[Here is the English version of the article] The 5th Change-Up Earth Film Festival Opens Sept 3... "Exploring the Climate Crisis and Earth's Future Through Film

=Record-Breaking Scale, Held Sept 3–7 at Busan Cinema Center... 2,764 Submissions from 148 Countries, Featuring Environmental Films, Contests, Conferences, and Hands-On Programs

The 5th Change-Up Earth Film Festival takes place from September 3 to 7 at the Busan Cinema Center and surrounding areas. Centered around the theme "Earth and Us," this year's festival highlights the severity of the climate crisis through film while encouraging everyday environmental action.

Out of the featured films, 32 titles will make their premiere to local and international audiences, including 3 World Premieres, 16 Asia Premieres, and 13 Korea Premieres.

The international competition section, the "Earth Award," received a record-breaking 2,764 submissions from 148 countries. Following preliminary judging, 17 films from 10 countries advanced to the final competition.

Co-organized by the Association for Finding the Rights of Nature and the Busan Cinema Center, the festival is supported by Busan Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment. Launched in 2022, the event seeks to raise public awareness about the climate crisis and foster discussions on a sustainable future.

[Opening Film - Jin Jae-woon's 'Song of the Trees' ... Opening Ceremony, Sept 3 at 7 PM, Busan Cinema Center Outdoor Theater]

This year's festival features 58 films from 29 countries centered on the climate crisis. The opening film is director Jin Jae-woon's 'Song of the Trees.' Instead of addressing the climate crisis through abstract theory, the film highlights concrete actions like planting and caring for trees to rebuild the connection between humanity and nature. The opening ceremony takes place free of charge on September 3 at 7 PM at the Busan Cinema Center Outdoor Theater.

Chang Young-ja, Chief Programmer of the festival, noted that external experts unanimously chose 'Song of the Trees' as their top recommendation. She added that the quiet power of the film, which features an 88-year-old woman planting trees for future generations, conveys what needs to be done in the age of climate crisis far better than words can.

Director Jin Jae-woon shared that while the film does not explicitly discuss the climate crisis, it offers a powerful warning alongside a message of hope. He expressed his wish for the film to serve as a starting point for people to realize that no one is exempt from the causes and consequences of climate change.

[4 Main Sections and Greenpeace Special Screenings]

The festival program is divided into four core sections: "Life After Climate Change," "The Right to Coexist," "Tables Saving the Earth," and "Living Earth," alongside short film selections and an online screening program called "Turn On the Earth: ON Shorts."

Continuing its collaboration with the international environmental organization Greenpeace since 2023, a special screening section will feature 12 newly released campaign videos, including the feature documentary 'Gaslighting: The Lies of Natural Gas' starring Jane Fonda. The section covers topics such as greenwashing, plastic pollution, power consumption in the AI industry, and ocean protection, alongside a special video message from Jane Fonda.

[5th Anniversary Earth Class Conferences: From Film to Real-World Dialogue]

Marking its 5th anniversary, the festival will host five "Earth Class" conferences. Experts from various fields will join audiences to explore environmental and social issues raised in the films and discuss practical paths toward change.

On September 4 at 10 AM in the Small Theater, the session "Searching for the Future Embedded in a Single Seed" will be held alongside the screening of 'The Heavenly Journey of a Papaya Seed.' Actor Kim Seok-hoon and Yang Kyung-mo, Chairman of the Green Education Center, will discuss the journey of a seed from the Amazon to the city and examine the relationship between seeds, life, nature, and humanity, moderated by broadcaster Seong Eun-jin.

At the same time in the Medium Theater, director Jin Jae-woon and Kim Jae-hyung, representative of Ihwa Seowon, will lead a conversation titled "In the Age of Climate Crisis, Why Trees?" using 'Song of the Trees' to reflect on the meaning of trees in modern climate action. The session will be moderated by Lee Mi-seon, former head of the Busan Education Training Institute.

On September 4 at 4:35 PM in the Cinematheque, "Is Our Future on the Water?" will address rising sea levels and housing justice in Busan and the Korean Peninsula following the screening of 'Is Our Future on the Water?'. Jeong Nae-kwon, Special Advisory Member on Climate Policy for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Korea's former Ambassador for Climate Change, will join the discussion, moderated by Chang Je-kuk, Chairman of the Festival Organizing Committee.

On September 5 at 1:30 PM in the Cinematheque, following the screening of 'We Must Survive,' a conference titled "Why Are We Closing Our Ears to Climate Science Narrative?" will take place. Choi Jae-chul, Chairman of the Climate Change Center who participated in the Paris Agreement negotiations, alongside climate scientists Kim Baek-min from Pukyong National University and Lee Joon-yi from Pusan National University, will discuss the warnings of climate science and society's response.

On September 6 at 12:30 PM in the Cinematheque, the session "Rights of Nature as Seen Through the Buam-dong Ginkgo Tree Poisoning Incident" will accompany the film 'Whose Land Is It?'. The panel will explore whether nature is human property or an entity with rights, connecting the UK's 'Right to Roam' movement to the real-life tree poisoning case in Busan. Peace activist Hwang Dae-kwon and Lim Jin-ah, academic team leader at Earth and People, will participate, with Jeong Dae-soo, principal of Masan Sinwol Elementary School, moderating.

[Eco-Professional Talks Expanding into Real-World Issues]

Following key film screenings, "Eco-professional Talks" will allow audiences to explore environmental issues with industry experts and connect screen stories to everyday life.

In 'Lost Words of Nature,' Lee Joo-hee, editor-in-chief of Cup & Cap, will discuss disappearing natural vocabulary. For 'Tobi and the Secrets that Move the Earth,' children's book author Lee Seong-sil will talk about viewing the planet through a child's eyes. In 'All Life Must Live,' Shim In-seob, representative of the animal protection organization LIFE, will address peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.

Discussions on specific climate realities will also take place. Lee Eun-young, Korea Representative for the International Rescue Committee, and Son Yu-jin, co-representative of GEYK, will join the talk for 'Romance in the Age of Climate Anxiety.' Lee Tae-geun, Chairman of Hulsalim, will participate in the session for 'Derrick vs. Derrick.' Professor Hong Seok-hwan from Pusan National University will speak on wildfires following 'Only on Earth,' while Professor Kim Hae-chang from Kyungsung University will talk after 'How to Use a Mountain.' Nam Jong-young, head of the Institute for Climate Change and Animals, will discuss biodiversity and wildlife after 'Song of the Last Whale.'

The Eco-professional Talk for the Greenpeace special screening 'Gaslighting: The Lies of Natural Gas' will take place twice, on September 4 and 5. Yang Yeon-ho, senior climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace Seoul, alongside volunteers from the Greenpeace Refresh Network, will discuss greenwashing in fossil fuel industries and link film themes to real-world activism.

Renowned environmental photographer and director Yann Arthus-Bertrand's 'Nature: A Call for Reconciliation' uses breathtaking aerial imagery to reframe the human relationship with nature, arguing that people must recognize themselves as part of the natural world rather than its conqueror.

[Interactive Environmental Exhibitions and Hands-On Programs]

Interactive exhibitions and hands-on activities will be open to the public on the 6th floor of the Busan Cinema Center from September 3 to 7. Visitors can create upcycled keyrings, explore AI-powered environmental experiences, and view winning works from the environmental poster contest.

These activities aim to make environmental issues accessible while encouraging practical conservation habits in daily life.

[Addressing the Climate Crisis and Pursuing a Sustainable Future]

Beyond highlighting environmental challenges, the festival uses film, art, and culture to inspire meaningful solutions and practical action in the era of climate crisis.

Through its record number of film entries, expert conferences, and community programs, the event offers citizens a well-rounded opportunity to view environmental issues from diverse perspectives and reflect on a sustainable future for the planet.
