[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 세계반도핑기구(WADA)가 인공지능(AI)을 전면에 내세우며 새로운 반도핑 시대를 열겠다는 청사진을 공개했다.

 

3일 오전 부산 벡스코에서 열린 기자회견에서 위톨드 방카(Witold Bańka) 회장을 비롯한 주요 임원진은 예산 확대, 기술 고도화, 그리고 윤리 기준 강화라는 세 축을 중심으로 한 향후 전략을 발표했다.  

 

이 자리에는 라이언 피니(세계반도핑기구 선수위원장), 양양(부위원장), 올리비에 니글리(사무총장) 등 WADA 핵심 인사들이 참석했다. 이들은 WADA의 정책 방향과 함께 최근 전 세계적으로 논란을 불러온 ‘Enhanced Games’ 방식의 경기 운영에 대해 단호히 선을 그었다.

 

“AI는 반도핑의 새로운 심장”

방카 회장은 “AI는 향후 반도핑의 핵심 도구가 될 것”이라며 “데이터 분석을 정교화해 불공정 행위를 사전에 탐지하고, 검사 효율성을 최적화하겠다”고 말했다.  

 

WADA는 이미 분석 알고리즘을 도입해 의심 샘플의 이상 신호를 조기 포착하는 실험적 프로그램을 시행 중이며, 향후 모든 국제 경기의 검사 과정에 AI 기반 분석을 확대할 계획이다.  

 

라이언 피니 선수위원장은 “이번 개정 규약에는 선수들의 목소리가 전례 없이 폭넓게 반영됐다”며 “600여 건의 의견을 검토하는 과정은 쉽지 않았지만, 제도의 실효성을 확보하는 전환점이 됐다”고 밝혔다. 피니 위원장은 또한 AI 도입이 선수 인권과 투명성을 해치지 않도록 관리 기준을 엄격히 마련하겠다고 강조했다.

 

“금지약물 전제 대회는 용납 불가”

방카 회장은 ‘Enhanced Games’로 상징되는 새로운 형태의 ‘강화 경기’에 대해 “금지약물 복용을 전제로 한 대회는 매우 위험하고 용납할 수 없다”며 WADA의 입장을 명확히 했다. 선수위원회 역시 “공정 경쟁의 가치가 훼손될 수 있다”고 우려를 표하며, 이에 참여한 일부 선수들에 대한 실망감도 드러냈다.  

 

이는 단순한 규제 차원을 넘어, WADA가 ‘윤리적 스포츠 생태계’라는 근본 철학을 수호하겠다는 의지를 보여주는 신호로 풀이된다. AI 기술이 반도핑 수단으로 강화되는 동시에, 금지약물 사용을 공공연히 허용하는 움직임에 대한 국제사회의 대응이 더욱 날카로워질 전망이다.

2027년 새 규약, 공정성의 재정의

니글리 사무총장은 “새로운 반도핑 규약은 2027년부터 시행될 예정이며, 그 전까지는 현행 체계가 유지된다”고 밝혔다. 또한 2026년 월드컵과 올림픽을 앞두고 각국 기관과의 협력을 강화하고 있다고 덧붙였다.  

 

이번 규약 개정에서는 인권 조항의 명문화와 선수 의견 반영이 주요 변화로 꼽힌다. 이는 단순한 시스템 개선을 넘어, 기술 발전과 인간 존엄성 사이의 균형을 중시하는 WADA의 방향성을 반영한다.

 

“한국의 반도핑 시스템, 세계적 수준”

방카 회장은 기자회견 말미에 한국도핑방지위원회(KADA)의 20주년을 축하하며 “한국의 반도핑 시스템은 글로벌 기준에서도 매우 우수하다”고 평가했다. 특히 서울올림픽파크텔 내 체험형 도핑방지 문화공간(FPG)을 “혁신적이고 모범적인 교육 플랫폼”으로 소개했다.  

 

양양 부위원장은 “선수는 기술만큼이나 가치와 책임을 배워야 한다”며 “AI 시대에도 공정한 경쟁의 의미가 흔들리지 않도록 해야 한다”고 덧붙였다.

 

AI와 인권, 기술과 윤리의 경계를 동시에 다루는 이번 WADA의 행보는, 단순히 ‘약물 근절’을 넘어 스포츠 가치의 재정의를 예고하고 있다. 부산에서 열린 이 회견은 그 첫 장을 연 셈이었다.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) unveiled an ambitious plan to enter a new era of anti-doping powered by artificial intelligence, emphasizing transparency and fairness as the foundation of its strategy. At a press conference held in Busan on December 3, WADA President Witold Bańka and key executives outlined future measures to expand digital capabilities and strengthen organizational capacity.

 

Among those present were Athlete Council Chair Ryan Pini, Vice President Yang Yang, and Director General Olivier Niggli. They collectively underscored WADA’s firm stance against drug-enabled competitions such as the so-called “Enhanced Games,” while pledging broader athlete engagement and stronger protection of human rights in upcoming reforms.

 

“AI Will Be the Core of Future Anti-Doping”

“Artificial intelligence will become a central tool for the future of anti-doping,” said Bańka. “By refining data analysis, we will enhance detection systems and make the fight against doping more efficient.” He added that the agency’s budget has almost doubled this year, ensuring stable financial footing to support new initiatives through greater involvement of sports organizations and sponsors.  

 

Pini, the Athlete Council Chair, said the ongoing review and revision of the anti-doping code reflected extensive athlete input. “Over six hundred athlete comments were considered. It was not easy, but it strengthened the effectiveness of the new system,” he said, emphasizing that AI use must uphold transparency and respect for athletes’ rights.

 

‘Enhanced Games’ Cross WADA’s Red Line

Bańka took a clear position against the concept of Enhanced Games, which promote performance enhancement through drug use. “Any competition that encourages the use of banned substances is extremely dangerous and unacceptable,” he stated. “It stands in direct opposition to WADA’s philosophy.”  

 

The Athlete Council also voiced disappointment toward athletes participating in such events and called for stronger education and institutional responses to safeguard fair competition.

 

New Code Set for 2027

Director General Olivier Niggli announced that a newly revised code will take effect in 2027, with the current code to remain in place until then. Preparations are underway to ensure readiness ahead of major global events such as the 2026 World Cup and the Olympics.  

 

According to Niggli, the upcoming code prioritizes fairness, accountability, and human rights — integrating both technological innovation and ethical oversight into anti-doping policy at a global scale.

 

Recognizing Korea’s Contribution

At the close of the session, Bańka commended the Korea Anti-Doping Agency (KADA) on its 20th anniversary, calling the nation’s anti-doping system “among the best in the world.” He particularly praised the experiential anti-doping cultural center at Seoul Olympic Parktel as “an innovative and exemplary educational platform.”  

 

Yang Yang, WADA’s vice president and International Olympic Committee member, added, “Athletes must continue to learn and grow, never forgetting the values of teamwork and integrity.”

 

WADA’s latest move, addressing both AI and human rights as well as the boundary between technology and ethics, signals a redefinition of the values of sports that goes beyond mere ‘eradication of doping.’ The conference held in Busan marked the beginning of that shift.
