[Here is the English version of the article] Tugboat Capsizes and Sinks off Oryukdo, Busan: 1 Dead and 6 Missing

A 286-ton tugboat capsizes and subsequently sinks off the southeast coast of Oryukdo, Busan, while moving to tow a large commercial vessel, leaving one dead and six missing. The Coast Guard and military authorities mobilized maritime and aerial assets to launch a massive overnight search operation.

The Busan Coast Guard announced that it received a report at 1:29 p.m. on the 2nd stating that the towing tugboat TNS Catcher had capsized approximately 9 kilometers east of Oryukdo, Busan. The vessel had departed from the official vessel pier at Busan Port at around 10:15 a.m. that morning and was heading to tow the commercial ship M (a 66,332-ton Liberian-flagged full container ship) waiting at the incident area. The ship M, which was scheduled to be towed, directly reported the capsizing incident to the Busan Port VTS.

A total of eight crew members were on board, comprising six South Korean nationals and two Indonesians. Immediately after the accident, a 53-year-old Indonesian crew member, A, was rescued by the commercial ship M.

He was reported to be in good health and was transferred via a coastal rescue boat to the dedicated pier of the Busan Coast Guard Station. Subsequently, the Central Maritime Special Rescue Team entered the capsized vessel and found a 57-year-old South Korean crew member, B, at 2:14 p.m., who was transferred to a hospital but ultimately pronounced dead. The tugboat completely sank to the seabed at a depth of roughly 87 meters about two hours after capsizing, at 3:27 p.m. The remaining six missing crew members include five South Koreans and one Indonesian.

The Coast Guard activated Level 2 of the Regional Rescue Headquarters and initiated full-scale response operations to find the six missing crew members.

The search area around the sunken site—approximately 25 km in width and 12 km in length—was divided into 15 distinct zones. The intensive overnight search mobilizes a total of 19 vessels (11 Coast Guard vessels, 4 military vessels, and 4 public/fire vessels from Busan City and fire departments) and 3 aircraft (1 Coast Guard aircraft and 2 military aircraft).

Notably, 4 Navy ships are supporting the operation alongside the deployment of an unmanned underwater vehicle (ROV) from the salvage ship Gwangyang, while 2 Air Force aircraft and 4 military surveillance devices are also assisting. Furthermore, a total of 270 flare bombs (30 by the Coast Guard and 240 by the Air Force) are being dropped with Air Force cooperation to illuminate the search area through the night.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has established an investigation headquarters consisting of about 40 investigators to look into the exact cause of the accident by questioning the surviving crew member A and personnel from the container ship M, which docked at Jasongdae Pier at 8:30 p.m.
