[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 전 세계 기후과학자들이 글로벌 몬순 시스템의 변동성과 기후변화 영향을 논의하기 위해 부산에 모인다.

부산대학교 기초과학연구원(IBS) 기후물리 연구단(단장 악셀 팀머만)은 오는 10일부터 13일까지 나흘간 부산 파라다이스호텔에서 'IBS 글로벌 몬순 시스템 콘퍼런스(IBS Conference on Global Monsoon Systems)'를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

이번 콘퍼런스는 전 지구적 몬순 시스템의 변동성과 예측 가능성을 심층적으로 분석하고, 자연적·인위적 기후변화가 몬순에 미치는 영향을 규명하기 위해 마련된 국제학술행사다. 대기과학과 기후모델링, 수문학, 고기후학 등 다양한 분야의 세계적인 연구자들이 참석해 최신 연구 성과를 공유하고 향후 국제 공동연구 방향을 논의할 예정이다.

IBS 콘퍼런스는 기초과학 분야의 세계적 석학과 주요 연구자들이 참여하는 대표적인 국제학술회의로, 기초과학연구원은 국내외 연구자 간 교류를 확대하고 국제 공동연구 기반을 강화하기 위해 2013년부터 연구 분야별 국제 콘퍼런스를 지속적으로 개최해 오고 있다.

특히 올해는 부산대학교 IBS 기후물리 연구단이 출범한 지 10주년을 맞는 해로, 이번 행사 기간에는 연구단의 지난 10년간 연구 성과를 돌아보고 향후 발전 방향을 모색하는 10주년 기념 특별행사도 함께 열린다.

이번 콘퍼런스에서는 전 지구 및 지역 몬순의 형성과 변동 메커니즘, 장·단기 예측 가능성, 기후변화에 따른 몬순 시스템의 민감도 등을 주제로 다양한 발표와 토론이 이어질 예정이다. 참가자들은 자연적인 기후 변동과 인간 활동으로 인한 기후변화가 몬순에 미치는 영향을 다각도로 분석하고, 이를 통해 기후 예측 정확도를 높이기 위한 최신 연구 결과를 공유한다.

또한 이번 행사는 글로벌 몬순 연구 분야의 국제 협력 네트워크를 확대하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다. 각국 연구기관과 대학의 전문가들이 공동 연구 과제를 논의하고 새로운 협력 체계를 구축하는 등 기후과학 분야의 국제적 연계를 강화하는 장이 될 전망이다.

행사에서는 글로벌 몬순 연구의 권위자인 미국 하와이대학교 빈 왕(Bin Wang) 교수의 기조강연을 시작으로 몬순의 다중 규모 변동성과 태풍 활동, 해수면 온도 변화가 몬순 시스템에 미치는 영향 등 최근 주목받는 연구 주제를 중심으로 다양한 발표가 진행된다. 기후모델을 활용한 미래 몬순 변화 전망과 극한기상 현상 예측에 관한 연구 결과도 함께 소개될 예정이다.

악셀 팀머만 부산대학교 IBS 기후물리 연구단장은 "이번 콘퍼런스는 글로벌 몬순 시스템에 대한 주요 연구 성과와 최신 아이디어를 공유하는 의미 있는 국제 교류의 장이 될 것"이라며 "세계 기후과학자들과의 협력을 더욱 강화하고 글로벌 기후 연구를 활성화하는 중요한 계기가 되기를 기대한다"고 말했다.

=Four-day IBS conference to explore monsoon variability, climate change, and future research collaboration

Leading climate scientists from around the world will gather in Busan, South Korea, next week to examine the dynamics of global monsoon systems and their response to climate change at a major international scientific conference hosted by the Institute for Basic Science (IBS).

The 'IBS Conference on Global Monsoon Systems', organized by the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICP) at Pusan National University, will take place from August 10 to 13 at Paradise Hotel Busan. The four-day event will bring together internationally recognized experts in atmospheric science, climate modeling, hydrology, paleoclimatology, and related disciplines to discuss the latest advances in monsoon research and climate prediction.

The conference is one of IBS's flagship international scientific meetings, providing a platform for leading researchers to exchange cutting-edge findings and strengthen global collaboration in basic science. Since 2013, IBS has hosted a series of international conferences across a range of scientific disciplines to promote research cooperation between Korean and overseas scientists.

This year's conference carries additional significance as it coincides with the 10th anniversary of the IBS Center for Climate Physics at Pusan National University. A special event commemorating the center's decade of research achievements and international contributions will be held during the conference.

The scientific program will focus on understanding the variability and predictability of both regional and global monsoon systems, as well as the sensitivity of monsoons to natural climate variability and human-induced climate change. Researchers will present new findings aimed at improving scientific understanding of one of Earth's most influential climate systems while identifying opportunities for future international research partnerships.

The conference will open with a keynote lecture by 'Bin Wang', Professor at the University of Hawaiʻi and one of the world's foremost authorities on monsoon dynamics. Presentations throughout the meeting will cover a broad range of topics, including multiscale monsoon variability, interactions between tropical cyclones and monsoon systems, the influence of sea surface temperature changes, advances in climate modeling, and future projections of monsoon behavior under a warming climate.

Scientists will also discuss emerging approaches to improving seasonal and long-term climate forecasts, as well as the growing risks posed by extreme weather events associated with changing monsoon patterns.

According to the organizers, the conference is expected to serve as an important forum for expanding international scientific cooperation and fostering new collaborative research initiatives addressing some of the most pressing challenges in climate science.

"This conference will provide a valuable international forum for sharing major research achievements and innovative ideas on global monsoon systems," said 'Axel Timmermann', Director of the IBS Center for Climate Physics at Pusan National University. "We hope it will further strengthen collaboration among climate scientists worldwide and contribute to advancing global climate research."
