[Here is the English version of the article] Busan City Steps Up Collaboration to Boost Local Venture Ecosystem

Busan City has officially begun working with the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and various financial and investment institutions to revitalize the local venture ecosystem. On the morning of July 3, the city attended the "Busan High-Tech Industry Venture Ecosystem Activation Meeting" hosted by the FSC at the Busan Eurasia Platform. The meeting served as a platform to listen to on-site feedback from local businesses and investment firms, and to discuss ways to boost venture investment and support the growth of innovative enterprises in connection with the National Growth Fund.

The meeting was attended by around 30 officials, including Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo, FSC Chairman Lee Eok-won, Korea Development Bank Chairman Park Sang-jin, Busan Bank CEO Kim Seong-ju, as well as representatives from local investment firms and promising startups. The event featured presentations on local fund management performances, suggestions for strengthening the high-tech industry ecosystem, discussions on challenges faced by startups, and a Q&A session.

During the session, BNK Venture Capital and Series Ventures—subsidiary fund managers of the "Busan Future Growth Venture Fund" established by the city—shared their fund performance and presented strategies to expand local investment in tandem with the National Growth Fund. Additionally, Korean Air’s Aerospace Division proposed measures to reinforce the local industrial ecosystem for fostering future industries such as aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Synpl, a smart shoe manufacturing platform operated by Kristen Company, also shared its growth journey and the fundraising challenges it has faced since its inception.

Capitalizing on this meeting, Busan City plans to accelerate the reinforcement of the local venture ecosystem's competitiveness and expand growth foundations centered around strategic sectors like the maritime industry. Building on the 1.5 trillion KRW venture fund previously established, the city aims to scale the fund up to 2 trillion KRW by 2030 to bolster the supply of venture capital for promising local firms. It also plans to shift beyond relying solely on government-backed fund-of-funds (Anchor Funds) by creating a public-private cooperative venture fund-of-funds, thereby decentralizing venture capital that is currently concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area. Furthermore, the city will build a Busan-style new industry ecosystem by combining the maritime, port, and logistics industries with AI technology, with a particular focus on nurturing maritime-specialized AI Transformation (AX) startups.

Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo expressed his gratitude to the FSC for visiting Busan to listen directly to local voices at the start of the 9th popular election administration. He added that a revitalized Busan begins with creating an environment where companies can start up, grow, and invest right here in the city, and pledged to strengthen cooperation with the central government and the financial sector to help local businesses leap forward.
