[Here is the English version of the article]# Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam Selected for National Quantum Cluster Project
Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam have been selected for the national quantum cluster project, paving the way for the southeastern region to become a hub for quantum technologies linked to its key industries.
The three local governments announced on Sept. 2 that the “Southeastern Region Quantum Sensing Cluster” had been selected in a national quantum cluster competition organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The four-year project will run from 2027 to 2030, with the three cities and provinces working together to develop quantum sensing as a specialized field while strengthening technologies in quantum materials, components and equipment and quantum algorithms.
Pusan National University and UNIST will serve as technology hubs for research and development and technical support. Four industry demand hubs will focus on shipbuilding and marine industries, ports and logistics, aerospace and defense, and mobility and energy, linking quantum technologies with industries across the southeastern region.
The three governments will identify potential applications for quantum sensing in key regional industries and conduct pilot projects based on industrial demand and technological feasibility. They will also establish a support system connecting technology discovery, validation, field testing and commercialization so that quantum technologies developed by universities and research institutes can be applied in real-world industries.
The project will additionally support the development of quantum materials, components and equipment and research into quantum algorithms. A joint talent development program involving universities, research institutes and companies will be established to train specialists and create new high-skilled jobs for young people.
The total project budget will be determined following the finalization of the 2027 national budget. Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam plan to share the required local funding equally.
The three regional leaders said they would combine the region’s strong industrial base and research capabilities with quantum sensing, quantum components and equipment, and quantum algorithms to strengthen the competitiveness of key industries and develop the southeastern region into a leading global quantum hub in Korea.
