[Here is the English version of the artice] Police Launch Fraud Investigation into Busan Hotels for "Canceling Reservations to Gouge Prices" Ahead of BTS Concert
The Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Detachment of the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency announced on June 2 that it has launched a fraud investigation into lodging establishments in Busan suspected of unilaterally canceling existing reservations and reselling the rooms at exorbitant prices ahead of the upcoming BTS World Tour concert in the city.
The controversy ignited following reports that certain hotels and motels canceled existing bookings under the pretext of "overbooking" immediately after the concert announcement. These establishments then put the rooms back on the market at drastically hiked prices, in some cases skyrocketing from 100,000 KRW to 1.5 million KRW, sparking fierce backlash from fans on social media.
Police determined that such practices go beyond mere consumer inconvenience, severely damaging Busan’s tourism image and undermining South Korea’s international credibility. Following a thorough legal review, the authorities concluded that these actions could constitute fraud and initiated a formal investigation.
According to the Tourist Complaint Center of the Korea Tourism Organization, approximately 80% of all complaints filed between January and May this year involved foreign visitors. Given the language barriers, short-term stays, and limited understanding of local laws, the actual number of unreported damages among foreign tourists is estimated to be much higher.
A official from the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "We will conduct a rigorous investigation and take strict action if criminal charges are proven. Believing there may be additional similar cases, we plan to expand the scope of our investigation."
