[Here is the English version of the artice] Ahn Urges Pres. Lee to Set Up FX Task Force as Won Weakens to 1,560

*( FX: Foreign Exchange)

Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo issued a sharp rebuke of President Lee Jae-myung’s economic policies, demanding the immediate establishment of a presidential task force on foreign exchange as the South Korean won plummeted past the critical psychological barrier of 1,560 won per U.S. dollar.

The currency's depreciation, marking its lowest level in 16 years since the 2009 global financial crisis, coupled with a sharp plunge in the domestic stock market, has triggered widespread alarm over the nation's economic trajectory. Ahn defined the current situation as a "triple whammy" of a surging exchange rate, collapsing equity prices, and a massive flight of foreign capital, warning that the administration's silence risks sending a dangerous signal to global markets.

Ahn framed the exchange rate not merely as an isolated economic indicator, but as a comprehensive report card reflecting how global stakeholders view a nation’s future, including its fiscal health, growth potential, industrial policies, and diplomacy. The weakening of the won, he argued, is a direct manifestation of growing global distrust in the current administration’s economic stewardship.

According to Ahn’s analysis, the underlying causes of the currency crisis are structural and cumulative. He pointed to widening fiscal deficits, entrenched low growth, a regulatory environment hostile to corporate activity, and an uncertain international trade strategy as the core domestic vulnerabilities. The situation has been further exacerbated by escalating geopolitical risks in the Middle East, leading to an precipitous decline in the won's value. Ahn noted that a currency sell-off is an inevitable consequence when capital and corporations no longer find the domestic economic environment attractive enough to remain.

The lawmaker also expressed deep concern over the vulnerability of the equity market, following a rout in which the benchmark Kospi index plunged more than 5 percent in a single session. Ahn attributed the crash to South Korea’s fragile economic architecture, which remains excessively dependent on a few dominant semiconductor stocks. He criticized the administration’s focus on artificial index support through massive spending, warning that boosting stock figures without fundamental structural reform would ultimately inflict greater damage on the broader economy over the medium to long term.

Ahn took direct aim at President Lee’s perceived inaction during a period when foreign investors have pulled capital out of the domestic market for 20 consecutive days. He stressed that leadership must address the compounding crises of exchange rates, interest rates, inflation, and housing prices with precise and fundamental solutions.

To restore market confidence, Ahn called for a sophisticated policy mix of fiscal and monetary tools, alongside a tangible strengthening of the nation's foreign exchange safety net. He concluded by urging President Lee to immediately launch a dedicated foreign exchange task force within the presidential office to proactively manage the crisis and to swiftly overhaul the economic structure so that businesses and capital can safely reinvest in South Korea.
