이재명 대통령이 5일 중국 베이징 인민대회당에서 시진핑 중국 국가주석과 정상회담을 갖고 “한중관계의 전면 복원과 새 국면 진입”을 선언했다. 두 정상은 경제·문화·안보 등 주요 현안을 논의하며 균형 있고 미래지향적인 한중 협력 의지를 재확인했다.  

 

이번 회담은 2019년 이후 5년 만에 이뤄진 한국 대통령의 중국 방문으로, 양국 관계 복원을 상징하는 중요한 외교적 전환점으로 평가된다.  

 

“양국은 친구이자 이웃… 상호 신뢰와 협력 확대해야”  

신화통신 등 외신에 따르면, 시진핑 주석은 “중국과 한국은 오랜 역사를 함께해온 친구이자 이웃으로, 긴밀한 소통과 교류를 확대해야 한다”고 강조했다. 그는 “양국이 사회체제의 차이를 넘어 평화와 조화를 중시하며 상호 성공과 공동 발전을 이뤄왔다”며 “이 훌륭한 전통을 잇고 상호 신뢰를 강화해야 한다”고 말했다.  

 

시 주석은 또한 “중국은 한국과 함께 우호 협력의 방향을 확고히 지키고, 상생 원칙을 바탕으로 건강한 전략적 동반자 관계를 촉진하길 원한다”며 “양국이 인공지능·녹색산업·고령사회 대응 등 신흥 분야 협력을 강화해야 한다”고 밝혔다.  

 

그는 “중한 양국은 산업과 공급망이 깊이 연결된 중요한 파트너”라며 “공동 이익의 ‘파이’를 확장하고 청년·미디어·스포츠·지방정부 등 다양한 분야의 인적 교류를 늘려야 한다”고 제안했다.

이 대통령은 “이번 방문은 한중관계의 전면 복원을 위한 중대한 기회”라며 “양국이 함께 미래지향적 협력 구조를 구축하길 희망한다”고 말했다. 그는 “한국은 중국과의 오랜 우호 관계를 중요하게 여기며, 상호 존중과 공동 번영의 원칙 아래 협력의 문을 넓혀가고자 한다”고 강조했다.  

 

이 대통령은 경제협력 활성화와 함께 한류 콘텐츠 교류 재개도 제안했다. 양국 정상은 과학기술, 생태환경, 교통, 무역 등 15건의 협력 문서 서명을 지켜봤으며, 문화·콘텐츠 분야 교류 확대에도 공감대를 형성했다.  

 

한국 측은 또한 중국의 15차 5개년 계획(2026~2030년)에 따른 협력 기회를 적극 활용하고, 공급망 안정화·녹색전환 등 신산업 분야에서 실질 성과를 내겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.  

 

“역사의 올바른 편에 서야”… 한반도·동북아 정세도 논의  

시진핑 주석은 “중국과 한국은 일본 군국주의에 맞서 함께 승리한 역사를 공유하고 있다”며 “양국은 제2차 세계대전의 승리 성과를 지키고 동북아의 평화와 안정을 수호해야 한다”고 말했다.  

 

양국은 또한 북한의 최근 미사일 발사와 한반도 정세에 대해서도 의견을 교환했다. 이 대통령은 “한반도 평화를 위한 실질적 대안을 만들기 위해 중국과 긴밀히 협력할 것”이라며 “북한 비핵화와 상호 안보 신뢰 구축이 필요하다”고 언급했다.  

 

시 주석은 “중국과 한국이 함께 지역 평화를 지킬 중요한 책임을 지고 있다”며 “두 나라가 진정한 다자주의를 실천해 보호무역주의에 대응하고, 공정하고 포용적인 세계 경제 발전에 기여해야 한다”고 덧붙였다.

다양한 교류·비공식 일정  

이 대통령은 이날 회담 후 인민대회당에서 시 주석 부부의 환영을 받았으며, 부인 김희경 여사와 함께 펑리위안 여사와 인사를 나눴다. 이후 두 정상은 지난해 시 주석이 선물한 샤오미 스마트폰으로 함께 셀피를 촬영했고, 이 대통령은 “화질이 매우 좋지 않습니까?”라는 글과 함께 SNS에 사진을 올려 화제를 모았다.  

 

이 대통령은 오는 7일까지 중국에 머물며 상하이 임시정부 유적지 참배와 한중 비즈니스 포럼 참석 등 일정이 예정돼 있다. 그는 “이번 방중이 양국 관계의 빈틈을 메우고, 관계를 정상화해 더 높은 단계로 발전시키는 새로운 출발점이 되길 기대한다”고 말했다.

President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea (ROK) held a summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Monday, reaffirming their shared commitment to fully restore and advance Korea-China relations. It marked the first visit by a South Korean president to China since 2019.  

 

President Lee described the visit as “a crucial opportunity for the full-scale restoration of bilateral relations,” and expressed his hope to “open a new phase in the development of future-oriented Korea-China cooperation.”  

 

During the summit, the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and regional security. They witnessed the signing of 15 cooperation documents covering science and technology, environment, transportation, and trade. Both sides also shared the view that people-to-people exchanges should be strengthened across sectors such as youth, media, sports, and local governments.  

 

President Xi underscored that “China and Korea are friends and neighbors who share a long history,” stressing that both nations “have upheld harmony and peace beyond differences in social systems, achieving mutual success and common development.” He called on both countries to “enhance mutual trust, respect each other’s development paths, and properly manage differences through dialogue and consultation.”  

 

Xi added that Korea and China enjoy deep economic interdependence and close industrial and supply chain ties. He proposed that the two nations align their development strategies more closely and expand cooperation in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence, green industries, and the silver economy.  

 

On the political front, President Xi emphasized that both Korea and China “should stand firmly on the right side of history,” noting that “the two peoples made great sacrifices and fought together against Japanese militarism.” He said the two countries should “jointly safeguard the fruits of victory from World War II and maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia.”  

 

President Lee reaffirmed Korea’s commitment to mutual respect, coexistence, and the promotion of shared prosperity. He called for practical cooperation between the two sides, particularly in supply chain resilience, climate response, and new technology sectors. Korea also conveyed hopes for the gradual normalization of cultural exchanges, including in Korean music and drama, which had been limited in China for nearly a decade.  

 

On peace and security, the Korean president emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation for stability on the Korean Peninsula. “We will work closely with China to explore viable alternatives for peace and trust-building in the region,” he said.  

 

Following the official talks, President Xi and First Lady Peng Liyuan hosted a welcome ceremony for President Lee and First Lady Kim Hee-kyung. The two leaders also drew attention online by taking a selfie together with a Xiaomi smartphone, which had been presented to President Lee by President Xi last year.  

 

President Lee is on a four-day visit to China through January 7, which includes a stop in Shanghai for a memorial ceremony honoring Korean independence activists who fought against Japanese rule. He said he hopes the visit “will serve as a new starting point to fill the gaps in Korea-China relations, restore them to normal, and elevate them to a higher level.”
