Busan’s Suyeong District has won the Presidential Award at the 22nd Korea Local Government Management Awards for its Gwangalli M Drone Light Show, which was recognized in the cultural tourism category for its development of distinctive local resources.

The Suyeong District Office said the award, hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, recognizes the district’s efforts to use the Gwangalli M Drone Light Show to connect tourism, culture and local businesses while creating a sustainable model for nighttime tourism.

The Korea Local Government Management Awards are held annually to identify and honor innovative and outstanding policies and projects carried out by local governments across the country and to promote their wider adoption. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety evaluates local government initiatives based on their contributions to regional economic development and improvements in residents’ quality of life.

The Gwangalli M Drone Light Show takes place against the backdrop of Gwangalli Beach and the Gwangan Bridge, one of Busan’s most recognizable landmarks. The district said the show was highly regarded for creating a new tourism attraction while generating economic benefits for the surrounding area.

Suyeong District launched the country’s first permanent drone light show in April 2022 and has continued to hold regular performances every Saturday. In addition to the weekly shows, the district has developed programs such as drone coding classes for residents and a proposal competition, expanding the event into a broader cultural and tourism program.

As of the end of August 2026, a cumulative 6.12 million visitors had come to Gwangalli to watch the M Drone Light Show, according to the district. The district said the show has helped increase visitors’ time spent in the area and contributed to revitalizing the local economy.

Suyeong District Mayor Kang Seong-tae said the district plans to further develop nighttime tourism through the upcoming Gwangalli M Drone × Laser Show, combining drone performances with laser shows and the Gwangan Bridge’s architectural lighting.

“We will work to develop the show into a world-class nighttime tourism attraction that goes beyond Korea and serves as a leading global model for tourism,” Kang said.
