[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시가 2028년 6월 개최 예정인 '제4차 유엔해양총회(UNOC4)'의 국내 개최도시로 최종 지정됐다.

부산시는 제주와의 유치 경쟁 끝에 어제(10일) 국립수산물품질관리원 서울지원에서 열린 평가를 거쳐 제4차 유엔해양총회 본회의 개최도시로 최종 확정됐다고 발표했다. 유엔해양총회는 유엔 지속가능발전목표(SDGs) 중 14번째인 '해양생태계의 보전과 지속가능한 이용'을 실행하기 위해 3년마다 열리는 최고위급 국제 회의다.

대한민국과 칠레가 공동 개최하는 이번 총회는 2030년 SDGs 목표 달성을 2년 앞둔 시점에 열려 기후변화와 해양오염 대응 방안을 종합 점검하고 향후 국제 협력 방향을 설정하는 핵심 무대가 될 전망이다. 이번 행사에는 193개 유엔 회원국 대표단을 포함해 세계 각국의 정부, 국제기구, 학계, 산업계 관계자 등 약 2만 명이 참석할 예정이다.

부산시는 항만·해운·조선·수산 인프라와 해양과학기술 역량을 충실히 갖춘 대한민국 대표 해양도시라는 점을 강점으로 내세웠다. 아울러 지난해 제10차 아워 오션 콘퍼런스(OOC10)의 성공적 개최 경험과 동아시아해역 환경관리협력기구(PEMSEA) 등 글로벌 협력 네트워크, APEC 및 한·아세안 특별정상회의를 이끈 마이스(MICE) 인프라가 높은 평가를 받았다.

부산시는 이번 총회를 계기로 국내 우수 해양 정책 사례를 전 세계와 공유하고, 해양수산부의 부산 이전 추진과 연계해 글로벌 해양 협력 거점으로서의 입지를 다질 방침이다. 특히 2028년 함께 추진되는 '세계디자인수도(WDC)' 행사와 연계해 도시 브랜드 가치를 끌어올리고 지역 관광·디자인·해양 산업 전반에 실질적인 성과를 내겠다는 계획이다.

전재수 부산시장은 부산의 개최도시 선정이 대표 해양도시로서의 역량을 세계적으로 인정받은 결과라며 중앙정부와 긴밀히 협력해 성공적인 총회를 준비하겠다고 밝혔다. 아울러 세계 해양도시와 기업, 연구기관이 부산에 모여 지속가능한 미래를 모색하고 이러한 성과가 지역 산업 발전으로 연결되도록 최선을 다하겠다고 덧붙였다.

Busan has been officially designated as the host city for the 4th UN Ocean Conference (UNOC4), scheduled to take place in June 2028.

The Busan Metropolitan Government announced that it was officially confirmed as the host city for the UNOC4 plenary sessions following an evaluation at the National Fishery Products Quality Management Service's Seoul branch, competing against Jeju.

The UN Ocean Conference is a high-level international gathering held every three years to support the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, "Life Below Water." Co-hosted by South Korea and Chile, this fourth edition takes place two years ahead of the 2030 SDG deadline, serving as a pivotal platform to review global progress on climate change, marine pollution, and ecosystem preservation while establishing the future agenda for ocean sustainability.

Approximately 20,000 participants—including delegations from 193 UN member states, governments, international organizations, academia, and industry leaders—are expected to attend.

Busan presented strong advantages as South Korea's flagship maritime hub, possessing robust infrastructure across shipping, ports, shipbuilding, and fisheries alongside world-class capabilities in marine science and education.

The city's successful hosting of the 10th Our Ocean Conference (OOC10) last year, its ongoing collaboration with global networks such as the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), and its track record of hosting major summits like APEC and the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit were key factors in securing the bid. Busan plans to leverage this opportunity to share South Korea's ocean policies with the global community and reinforce its status as a central hub for international ocean cooperation, especially in connection with the planned relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to the city.

Furthermore, Busan aims to pair the event with the 2028 World Design Capital (WDC) title to enhance its global city brand and generate tangible economic impacts across the regional MICE, tourism, design, and maritime sectors.

Busan Mayor Jae-soo Jeon stated that the selection highlights international recognition of Busan's capabilities as a leading maritime city and committed to working closely with the central government to ensure a successful conference. He added that the city will do its utmost to bring together global maritime cities, international organizations, enterprises, and research institutions to shape a sustainable future for the oceans, translating those achievements into the growth of local industries.
