[Here is the English version of the article] Shark Spotted at Busan’s North Port Waterfront Park, Coast Guard Responds

A live shark estimated to be more than 3 meters long was spotted in the waters off Busan’s North Port Waterfront Park on Thursday, prompting the Korea Coast Guard to deploy patrol vessels and launch a joint response with police and firefighters.

The Busan Coast Guard said it received a report at around 8:57 a.m. that a shark had been seen in the waterfront park in Dong-gu, Busan.

The shark was described by the witness as having a brownish appearance and an estimated length of 3 to 3.5 meters.

The Coast Guard immediately dispatched a coastal rescue boat, patrol vessels and personnel from the Central Maritime Special Rescue Unit to the area to monitor the situation and ensure public safety.

It also notified the Busan Metropolitan Government and the waterfront park management center and requested that safety alerts and public announcements be issued to warn visitors. Police and firefighters were also asked to join the response, while local fishermen and water sports operators were notified and urged to take precautions.

The Coast Guard said it consulted the National Institute of Fisheries Science, which recommended guiding the shark toward open waters.

A Coast Guard official urged the public to stay away from the waterfront, warning that the shark could potentially become aggressive. “People are advised to avoid approaching the water’s edge at the waterfront park as a precaution against any possible danger,” the official said.
