[Here is the English version of the article] Busan City Discusses Enhancing Friendly Cooperation and Exchanges with the Consul General of the Philippines in Busan

Busan City announced that Mayor Jeon Jae-soo met with Leah Victoria T. Carada, the inaugural Consul General of the Philippines in Busan, at the International Reception Room of City Hall at 3:30 PM on the 20th to discuss ways to expand friendly cooperation and exchanges between Busan and the Philippines.

This meeting was arranged to share concrete achievements following the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership and to strengthen practical cooperation, as Consul General Carada, who assumed office last March, is currently proceeding with the establishment of the Consulate General in Busan (with a temporary office located in Choryang-dong, Dong-gu).

Mayor Jeon expressed his gratitude, emphasizing that the Philippines is a deep-rooted partner as the first ASEAN nation to establish diplomatic ties with South Korea and the first Asian country to dispatch troops during the Korean War. In particular, he noted the significance of Cebu Province, which established a sister-city agreement with Busan in 2011 as the Philippines' second-largest administrative region and Southeast Asia's top tourism hub, evaluating that they have maintained active exchanges based on commonalities in marine affairs and tourism. He added that given this year marks the 15th anniversary of the Busan-Cebu sister-city relationship, he hopes the opening of the Philippine Consulate General in Busan will serve as a catalyst to expand cooperation beyond Cebu to the entire Philippines.

Furthermore, Mayor Jeon anticipated that the establishment of the consulate will provide substantial support to the approximately 2,400 Filipino residents, international students, businesspeople, and tourists in Busan. Pointing out that the Philippines ranked fourth in tourist arrivals among the 2.42 million foreign visitors to Busan in the first half of this year, he highlighted the high potential for cooperation between Busan—a world-class maritime city—and the Philippines in areas such as smart port development and eco-friendly maritime industries. He also requested that a high-level official from the Philippine government participate in the 4th UN Ocean Conference scheduled to be held in Busan in June 2028.

Consul General Carada responded by stating that she is making every effort to ensure the prompt official opening of the consulate as the inaugural Consul General in Busan. She added that she will faithfully serve as a bridge between Busan and the regions under the consulate's jurisdiction—including Gyeongsang-do, Jeolla-do, and Jeju—and, building upon activities such as attending the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, actively promote practical and diverse inter-local government exchanges following the official opening.

Mayor Jeon concluded the meeting by expressing his hope that today's encounter will serve as a starting point for Busan City and the Philippine Consulate General to write a new history of cooperation together, promising to actively collaborate with the consulate for mutual prosperity.
