[Here is the English version of the article] Tanzania Tourist Board Hosts ‘Destination Roadshow’ in Busan... "Unforgettable Tanzania" The Tanzania Tourist Board and the Embassy of Tanzania in South Korea successfully hosted a tourism promotion and business networking event in Busan. On July 8, the Tanzania Tourist Board launched a major promotional campaign at the Lotte Hotel Busan, organizing the "Destination Tanzania Roadshow and Networking Event" aimed at the Korean market.
The event gathered around 120 participants, including representatives from 20 Tanzanian tourism companies and 85 tourism operators from the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions. Prominent attendees from both nations included Noel Emmanuel Kaganda, the Tanzanian Ambassador to South Korea; John P.M. Masuka, Economic Advisor; George Joel Mwagane, Senior Tourism Officer of the Tanzania Tourist Board; Hoza Nuhu Mbura, Tourism Officer; and Jang Soon-bok, Vice President of the Busan Tourism Association, alongside major tourism industry leaders and media representatives.
Through this roadshow, the Tanzanian delegation expressed a strong commitment to expanding the bilateral friendly relations—built across various sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and trade since establishing diplomatic ties in 1992—into tourism, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. In particular, following the recently held "Tanzania-Korea Trade and Investment Forum," this event is expected to serve as a catalyst for strengthening practical and meaningful bonds between the citizens of both countries.
In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Noel Emmanuel Kaganda highlighted the official slogan, "Unforgettable Tanzania," and emphasized that South Korea is a highly crucial emerging tourism market. He noted that the number of Korean tourists visiting Tanzania reached 9,470 last year, and stated that this roadshow aims to attract more Korean visitors, establish B2B partnerships, and expand investment in the tourism industry.
Expanding Beyond Economic Cooperation to People-to-People and Cultural Exchange Ambassador Kaganda evaluated that this roadshow, following the successful conclusion of the recent "Tanzania-Korea Trade and Investment Forum," would serve as a vital momentum to broaden the scope of cooperation between the two nations.
"Over the years, Tanzania and the Republic of Korea have closely cooperated in various sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, ICT, and agriculture," Ambassador Kaganda emphasized. "This roadshow is a testament to our joint efforts to expand this cooperation into tourism, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connectivity."
He referenced a shared belief that strong ties are built not merely through economic transactions but through meaningful exchanges between the people of both nations, expressing deep gratitude to the Korean government and the organizers for providing this valuable promotional opportunity.
Ambassador Kaganda went on to introduce Tanzania's breathtaking natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage, actively encouraging visits from Korean tourists.
"From witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti to standing atop the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro and relaxing on the pristine white sand beaches of Zanzibar, Tanzania offers world-class experiences unmatched anywhere else on Earth," he said, showcasing the country’s unique appeal.
He further explained that Tanzania is home to 21 national parks, 32 game reserves, the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, the ancient Kondoa Rock-Art Sites, and the Olduvai Gorge, known as the Cradle of Mankind. Highlighting the authentic cultural experiences available through diverse tribal communities, he added, "Tanzania is a peaceful, safe, and warm country that will welcome every visitor with genuine hospitality and provide memories to last a lifetime."
Emphasizing the Importance of the Korean Market and Urging Business Partnerships South Korea is becoming an increasingly important tourism market for Tanzania, which welcomed 9,470 Korean visitors last year. Ambassador Kaganda called on the Korean travel industry and investors to actively explore business opportunities through this roadshow.
"Tanzanian tourism is not just a travel experience; it is also a growing investment opportunity," Ambassador Kaganda said. "From ecotourism and luxury hospitality to infrastructure supporting MICE tourism, Tanzania offers attractive prospects for Korean investors seeking long-term partnerships."
Accordingly, he urged, "We hope Korean travel agencies will work closely with local Tanzanian operators to develop innovative travel packages tailored to the Korean market," while also inviting investors to explore the vast opportunities Tanzania has to offer.
Ambassador Kaganda concluded by saying, "Tanzania is not just a place to visit briefly, but a place where you can feel at home and experience true warmth," urging local and international guests and tourism professionals to actively utilize the event to build substantial and valuable partnerships.
Tanzania Tourist Board Selects Korea as the Hub for its 'Go East Strategy' During the presentation on Tanzania’s tourism resources, George Joel Mwagane, Senior Tourism Officer, expressed his delight, saying, "I am thrilled to stand before you today to introduce Tanzania, the world's premier safari destination. As a representative of the Tanzania Tourist Board, which has been named Africa's leading tourist board for three consecutive years, I am proud to present our country. Since today's event focuses on B2B cooperation and networking, I will provide a clear overview of our overall tourism sector."
Mwagane introduced the board, stating, "The Tanzania Tourist Board is a national agency dedicated to promoting Tanzania's tourist attractions worldwide and coordinating cooperation between the public and private sectors. We are focusing all our efforts on building strategic partnerships with travel agencies, airlines, media, and trade associations, as well as supporting the diversification of tourism products."
He emphasized, "Recently, we have significantly expanded our investment focus beyond traditional wildlife tourism into the MICE industry. Starting with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly this October, we are scheduled to host a series of mega-events, including the Miss World Final in 2027 and the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027."
He also outlined the diverse tourism circuits across Tanzania. "In addition to the famous Northern Circuit, home to the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the Ngorongoro Crater, we have coastal circuits including Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam," he added. "There is also the Western Circuit, where visitors can experience chimpanzee trekking in Gombe and Tanganyika, and the Southern Circuit, which the government is intensively developing. To disperse tourists concentrated in the northern region, the government is putting significant effort into developing the highly potential Southern Circuit, which offers immense opportunities for travelers just like the north."
An economic performance report using statistical data followed. Mwagane explained, "Tourism is the cornerstone of the Tanzanian economy, accounting for approximately 17% of the national GDP and generating over $3.9 billion in annual revenue. It is our largest source of foreign exchange earnings, surpassing gold exports, and supports more than 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs."
He shed light on the rapid growth of the Korean market. "The number of Korean visitors, which hovered around 2,000 annually prior to COVID-19, has recently surged to approximately 9,470, confirming the immense potential of the Korean market. Our presence here today is no coincidence; we have designated South Korea as a core market for our 'Go East Strategy' targeting the Asian market, and we are concentrating our marketing capabilities here." He also noted that flight accessibility has improved significantly with major global airlines such as Qatar Airways, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, and KLM operating flights, alongside convenient access via land and sea.
Furthermore, Mwagane proposed practical partnerships with the domestic travel industry. "We look forward to Korean travel agencies collaborating closely with local Tanzanian companies to develop and promote package tours customized for Korean travelers," he said. "This is not a one-off event; we plan to return to Korea every year to continue this roadshow."
He concluded, "To sell a product well, one must understand it well. Therefore, we promise to provide familiarization (Fam) trips and site inspections for Korean travel agency officials, media, bloggers, and influencers, allowing them to experience our iconic attractions firsthand. We urge you to actively discuss new business opportunities during the B2B business meetings of this roadshow and join us on this journey to position Tanzania as the ultimate travel destination for Koreans."
Following the presentations, a B2B business meeting session was held, where representative Tanzanian tourism operators, including safari tour companies, consulted with tourism representatives from the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions to explore new business opportunities.
In addition, George Joel Mwagane, Senior Tourism Officer, and Hoza Nuhu Mbura, Tourism Officer of the Tanzania Tourist Board, held a press conference following the presentation to discuss various topics. These included climate response measures, detailed guide services for travelers, tourist attraction goals, marketing diversification strategies, plans for direct flights, and the significance of the tourism slogan.
First, addressing the extreme heatwaves, such as the heat dome phenomenon, and the climate change currently affecting the world—including Europe and the United States—the Tanzanian government announced plans to provide detailed seasonal weather information and customized clothing guidelines in the email invitations sent to Korean guests.
The local climate in Tanzania can sometimes be highly unpredictable and change abruptly, with temperatures dropping significantly. To counter this, professionally certified local tour guides will remain on-site to offer flexible services tailored to the situation. For instance, during chilly weather, warm beverages will be kept inside the vehicles for passengers, whereas during high temperatures, iced drinks will be provided along with the opening of safari vehicle rooftops to ensure a comfortable and convenient journey.
Korean Visitor Statistics and Tourist Attraction Goals Last year, the number of Korean tourists visiting Tanzania was recorded at approximately 9,500. This represents rapid growth compared to the post-pandemic period, when numbers hovered around 2,000. Recognizing South Korea as the country with the highest potential in the Asian market, the Tanzanian government expects the number of Korean visitors to nearly double this year, reaching around 15,000.
In line with this growth, the Tanzanian government has set a national goal to expand the total number of global tourists from the current 5 million to 8 million by 2030. To attract an additional 3 million foreign tourists within the next five years, the government is conducting precise market analyses of key target countries, including South Korea, and plans to roll out diverse promotional campaigns, such as participating in travel fairs and hosting roadshows in Korea.
Marketing Diversification Strategies for the Korean Market Currently, Korean tourist visits to Tanzania depend heavily on passive channels, with 53% resulting from travel agency packages and 35% driven by word-of-mouth recommendations from friends or acquaintances. Acknowledging previous shortcomings where government-level brand marketing failed to capitalize on the massive wave of content generated by famous travel YouTubers visiting Tanzania, the government has decided to significantly reinforce its marketing diversification strategies.
To specifically target young consumers aged between their 20s and 40s, the board will actively utilize social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Moving beyond international travel fairs and roadshows in Korea, the Tanzania Tourist Board is planning familiarization (Fam) trips inviting Korean media professionals, prominent influencers, and YouTubers. This initiative aims to produce trendy promotional content and build strong partnerships to overcome previous marketing limitations.
Tanzania Tourist Board Invites Korean Media to Special Fam Trip Ahead of the Swahili International Tourism Expo (SITE), an international travel fair coming up this October, the Tanzania Tourist Board will invite Korean media professionals to the country for a massive promotional campaign. The board will host the 9th Swahili International Tourism Expo (SITE 2026) for three days from October 23 to 25 in Dar es Salaam. Separate from general travel agencies or influencer press teams, this program will operate on an independent schedule tailored specifically to the media's needs, focusing heavily on photography and video filming.
As SITE is a B2B-focused event where global tourism experts gather, a large-scale Fam trip targeting the Korean travel industry and media will take place during this period. After finishing three days of official business meetings, participants can choose their preferred regions—such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Kilimanjaro—to conduct customized, on-site coverage. Because the Korean media serves as a crucial bridge for delivering local information, the tourism board noted that rather than using the general registration process, they will accept special individual applications via email using collected business cards.
Meanwhile, regarding recent global concerns over heat dome phenomena, a tourism board official clarified that the Northern and Southern Circuits where safaris take place experience their coolest and most optimal weather from July to October. In fact, some high-altitude areas like Ngorongoro see temperatures drop low enough to require a coat, ensuring a comfortable environment for media coverage.
Plans for Incheon-Tanzania Direct Flights and Charter Flights The absence of direct flights connecting Incheon to major Tanzanian cities like Dar es Salaam or Dodoma remains a primary obstacle to activating tourism and exchange between the two nations. To establish and stably operate regular direct flights, an annual aviation demand of at least 100,000 passengers is required.
Consequently, the Tanzanian government and relevant institutions are pursuing a phased approach as a short-term alternative, prioritizing the introduction of charter flights during the peak travel season (High Season). This plan benchmarks the success stories of regions like Croatia, the Caucasus, and Egypt, which initially accumulated travel demand by operating charter flights 6 to 11 times a year during peak seasons before opening regular direct routes. To achieve this, close consultations are underway to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with major Korean airlines, aiming to gradually secure passenger demand through charter flight operations.
The Meaning Behind the Tanzanian Tourism Slogan Tanzania's official tourism slogan, "Unforgettable Tanzania," stems from the philosophy that the essence of tourism ultimately lies in the "experience." It reflects the Tanzanian government's determination to go beyond simply showing tourist destinations to visitors, aiming instead to leave a profound, lifelong impression.
This slogan is brought to life through the combination of Tanzania's pristine beaches, the vast wilderness teeming with wildlife, and the unique cultural experiences available only on the ground. Travelers who visit Tanzania once will have their memories deeply etched into their minds as lifelong "core memories." The slogan serves as a proud reflection of the country's unique ability to deliver such distinctive and diverse experiences.
