브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 미국에서 열린 미중정상회담에서 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 시진핑 중국 국가주석을 서로를 치켜세우며 양국 관계 발전을 도모했다.

 

24일(현지시간) AP통신과 중국 관영 신화통신 보도에 따르면 시 주석과 부인 펑리위안 여사는 23일(현지시간) 전용기를 타고 워싱턴DC 인근 메릴랜드주 앤드루스 합동기지에 도착했다. 국빈 방문을 온 시진핑 부부 내외를 트럼프 대통령과 부인 멜라니아 여사가 직접 공항에 나와 맞이했다.

 

공항에는 전용기 계단 아래로 레드카펫이 깔렸고 미국 어린이들이 시 주석 부부에게 꽃을 건넸다. 의장병들이 레드카펫 양옆에 도열했으며 군악대는 양국 국가를 연주했다. 중국 외교부에 따르면 예포 21발도 발사됐고, 환영 행사 도중에는 미군 B-1 폭격기 2대가 상공을 비행하기도 했다.

 

트럼프 대통령은 환영 행사에서 "워싱턴에서 시 주석과 펑 여사를 맞이하게 돼 매우 기쁘다"며 "전 세계가 주목하는 방문"이라고 말했다.

 

이어 "시 주석은 위대한 지도자이고 지금은 위대한 순간"이라며 "시 주석과 심도 있게 의견을 교환하고 양국 관계 발전을 추진하기를 기대한다"고 밝혔다.

 

시 주석은 공항에서 직접 연설하는 대신 서면으로 방미 메시지를 발표했다. 시 주석은 중국 국민을 대신해 미국 국민에게 인사를 전하며 "중국과 미국은 모두 위대한 국가이고, 양국 국민도 모두 위대한 국민"이라고 밝혔다.

 

이어 양국 국민이 오랫동안 교류해 왔고 서로의 이해관계도 깊이 연결돼 있다며 "양국은 경쟁자가 아닌 파트너가 돼야 한다"고 강조했다.

 

시 주석은 중화민족의 위대한 부흥과 트럼프 대통령이 내세운 '미국을 다시 위대하게'(MAGA)가 "양립할 수 있고 서로의 성취에 도움이 될 수 있다"고 주장했다. 양국이 서로의 발전을 돕는다면 세계에도 이익이 될 것이라고 했다.

 

지난 5월 트럼프 대통령의 중국 방문 당시 논의도 언급했다. 시 주석은 당시 두 정상이 미중 간 건설적이고 전략적으로 안정된 관계를 구축하기로 했다고 밝혔다.

 

그러면서 "중미 양측은 협력을 우선하고 경쟁은 정도가 있게 해야 하며 이견은 통제가 가능하도록 추진해야 한다"며 "평화를 기대할 수 있는 안정적 관계를 형성하도록 추진해야 한다"고 말했다.

 

시 주석은 이번 방미 기간 트럼프 대통령과 양국 관계 및 국제 정세의 주요 현안을 논의하고 미국 각계 인사들과 만나 교류와 협력의 폭을 넓히겠다는 뜻도 밝혔다.

 

한편 시 주석의 미국 국빈 방문은 2015년 이후 11년 만이다. 두 정상은 24일 백악관에서 회담할 예정이다. 양국 정상의 회담에서는 무역과 기술, 대만 문제 등 주요 현안이 논의될 전망이다.

At the US-China summit held in the United States, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged mutual praise and sought to advance relations between their two nations.

 

According to reports from the AP and China's state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 24th (local time), President Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, near Washington D.C., aboard their private jet on the 23rd. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump personally greeted the couple at the airport for their state visit.

 

A red carpet was laid out at the foot of the aircraft's stairs, and American children presented flowers to President Xi and his wife. Honor guards lined both sides of the red carpet, and a military band played the national anthems of both countries. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, a 21-gun salute was fired, and two U.S. B-1 bombers flew overhead during the welcoming ceremony.

 

At the ceremony, President Trump remarked, "I am very pleased to welcome President Xi and Madame Peng to Washington," adding, "The whole world is watching this visit."

 

He continued, "President Xi is a great leader, and this is a great moment," stating, "I look forward to exchanging views in depth with President Xi and advancing the development of relations between our two countries."

 

Instead of delivering a speech at the airport, President Xi released a written message regarding his visit. Conveying greetings to the American people on behalf of the Chinese people, he stated, "China and the United States are both great nations, and the people of both countries are great peoples." He went on to emphasize that the peoples of the two nations have long engaged in exchanges and share deeply intertwined interests, stating, "The two countries should be partners, not rivals."

 

President Xi argued that the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" and President Trump's "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) agenda are "compatible and can mutually reinforce each other's achievements." He added that if the two nations support each other's development, it would benefit the entire world.

 

He also referred to discussions held during President Trump's visit to China last May, noting that the two leaders had agreed at the time to build a constructive and strategically stable relationship between the U.S. and China.

 

He stated, "Both sides should prioritize cooperation, keep competition within reasonable bounds, and manage differences effectively," adding that they should strive to "establish a stable relationship that fosters peace."

 

President Xi also expressed his intention to discuss key issues regarding bilateral relations and the international landscape with President Trump during his visit, as well as to meet with figures from various sectors of American society to broaden the scope of exchange and cooperation.

 

Meanwhile, this marks President Xi's first state visit to the U.S. since 2015. The two leaders are scheduled to hold a summit at the White House on the 24th, where they are expected to discuss major issues such as trade, technology, and the Taiwan question.
