[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시가 다가올 ‘북극항로 시대’를 선점하기 위한 국제 행보에 나섰다. 박형준 부산시장은 1월 5일부터 6일까지(현지시간) 미국 알래스카주 앵커리지와 놈(Nome)시를 방문해 북극항로 관련 항만 인프라를 점검하고, 향후 부산항과의 협력 방안을 논의했다.

 

북극항로, 글로벌 물류 지형의 새 축

지구 온난화로 인한 해빙 가속화와 홍해 사태 등으로 기존 해상 물류 항로의 불안정성이 커지면서, 아시아와 유럽을 가장 짧게 잇는 지름길인 ‘북극항로’가 세계 물류업계의 핵심 화두로 급부상하고 있다.  

 

특히 미국이 북극권 자원 개발과 안보 강화를 목표로 알래스카 지역에 심해항만 건설을 추진하면서, 알래스카의 전략적 가치가 크게 높아지고 있다. 부산시는 이러한 흐름에 발맞춰 북극항로 거점을 확보하고, 부산항의 물류 네트워크를 북극권까지 확장한다는 계획이다.

 

앵커리지 항만 시찰…“부산-알래스카 협력 구상”

박 시장은 1월 5일 돈 영 알래스카 항만(구 앵커리지항)을 방문해 항만 운영 현황과 물류 인프라를 직접 살폈다. 알래스카 물동량의 90%를 처리하는 이 항만은 북극항로 물류의 핵심 거점으로 평가된다. 시는 이번 방문을 계기로 부산항과 연계 가능한 구체적인 북극항로 물류 비즈니스 모델을 마련할 방침이다.

전략 요충지 놈(Nome) 시 방문…북극권 협력 논의

박 시장은 6일 북극 베링해협에 인접한 전략 거점인 놈시를 찾아 케니 휴즈 시장 및 항만관리위원회를 만나 협력방안을 논의했다.  

 

박 시장은 미 정부가 추진 중인 북극 심해 항만 건설 현장을 시찰하며, 부산의 신항만 개발 및 관리 경험을 공유했다. 양측은 향후 북극항로 운항선박의 선용품 공급, 수리 및 관리 거점 등 실질협력 방안을 모색하기로 했다.  

 

놈시 관계자들은 북극항로 확대에 따라 아시아와의 교류가 늘어날 것으로 기대하며, 경제·문화·수산·학술 분야까지 협력을 확장하고 싶다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

 

“부산, 북극항로 시대 최전선에 설 것”

박형준 시장은 이번 방문에 대해 “북극항로는 기존 수에즈 운하를 경유하는 남방항로보다 거리를 30% 이상 단축할 수 있는 ‘꿈의 항로’이자, 부산이 세계 최고 물류 허브로 도약할 기회의 통로”라고 강조했다.

이어 “이번 알래스카 방문을 계기로 부산과 알래스카 간 실질적 글로벌 협력 네트워크를 구축해, 북극항로 시대의 최전선에 부산이 서도록 하겠다”고 밝혔다.  

 

박 시장은 또한 “국내외 해운·물류 기업들과 협력해 북극항로 활성화에 대비함으로써 ‘글로벌 허브도시 부산’ 실현을 앞당기겠다”고 덧붙였다.

The Busan Metropolitan Government has embarked on an international campaign to lead the upcoming “Arctic Shipping Route Era.” Mayor Park Heong-joon visited Anchorage and Nome, Alaska, from January 5 to 6 (local time) to inspect port infrastructure and discuss future cooperation plans to connect Busan Port with Alaska’s emerging Arctic logistics network.

 

Arctic Route Emerging as a New Global Logistics Corridor  

As global warming accelerates the melting of Arctic sea ice and instability increases along established maritime routes such as the Red Sea, the Arctic shipping route—a shorter and faster passage connecting Asia and Europe—has become a focal issue in global logistics.  

With the United States stepping up efforts to strengthen Arctic security and develop resources, including plans to construct a deep-sea port in Alaska, the region’s strategic value has been rapidly rising. In response, Busan aims to proactively build partnerships to expand its logistics network northward into the Arctic region.

 

Anchorage Port Inspection: Seeking U.S.–Korea Port Cooperation  

On January 5, Mayor Park visited Don Young Port of Alaska (formerly the Port of Anchorage) to review port operations and logistics infrastructure.

 

Handling approximately 90 percent of Alaska’s total cargo volume, the port serves as a central logistics hub. The Busan delegation explored potential business models linking Busan Port with Anchorage to advance Arctic shipping route development.

 

Visit to Strategic City of Nome: Exploring Arctic Collaboration  

The following day, Mayor Park visited the city of Nome, a key gateway to the Arctic Ocean along the Bering Strait. During a meeting with Nome Mayor Kenny Hughes and port officials, Park discussed cooperative opportunities and toured the site of a recently announced U.S. federal deep-sea port project.  

 

Drawing on Busan’s extensive experience in new port construction and management, Mayor Park shared insights on creating mutual growth between the two port cities. The discussions focused on future collaboration in ship supplies, maintenance, and management services for vessels operating along the Arctic route.  

 

Nome officials expressed strong interest in strengthening exchanges with Asia, highlighting prospects for cooperation across economic, cultural, academic, and fisheries sectors.

 

 “Busan Will Stand at the Forefront of the Arctic Era”  

Mayor Park described the Arctic shipping route as “a dream corridor” that can shorten the shipping distance between Busan and Europe by more than 30 percent compared to the Suez Canal route. He emphasized that “the Arctic route represents a historic opportunity for Busan to become one of the world’s leading logistics hubs.”  

 

He added, “Based on this visit, we plan to build a solid global cooperation network between Alaska and Busan, ensuring that our city stands at the forefront of the Arctic shipping route era.”  

 

Mayor Park also noted that Busan will collaborate with domestic and international shipping and logistics companies to accelerate preparations for the Arctic route, further advancing the vision of a ‘Global Hub City, Busan.’
