 평가했다.

스포츠 외교 확대 통한 글로벌 허브도시 도약  

부산시는 이번 총회를 계기로 강화된 스포츠 외교 네트워크를 토대로, 향후 국제 스포츠대회 유치 확대, 해외 스포츠 기관과의 공동 프로젝트 추진, 생활체육 활성화를 연계한 산업 성장 방안 등을 적극 추진할 계획이다.  

 

박형준 시장은 “이번 총회는 부산이 세계 스포츠계의 주목을 받는 계기가 되었으며, 각국의 정책과 경험을 공유하며 스포츠 외교를 한층 강화할 수 있었다”며 “이를 계기로 부산이 명실상부한 글로벌 스포츠 허브도시로 자리매김할 수 있도록 단계적 실행 전략을 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.

-City Expands Global Ties with IOC, WADA, UAE, and Azerbaijan to Build a Foundation as a Global Sports Hub**  

 

The City of Busan, led by Mayor Park Heong-joon, is using the ongoing “2025 World Conference on Doping in Sport” at BEXCO (December 1–5) as a platform to expand its global sports diplomacy network. By engaging in a series of bilateral meetings with leading international sports officials, the city aims to strengthen its role as an emerging hub for international sports and develop long-term partnerships to boost its global presence.  

 

Meetings with IOC and WADA Leaders  

On December 2, Mayor Park met with key global sports figures attending the conference, including Kirsty Leigh Coventry, Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission; former IOC President Thomas Bach; Witold Bańka, President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA); and Koji Murofushi, former Commissioner of Japan’s Sports Agency.  

 

During the meetings, the parties discussed ways to deepen cooperation in sports administration, event hosting, and sports industry development. Mayor Park highlighted Busan’s strengths in marine and community sports, its experience in hosting international events, and its commitment to sustainable sports growth. He emphasized that collaboration with global organizations such as the IOC and WADA is key to making Busan a leading sports city in Asia.  

 

Sharing Experiences with Azerbaijan’s Sports Development  

Following the conference’s opening ceremony, Park held an official meeting with Farid Gayibov, Minister of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan, at BEXCO’s meeting hall. The 20-minute session focused on sharing insights into sports policy implementation, attracting major international events, and expanding sports diplomacy cooperation.  

 

Minister Gayibov introduced Baku’s rise as a global sports destination, citing its successful hosting of the UFC and F1 Grand Prix events, its designation as the World Capital of Sport for 2026, and its role as the host city of the SportAccord World Sport & Business Summit. Both sides agreed to continue exchanging expertise and explore future partnership opportunities based on these achievements.  

 

Cooperation with the United Arab Emirates  

On the morning of December 3, Mayor Park hosted Ghanim Alhajeri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), at Busan City Hall. During their meeting, the two sides discussed future cooperation in developing sports policy, revitalizing the sports industry, and creating international sports events.  

 

The UAE has established its “National Sports Strategy 2031” to promote both elite and grassroots sports participation. The city of Dubai, Busan’s sister city and the UAE’s largest metropolis, was noted as a leading global sports city where sports are positioned as a core part of metropolitan strategy. Busan views Dubai as a model for its own citizen-oriented sports vision and aims to expand cooperation between the two cities.  

 

Laying the Groundwork for a Global Sports Hub  

Building upon the strengthened network achieved through the WADA Conference, Busan plans to pursue a series of initiatives designed to attract more international sporting events, foster the growth of its sports industry, and develop global sports festivals that engage participants from around the world.  

 

Mayor Park stated, “The WADA World Conference in Busan has brought together influential figures from across the global sports community. This has been a valuable opportunity to deepen dialogue on key sports agendas and strengthen our international partnerships. Busan will build on these relationships to advance as a genuine global sports hub city.”
