=52 teams from nine countries take part in diverse performances as ‘I’m a Comedian Singer’ closes the festival

The 14th Busan International Comedy Festival (BICF) concluded its 10-day run in Busan on Aug. 30, bringing together comedians from South Korea and abroad for a diverse lineup of performances and programs.

The festival opened Aug. 21 and continued through Aug. 30 at venues across Busan. This year’s event featured 52 teams from nine countries, presenting theater performances, street shows, open concerts and other programs. The international lineup also highlighted the festival’s role as a platform for introducing comedy from different countries to Korean audiences.

On the final day, “Mandam Assembly@BICF” was held at Ocean Hall at the Busan Bank headquarters. Comedian Kwak Beom served as host, while four teams — Ttuksadae W, Boda, Heegeukin-j즈 and Youth Desk — presented comedy routines combining storytelling, banter and sketches.

The performers used improvised lines, character-driven situations and exchanges between team members to engage with the audience. Audience participation was incorporated into the performances, creating a more interactive live experience.

“ONGALS” was also performed at the Shinsegae Centum City Cultural Hall on the same day. The performers presented sketches from the perspective of five-year-old children, using everyday objects such as badminton rackets and toilet-seat covers as props.

The “National Talent Show” segment featured magic, juggling and dance performances, offering entertainment for both children and adults. The redesigned format placed greater emphasis on audience interaction and participation.

The festival’s official closing performance, “I’m a Comedian Singer,” was held at the Haneulyeon Theater at the Busan Cinema Center after all scheduled theater performances had concluded.

The show opened with a cheerleading performance by Sky Cheerleaders, followed by performances by Sambuj a, Japan’s Member and Lee Ji-yo. The program combined music and comedy, continuing the festival’s emphasis on cross-genre performances.

The closing event also featured the BICF Awards, which looked back on the festival’s 10-day run and recognized performers and teams in several categories.

Kwak Beom received the “Comedy YouTube Award,” presented to a comedian who has made a strong impact through YouTube during the year. Kwak, who has participated in BICF for 10 consecutive years, said the festival’s growth had accompanied his own development as a comedian. He also credited BICF with helping comedians develop their careers and said he planned to return next year with further growth.

The “Unknown Sea Award,” recognizing a team that has explored new territory on live platforms, went to “Park Sung-ho’s Comedy Assembly.” Comedian Park Sung-ho thanked fellow comedians Kim Joon-ho and Kim Dae-hee, who have helped lead the festival over the past 14 years, and expressed appreciation to those supporting comedians on the live-streaming platform SOOP.

The “Street King Award,” recognizing an outstanding performance among BICF’s street and open-concert programs, was presented to “231 Show.” The “Hot Sea Award,” given to a team that attracted strong popularity and audience response, went to “Woo Seok-hoon Comedy Short Series.”

Woo Seok-hoon said he was invited to the festival after one of his mime videos attracted attention. He then left the stage with a mime performance after accepting the award.

The “Sea of Laughter Award,” presented to an international performer for an outstanding comedy production, went to “Double.” The winning team shared its reaction to the award through a video message.

The “Busan Sea Award,” given to the Korean team presenting the best comedy performance, went to “Mandam Assembly@BICF.”

Accepting the award on behalf of the team, Kwak Beom said the performance had grown from an audience of just 12 people and that more younger comedians were now interested in developing the Korean storytelling-comedy tradition known as mandam. He said the team would return to BICF next year and hoped to remain part of the festival for decades to come.

Following the awards, the closing concert continued with performances by comedian-singers and musicians. Lee Bong-won, Lee Se-young and Young-ki performed on stage, while Cho Hye-ryun interacted directly with the audience during her performance.

Singer Yoon Soo-il closed the musical lineup with his signature song “Apartment,” prompting the audience to rise and sing along.

Kim Joon-ho, executive chairman of BICF, and Kim Dae-hee, a festival director, brought the event to a close by leading the audience in the festival slogan, “Busan Sea! Sea of Laughter!”

This year’s festival featured a wide range of performances involving Korean and international artists, demonstrating the versatility of comedy across theater, street performance, music and other forms of entertainment. The programs also provided opportunities for audiences of different ages and nationalities to experience comedy together.

BICF, established as Asia’s first international comedy festival, has spent the past 14 years promoting comedy culture and expanding opportunities for audiences to experience live entertainment. Organizers said they plan to build on this year’s international exchanges and performances to further develop the foundation for Korean comedy content and the broader comedy industry.
