[Here is the English version of the article] Political tension over a proposed merger of South Korea’s service academies has escalated after President Lee Jae-myung cited past military coups as a rationale for the move, prompting opposition lawmakers to accuse the administration of framing national security around a political agenda.

Lawmakers from the conservative People Power Party on the National Assembly’s Defense Committee, led by Representative Lim Jong-deuk, held a news conference demanding that President Lee personally clarify the strategic necessity of the reform and subject the plan to objective verification.

At the heart of the dispute is a sharp disconnect between the administration's official pitch and the president’s own remarks. The government had long framed the consolidation of the military academies as a modernization effort designed to prepare officer candidates for future warfare, foster joint operations across the armed services, and boost educational efficiency.

However, opposition figures argue that President Lee exposed his true political motives during a Defense Ministry briefing when he explicitly invoked historical military coups as a key reason to restructure officer education.

Opposition lawmakers emphasized that officer training serves as a century-long foundation for national defense and combat readiness, requiring strict strategic alignment and broad public consensus. They pointed to a survey by the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses showing that 91.3 percent of active cadets oppose the merger, alongside growing pushback from veteran groups, cadets, and parents, as evidence that the plan lacks necessary support within the military itself.

Representative Lim argued that while past military coups breached the constitutional order, those responsible have already faced legal and historical accountability, making the events an invalid pretext for restructuring future officer training.

He highlighted the sacrifices of more than 1,600 Korea Military Academy graduates who died in action or in the line of duty, stressing that the dedication of the vast majority of officers serving today must not be undermined by past misdeeds.

The committee members also asserted that institutional neutrality in the armed forces cannot be achieved through a mere physical merger of academies. They called on politicians to stop utilizing national security for partisan gain and instead establish structural safeguards through legislative deliberation.

Furthermore, they warned that statements from the commander-in-chief carry weight that directly influences military morale, the honor of service members, and public confidence in defense policy.

The opposition lawmakers called on President Lee to publicly outline the military necessity and anticipated combat benefits if the merger is truly a defense reform, or to transparently address his historical views on the military academy if that is the underlying driver of the policy. Emphasizing that political administrations last only five years while the armed forces endure alongside the nation, the opposition vowed to thoroughly scrutinize and block any unilateral attempt to push the integration forward without public consensus.
