[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산 해운대해수욕장 방문객이 올해 1,000만 명을 넘어선 가운데 해운대구가 82일간의 운영을 마치고 15일 해수욕장 문을 닫았다.

해운대구에 따르면 해운대해수욕장은 6월 26일부터 9월 15일까지 운영됐으며, 14일까지 누적 방문객은 1,014만7,200여 명으로 집계됐다. 휴대전화 위치 기반 빅데이터 방식으로 방문객을 집계하기 시작한 2020년 이후 해운대해수욕장 방문객이 1,000만 명을 넘어선 것은 올해가 처음이다.

송정해수욕장은 6월 26일부터 8월 31일까지 운영됐으며, 개장 기간 모두 164만8,700여 명이 찾았다.

해운대구는 올해 해운대해수욕장 방문객 증가의 주요 요인으로 기록적인 폭염과 적은 강수일수, 외국인 관광객 증가를 꼽았다.

부산시 자료에 따르면 올해 1월부터 7월까지 부산을 찾은 외국인 관광객은 292만674명으로, 지난해 같은 기간 200만466명보다 46.1% 증가했다.

해운대구 관계자는 “지난해까지는 7~8월 휴가철이 지나면 방문객이 줄어드는 것이 일반적이었지만, 올해는 9월에만 109만 명이 방문했다”며 “9월 방문객의 60~70%가 외국인 관광객일 정도로 해수욕장의 풍경이 달라졌다”고 말했다.

해수욕장 폐장 이후에도 안전관리는 이어진다. 해운대구는 추석 연휴와 늦더위를 피해 해수욕장을 찾는 방문객이 많을 것으로 보고, 오는 16일부터 27일까지 해운대해수욕장에 민간수상구조대 10명, 송정해수욕장에 4명을 배치한다.

야간 입수로 인한 안전사고를 예방하고 불법행위를 단속하기 위한 야간단속반도 9월 30일까지 운영된다. 해운대해수욕장에는 28명, 송정해수욕장에는 13명이 투입된다.

해운대구는 지난해에 이어 올해도 전국에서 유일하게 해운대해수욕장 운영 기간을 9월까지 연장했다. 구는 올해 방문객 1,000만 명 돌파를 바탕으로 내년에도 해운대해수욕장을 9월 중순까지 운영할 계획이다.

BUSAN, South Korea (AP) — More than 10 million people visited Haeundae Beach in Busan this year, the first time the popular beach has surpassed that mark since the city began using mobile-phone location data to track visitors in 2020.

Haeundae District said Tuesday that Haeundae Beach closed after an 82-day operating season that ran from June 26 through Sept. 15. About 10.147 million visitors had been recorded through Sept. 14.

Songjeong Beach, which operated from June 26 through Aug. 31, recorded about 1.6487 million visitors during its season.

The district attributed the increase at Haeundae Beach to a record-breaking summer heat wave, relatively few rainy days and a sharp rise in foreign tourists visiting Busan.

According to Busan city data, 2.926 million foreign tourists visited the city from January through July, up 46.1% from about 2 million during the same period last year.

“Until last year, it was common for the number of visitors to decline after the July-August vacation season,” a Haeundae District official said. “But this year, 1.09 million people visited in September alone, and foreign tourists accounted for 60% to 70% of September visitors. The scene at the beach has changed.”

Safety measures will continue after the official closing. Haeundae District plans to deploy 10 private water-rescue personnel at Haeundae Beach and four at Songjeong Beach from Sept. 16 through 27, anticipating continued visits during the Chuseok holiday and amid lingering summer heat.

Night patrol teams will also operate through Sept. 30 to prevent accidents involving nighttime swimming and crack down on illegal activities. The teams will include 28 personnel at Haeundae Beach and 13 at Songjeong Beach.

Haeundae District extended Haeundae Beach's operating season through September for the second consecutive year, making it the only beach in South Korea to do so, according to the district.

The district plans to extend the beach's operating season through mid-September again next year, citing this year's record visitor numbers.
