[Here is the English version of the article]  Trump, Xi Stress Cooperation at White House Dinner as AI, Taiwan and Trade Dominate Summit

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the long history of ties between their countries and called for continued cooperation at a White House state dinner, while artificial intelligence, Taiwan, trade, rare earths and other strategic issues remained at the center of their summit talks.

Trump Highlights Long History of U.S.-China Ties

Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to the White House on Thursday evening, praising the hospitality he received during his visit to Beijing earlier this year.

“Melania and I are delighted to welcome you once again to the White House,” Trump said. “The hospitality of the Chinese people was on full display during my visit to Beijing earlier this year,” he added.

Trump said he hoped to return that hospitality during Xi’s first visit to Washington in more than a decade. “Tonight we hope to show you the same honor as you return to Washington for the first time in over a decade,” Trump said.

Trump also highlighted the long history of exchanges between the two countries. “Since the first trade ships from New York left the harbor to arrive on the banks of the Pearl River, Americans and Chinese have always exchanged goods, knowledge, customs, and ideas,” he said.

“This has been the foundation of commerce and mutual respect between our countries,” he added.

Different Systems, Enduring Ties

Trump acknowledged the differences between the political systems of the United States and China while emphasizing ties between their peoples.

“President Xi and I both understand that we represent different systems, but the ties between our people endure,” Trump said. “We’ve never gotten along better,” he added.

Trump said the two countries could continue building a relationship aimed at promoting prosperity and security. “Together we can continue to build a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations,” he said.

AI, Taiwan and Trade at the Center of Talks

While the state dinner focused heavily on friendship and history, the leaders’ summit earlier in the day addressed some of the most difficult issues in the U.S.-China relationship.

Artificial intelligence was among the central issues. The two countries are competing for leadership in AI while also confronting questions about AI safety, technological controls and the technology’s broader economic and national-security implications.

Xi said during the summit that the two countries should ensure that AI development remains under human control, according to reports on the talks.

Taiwan was another major point of contention. Xi urged Trump to oppose “Taiwan independence,” according to a Chinese government readout. The issue of U.S. arms support for Taiwan was also part of the broader discussions surrounding the summit.

Trade and rare earths were also key issues. Xi said the two countries had reached a new trade arrangement during the summit, although details were not immediately disclosed.

The two sides also discussed the supply of rare earth elements, which are critical to a wide range of industries and technologies, as part of broader efforts to stabilize economic ties.

Trump Offers Xi a Look at New White House Ballroom

Trump also departed from his prepared remarks to invite Xi and Peng to see the construction site of the White House’s planned new ballroom.

“I just want to say I had to do it,” Trump said before announcing the invitation.

He said presidents had sought to build such a facility for more than 150 years. “Presidents have been trying to get this built for 150 years,” Trump said. “And they will shortly have it.”

Trump told Xi and Peng that they would be among the first people to step into the new facility.

Xi Calls Summit a Historic Moment

Xi thanked Trump and first lady Melania Trump for the reception and preparations for his visit.

“You and Mrs. Trump have made many special arrangements for our visit, all prepared with meticulous care and consideration in every detail,” Xi said.

“You make us feel truly at home,” he added.

Xi described the recent exchanges between the two presidents as historically significant.

“In less than half a year, the Chinese and American presidents have exchanged state visits, making history in our bilateral engagement,” Xi said. “Today, President Trump and I had sincere and in-depth exchanges and reached common understanding on many issues,” he added.

Xi said the discussions had added new substance to what he described as a constructive U.S.-China relationship of strategic stability.

A History of War, Trade and Diplomacy

Xi traced the relationship between the two countries back more than two centuries, pointing to trade and cultural exchanges after American independence.

“Our two countries started trading with each other, exchanging goods to meet each other’s needs and draw on our complementary strengths,” he said.

Xi also recalled cooperation during World War II.

“Over 80 years ago, the Chinese and American people stood shoulder to shoulder in a fight against Japanese militarist aggressors,” he said.

“Such a friendship, forged in blood and fire, will surely live on through the generations,” Xi added.

He also cited the role of pingpong diplomacy in the normalization of relations. “Over 50 years ago, ping-pong diplomacy between China and the United States opened the long-closed door of bilateral exchanges,” Xi said.

He said leaders on both sides subsequently began the historic process of normalizing relations.

Xi Calls for a New Approach

Xi said the two countries had reached another important point in their relationship. “Today, we have come to another historic juncture for China-U.S. relations,” he said.

Referring to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda and China’s goal of national rejuvenation and modernization, Xi said, “These two goals are both ambitious and can surely be mutually reinforcing.”

He called on Washington and Beijing to act as responsible major powers. “China and the United States must act as responsible major countries, meet the expectations of our peoples, keep pace with the trend of our times, and explore a new approach for major countries to get along with each other,” Xi said.

An Eagle as a Symbol of Friendship

Trump presented Xi with a gift featuring a bald eagle, a national symbol of the United States. “The bald eagle is a national symbol of the United States and an embodiment of the free and soaring spirit of America,” Trump said. “We hope it’ll find a nice place, a wonderful place in Beijing,” he added.

Trump concluded his toast by wishing for peace and prosperity. “May all of our people know a future of harmony, peace, and success,” he said.

Xi ended his remarks with a toast to the two countries. “I would like to propose a toast to the health of President and Mrs. Trump, to the prosperity and progress of China and the United States, and to the friendship between our two peoples,” Xi said.

The warm rhetoric at the state dinner contrasted with the difficult issues addressed during the summit, including AI, Taiwan, trade and critical mineral supplies. The talks reflected both leaders’ emphasis on maintaining dialogue and the continuing differences over strategic and economic issues between Washington and Beijing.
