[Here is the English version of the article] Busan Story Market Unveils 25 Official Selections for 2026, Bringing Together Original IPs from Four Asian Countries

Busan Story Market (BSM), a flagship program of the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM), the official market of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), has announced its 25 official selections for 2026. The lineup features 15 Korean titles, four from Taiwan, four from Japan, and two from Indonesia, highlighting a diverse collection of Asian original intellectual properties (IPs) with strong potential for global screen adaptation and secondary rights transactions.

This year's selections span a broad creative spectrum, exploring universal themes such as life and death, family, personal growth, love, and loss through fresh genre-driven storytelling. The lineup also includes works built around secrets, obsession, and unexpected narrative twists, demonstrating the growing diversity and competitiveness of Asian source material.

Busan Story Market serves as a global marketplace connecting original IPs with the international film and audiovisual industry. The event introduces books, webtoons, web novels, games, and original stories with high adaptation potential to producers, distributors, and streaming platforms. Selected works participate in official pitching sessions and one-on-one business meetings to pursue screen adaptations, licensing opportunities, and international collaborations.

The Korean section received 138 submissions from 83 companies, with 15 works from 13 companies ultimately selected. The lineup includes nine books, two webtoons, two web novels, and two original stories. While books account for more than half of the selections, the final lineup represents a balanced mix of media formats and genres.

The Korean selections combine commercially proven genres such as romance, mystery, fantasy, and human drama with distinctive concepts including parallel worlds, out-of-body experiences, and science fiction elements. They also tackle diverse themes—including life and death, intergenerational communication, family and community, individuals and society, and coming-of-age journeys—through compelling characters and original storytelling. The selections range from emotionally resonant human dramas and AI-themed fantasy to fusion historical romance, period dramas, and genre-blending narratives, underscoring their strong adaptation potential.

The Taiwanese selections were curated in partnership with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA). Four works were selected, representing one book, one webtoon, one web novel, and one comic. Each title stands out with a distinctive high-concept premise that clearly communicates its identity in a single sentence.

Rather than using fantasy merely as a visual device, the Taiwanese works employ imaginative settings to explore universal emotions such as grief, guilt, first love, family affection, and personal growth. Their combination of inventive concepts and emotional depth positions them as strong candidates for film, television, and other forms of content adaptation.

The Japanese selections were chosen in partnership with the Visual Industry Promotion Organization (VIPO). Four titles were selected, including one book and three manga works.

A defining characteristic of this year's Japanese lineup is its multilayered storytelling centered on secrets and obsession. As characters uncover hidden truths or develop unexpected relationships across personal boundaries, shifting human dynamics drive the narratives forward. By tightly weaving revelations and evolving relationships together, these works deliver compelling character-driven stories with unpredictable plot developments.

The Indonesian selections consist of two comic titles discovered through the JAFF Content Market, a program of the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival Market (JAFF Market). Following pitching sessions and business meetings focused on film and audiovisual adaptation, both works were named winners of the "JAFF Content Market Award Goes to ACFM 2026" and earned official selection for Busan Story Market 2026.

This year, the former JAFF Content Market has been reorganized as JAFF IP Connection. Under the new partnership, one Korean IP from the Busan Story Market official selections will be chosen through meetings with JAFF organizers and invited to participate in JAFF IP Connection, which will take place in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from November 28 to 30. Following the participation of Indonesian IPs in Busan Story Market, the invitation of a Korean IP to JAFF IP Connection marks the beginning of a two-way exchange of original IPs between the two markets.

Busan Story Market 2026 will be held from October 10 to 13 at Exhibition Center II of BEXCO in Busan. During the event, the 25 official selections will participate in pitching sessions and one-on-one business meetings with domestic and international industry professionals to explore adaptation opportunities and secondary rights deals.

The Asian Contents & Film Market, the official industry market of the Busan International Film Festival, celebrated its 20th edition in 2025. The event attracted 1,222 companies and 3,024 industry professionals from 55 countries, while welcoming a record 30,006 visitors. A total of 8,438 business meetings were held during the Sales Market, generating transactions worth approximately US$71.16 million.
