[Here is the English version of the artice] Sri Lanka Tourism Targets Korean Market with Expanded Roadshows and 50th Anniversary Tourism Campaign
BUSAN, South Korea — Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) stepped up its efforts to attract Korean travelers by hosting the “Sri Lanka Tourism Roadshow – Busan” at Signiel Busan Hotel on June 10, showcasing the island nation’s rich cultural heritage, Buddhist attractions, natural landscapes, and diverse tourism experiences.
The event brought together more than 120 travel trade representatives from the Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam regions ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea in 2027. The roadshow served as a platform to strengthen tourism cooperation between the two countries while introducing Sri Lanka’s key tourism assets to the Korean travel industry.
The program featured an opening ceremony and traditional oil lamp lighting ritual, followed by welcome remarks from H.E. Marimuthu Karupaiya Pathmanathan, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Korea, presentations by Sanjaya Yanuartha Niroshana, Director General of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, congratulatory speeches from tourism industry leaders, remarks by Tanuja Muniura, Deputy Director for Korea, and a series of cultural performances and B2B networking sessions.
Addressing participants, Ambassador Pathmanathan emphasized that the roadshow would further strengthen cooperation between the tourism industries of both countries while introducing Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, nature, cuisine, and world-class tourism services to Korean travelers. He noted that growing interest in cultural heritage experiences among Korean travelers presents significant opportunities for bilateral tourism exchanges.
In her remarks, Tanuja Muniura highlighted the long-standing friendship between Korea and Sri Lanka, built on mutual respect, cultural understanding, and people-to-people exchanges. She expressed appreciation to Korean travel industry partners for their continued support in promoting Sri Lanka and underscored the importance of expanding tourism and cultural cooperation between the two nations.
Muniura described Sri Lanka as a multi-dimensional destination offering ancient heritage sites, pristine beaches, diverse wildlife, wellness tourism experiences, adventure activities, and renowned hospitality. She also pointed to the strong Buddhist connection between the two countries as a valuable foundation for future tourism and cultural exchanges.
Speaking during a media interview following his presentation, Sanjaya Yanuartha Niroshana, Director General of SLTPB, identified South Korea as one of Sri Lanka’s most important growth markets and outlined ambitious plans to expand tourism marketing activities throughout the country.
According to Niroshana, Sri Lanka successfully organized roadshows in both Seoul and Busan last year and selected the two cities because of their strategic importance within Korea’s tourism industry. Building on that success, the tourism board plans to expand future roadshows to additional major cities across the country.
The Korean market has shown encouraging growth in recent years. Approximately 12,000 Korean visitors traveled to Sri Lanka last year, prompting the tourism authority to set an ambitious target of attracting around 50,000 Korean visitors annually. To achieve this goal, SLTPB plans to increase its participation in travel fairs, expand roadshows, and launch a series of consumer-focused promotional campaigns.
Sri Lanka is also seeking to improve travel accessibility. The country introduced a visa-free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) program for citizens of 40 countries in May 2026. The initiative will be evaluated after a one-year trial period before decisions are made regarding its continuation.
Niroshana highlighted Sri Lanka’s diverse tourism offerings, particularly the world-famous Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Asia’s most significant Buddhist cultural festivals held annually in August. He noted that the country hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, while the Christmas holiday season remains one of the busiest travel periods.
Looking ahead to 2027, Sri Lanka Tourism plans to organize a variety of cultural and tourism promotion programs in Korea to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Rather than promoting a single iconic attraction, Niroshana emphasized Sri Lanka’s ability to offer a wide range of experiences within a relatively compact destination. Visitors can explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Sigiriya, ancient Buddhist temples, wildlife safaris, tropical beaches, scenic mountain regions, and wellness retreats within a short travel distance.
Air connectivity is gradually improving as well. Sri Lankan Airlines currently operates two weekly flights between Incheon and Colombo, while discussions are reportedly underway regarding the possible resumption of Korean Air’s pre-pandemic direct service. Travelers can also access Sri Lanka conveniently through regional hubs including Singapore, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.
Marketing efforts are increasingly focused on digital channels and public relations campaigns aimed at raising awareness among Korean consumers. The tourism board intends to strengthen its online presence and promote Sri Lanka’s unique tourism products through targeted digital marketing initiatives.
Niroshana cited safety, cleanliness, warm hospitality, and value for money as some of Sri Lanka’s strongest competitive advantages. The destination offers accommodation options ranging from luxury resorts and boutique hotels to homestays, catering to a broad spectrum of travelers. Its diverse culinary traditions and spice-based cuisine further enrich the visitor experience.
The country’s digital infrastructure has also improved significantly, with approximately 95 percent of the island covered by 4G and 5G mobile networks. Starlink services are available in certain areas, although connectivity may remain limited in some remote mountainous regions.
“Korea is a very important market for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry,” Niroshana said. “We will continue to strengthen our partnerships and promotional efforts so that more Korean travelers can experience Sri Lanka’s culture, nature, wellness offerings, Buddhist heritage, and culinary attractions firsthand.”
