[Here is the English version of the article] “Investigate DMZ Mine Blast Site Immediately,” Han Dong-hoon Urges Defense Ministry

Independent Rep. Han Dong-hoon of Busan’s Buk-gu Gap constituency on Thursday urged the Defense Ministry to immediately investigate the site of a suspected land mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone, accusing the government of delaying the probe until after the Chuseok holiday.

Han made the remarks during a news conference Thursday afternoon in front of the Defense Ministry in Seoul, where he also staged a one-man protest over the Sept. 21 explosion that seriously injured South Korean soldiers.

“South Korean soldiers and young people suffered serious combat injuries, including amputations, in the DMZ land mine explosion,” Han said. “Given the circumstances, it is believed to have been a North Korean mine.”

Han criticized the Defense Ministry for not conducting an on-site investigation three days after the explosion.

“The mine explosion occurred on the morning of Sept. 21, but the Defense Ministry has still not conducted an on-site investigation three days later and is saying it will begin the investigation after the Chuseok holiday,” Han said. “This is shocking.”

He also questioned comments by Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul suggesting that the mine could have been one planted by South Korean forces.

“Without even conducting an investigation, it appears that the Lee Jae-myung government hopes it was not a North Korean mine and, even if it was, does not want to upset North Korea,” Han said.

Han argued that any delay could result in the loss or contamination of crucial evidence.

“Whether it is an accident scene or a crime scene, finding evidence is a race against time,” he said. “Three days have already passed. Can anyone guarantee that North Korean soldiers have not planted evidence or that evidence has not been lost during those three days?”

Han also raised concerns about weather conditions during the Chuseok holiday, saying rain could wash away explosive residue and fragments that could be critical to determining the cause of the blast.

“If the investigation is not conducted immediately, there is a high possibility that evidence will be lost because of rain or wind,” Han said, referring to forecasts of showers during the holiday period.

He further claimed that the area is within a blind spot of South Korean military surveillance equipment, raising the possibility, in his view, that evidence could be manipulated or removed before investigators arrive.

“If the investigation is postponed because it is the Chuseok holiday, is the Defense Ministry saying that even if the enemy attacks South Korea and war breaks out during the holiday, it will not fight because it is a red-letter holiday?” Han said.
