A burnt child dreads the fire... "Criticism is emerging that this is a Lee Jae-myung dictatorship..." - Moon Il-suk, Publisher of this newspaper
The Republic of Korea was a nation that experienced civilian dictatorship and military dictatorship for a long period. Syngman Rhee was a civilian dictator during his long tenure. Park Chung-hee was a dictatorship based on a military coup. Chun Doo-hwan was a military dictatorship based on a military coup. People shuddered with rage. While many citizens were directly sacrificed during these periods of dictatorship, the vast majority of the people had to live under the chains of dictatorship, trembling with rage. However, regrettably, voices of the sort claiming that the Lee Jae-myung administration has begun a low-level dictatorship have started to circulate both at home and abroad. Of course, this is a concern regarding a civilian dictatorship. Domestic criticism of President Lee Jae-myung’s unilateral rule has spread to foreign media, sparking international controversy, with some foreign outlets, such as the Canadian publication Western Standard, describing him as "Asia's newest dictator." Western Standard criticized President Lee by characterizing him as "Asia's newest dictator" through an article by political commentator William Barclay. Barclay argued that the Lee administration is threatening South Korea's democracy. Let us pay attention to the points raised by foreign media. First, it cited the suppression of opposition politicians and the detention of a former president as political retaliation. The media outlet pointed out that the Lee administration is suppressing political rivals, citing examples such as arresting and detaining a former president (Yoon Suk-youl) and confining him in a narrow solitary cell under inhumane conditions. It was criticized that the practice of mobilizing the judicial system to suppress opposition is a typical playbook used by dictators. Second, it pointed out the infringement of freedom of expression and the censorship of critical forces, as well as the censorship of the media and public opinion. It was argued that the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party of Korea have controlled criticism of the government and persistently attacked freedom of expression. "Bulletproof" legislation was also identified as an act of dictatorship. It was pointed out that various bills explicitly threatening freedom of expression were passed to suppress political dissent and protect ruling party candidates or high-ranking officials from criticism. Third, it was argued that fundamental rights were suppressed by restricting freedom of assembly and religion. The grounds for this dictatorship cited the infringement of citizens' basic human rights, such as the exclusion of religious freedom and political assembly freedom across a wide range of regions in Korea. Amidst this, criticism of President Lee Jae-myung by Lee Seok-yon, Chairman of the National Unity Committee, emerged. Lee Seok-yon, Chairman of the National Unity Committee, strongly criticized President Lee Jae-myung and the administration's independent decision-making style, calling it a "trap of groupthink" and a "half-hearted integration." This message was conveyed directly through a meeting presided over by the President amidst the conflict sparked last May by allegations of "abuse of power" by a Blue House administrative official. Lee Seok-yon, Chairman of the National Unity Committee, pointed out that if the administration remains confined solely within its governing philosophy, it will inevitably result in "half-hearted integration" rather than true unity. He emphasized that policy decisions made without opposing debate or the expression of dissenting opinions will eventually lead to grave historical consequences, and that the administration must not fall into the "trap of groupthink." He warned that if a disconnect arises between the public's perspective and the administration's, it could lead to an irreversible situation. He demanded that President Lee Jae-myung demonstrate his conduct as the "President of the entire nation" after the June 3 local elections, without bias, as promised in his inaugural address. Following this criticism, discomfort was exposed. It is said that there was rudeness from the administration. Lee Seok-yon, Chairman of the National Unity Committee, confessed that he had never encountered such rudeness in his more than 40 years of public service. He directly criticized it, calling it "an abuse of power and excessive intervention intended to tame the committee for the sake of a report that serves to protect the President's mood." After silently listening to Chairman Lee's frank advice, President Lee Jae-myung indirectly expressed his displeasure through an official statement, saying, "Criticism and advice are free, but please bear in mind that 'organizational principles' apply as a member of a state body." As this controversy came to light, Cho Yong-sul, spokesperson for the People Power Party's Central Election Campaign Committee, wrote on May 21, "The President's 'Abuse of Power' National Unity Committee: Was a 'Silence-Free Committee' Ultimately What Was Needed?" The commentary begins by stating, “Lee Seok-yeon, Chairman of the National Unity Committee, was a symbolic figure whom President Lee Jae-myung personally elevated to the level of a Deputy Prime Minister, calling it a ‘Lee Jae-myung-style appointment for national unity.’ At the same time, he urged him to ‘provide sufficient support’ and ‘play a very significant role.’ However, the reality was different. It has been revealed that the Presidential Office engaged in ‘disciplining’ Chairman Lee, who offered critical remarks, through indiscriminate abuse of power.” The commentary continues, “Regarding this controversy, Chairman Lee Seok-yeon remarked, ‘In my 40 years of public service, I have never encountered such rudeness.’ It is reported that although he conveyed reports concerning the operation of the National Unity Committee, a Presidential Office administrative official engaged in unreasonable abuse of power, even issuing a ‘stern warning’ claiming the report was not what they wanted. The National Unity Committee is an organization established to unite the people, true to its name. It is a body intended to offer advice on one-way state administration and to embrace dissenting voices. It is not a ‘screen organization’ that must keep its mouth shut for the President’s showmanship politics. Moreover, a frontline administrative official [regarding] the President "It is certainly not an organization that controls and tames the committee to produce reports for the sake of protecting its sentiments," he pointed out. He continued, "As the Chairman of the National Unity Committee, Chairman Lee Seok-yeon has repeatedly voiced bitter criticism regarding the Lee Jae-myung administration's anti-unity actions in public. Notably, he criticized the legislation of the 'crime of distorting the law,' which many legal experts had expressed concern about, calling it a 'disgrace to a civilized nation.' Isn't that something a Chairman of the National Unity Committee is fully entitled to say? Ultimately, one cannot help but ask whether the National Unity Committee must be a 'Committee for Silencing the People' for President Lee Jae-myung. President Lee has repeatedly stated that he would appoint conservative figures to key positions to listen to criticism whenever he had the chance. However, seeing him turn a blind eye and unable to tolerate even a single word of criticism, it appears that he ultimately wanted 'public silence,' not national unity." In the 21st century, an era of enlightened civilization, the very word 'dictatorship' is backward. President Lee Jae-myung must remember the fates of some of Korea's past dictators. Syngman Rhee was humiliatingly exiled abroad. Park Chung-hee was executed on the spot. Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo served time in detention and imprisonment. There is a Korean proverb that says, "A person startled by a turtle is startled by a pot lid." This foreshadows parliamentary dictatorship in the current Republic of Korea. This is a hypothetical scenario. It is based on the premise of "what if." I point out that if President Lee Jae-myung were to implement the dictatorship feared by intellectuals at home and abroad, he would inevitably be following the path of Syngman Rhee, Park Chung-hee, Chun Doo-hwan, and Roh Tae-woo. I hope that in the future, President Lee Jae-myung will be remembered as "a competent ruler of Korea's liberal democracy." moonilsuk@naver.com
