[Here is the English version of the article] Busan to Hold Public Briefing on Expansion of Saenggok Waste Incineration Facility
BUSAN — Busan city officials will hold a public briefing Monday on a planned expansion of a regional waste incineration facility in Saenggok Village, seeking to address residents’ concerns over the project’s progress and environmental safety.
The briefing is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Gangdong-dong Community Service Center. Officials will explain the project’s development, environmental and safety measures and other issues raised by local residents, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The Saenggok Village project calls for the construction of a regional incineration facility capable of processing 500 tons of waste per day, along with facilities for residents’ use, in the Saenggok-gil 26beon-gil 9-3 area of Gangseo-gu.
The project carries a total price tag of 456.2 billion won ($330 million), including 315.8 billion won for the incineration facility and 140.4 billion won for the relocation of residents. The city plans to complete the relocation of affected residents by the end of 2026 and finish construction of the facility by 2033.
Of the 162 households subject to relocation, 133, or about 82%, have already moved, according to the city.
Rather than simply presenting the project plan, city officials said the briefing will focus on questions residents have raised during the development process. Officials will provide details on the project’s progress and environmental safety and take questions from residents.
The city also plans to make publicly releasable administrative documents, including official correspondence and review materials produced during the project, available for residents to examine.
Shim Jae-min, head of Busan’s Environmental and Water Policy Office, said the city understands the concerns of residents in the nearby Eco Delta City area.
“We naturally understand the concerns and worries of residents of Eco Delta City,” Shim said. “This briefing is an opportunity to actively communicate with residents and provide them with the facts available to the city as transparently as possible.”
