[Here is the English version of the article] Pusan National University Receives $7.4 Million Donation from Nexen Group Chairman
[BUSAN] — Pusan National University has received a donation worth about 10 billion won ($7.4 million) from Kang Byung-joong, chairman of Nexen Group, as the university marks its 80th anniversary.
The university held a ceremony Thursday to commemorate the donation and recognize Kang’s contribution to its future development. The event was attended by Pusan National University President Choi Jae-won, faculty members, students and alumni, as well as executives from Nexen Group and KNN.
Kang donated 1.54 million shares of Nexen Tire to the university on Aug. 13. The shares were valued at about 10 billion won at the time, making the contribution the second-largest individual donation in the university’s history.
The university plans to establish the Kang Byung-joong Research and Scholarship Fund with the donation. The fund will support research in future industries, including future mobility, provide scholarships for local talent and help finance a long-planned project to improve the university’s main gate.
The main gate project will cover an area of about 6,400 square meters. The university plans to create a symbolic space that reflects its history and identity and highlights its roots as Korea’s first privately founded university.
Kang has previously supported Pusan National University. In 1995, he donated 500 million won through Heung-Ah Tire, the predecessor of Nexen, to support the university. The funds were used to restore Mirinaegol, a natural valley on the university’s Jangjeon campus, helping create what is now known as the university’s “Path of Contemplation.”
Kang is an alumnus of Pusan National University’s Graduate School of Business and received an honorary doctorate in business administration from the university in 1995. He has also served as chairman of the Pusan National University Hospital Development Committee and president of the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
At the ceremony, Kang said he made the donation to help Pusan National University grow into a world-class institution while working closely with the local community as it begins its next 100 years.
Choi thanked Kang for the contribution, saying it would provide significant momentum for the university’s development and its efforts to nurture talented students who can contribute to regional development and balanced national growth.
The university presented Kang with its highest-level “Hyowon Certification Plaque” for major donors. The ceremony also included a special lecture by Kang and congratulatory performances by alumni.
