South Korean Men's Sabre Team Wins Gold, Achieving 4th Consecutive Asian Games Title...Defeats Japan 45-44 in Team Final; Oh Sang-uk Claims Double Gold

By Park Dong-je, Break News — The South Korean men's sabre fencing team has achieved a historic milestone by winning gold at the Asian Games for the fourth consecutive time.

The South Korean team—comprising Oh Sang-uk, Park Sang-won, Do Gyeong-dong, and Hwang Hee-geun—defeated Japan 45-44 in the men's sabre team final at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on the 26th. This marks the 15th gold medal for the South Korean delegation at the games.

Notably, the team secured their fourth straight victory, having previously topped the podium at the 2014 Incheon, 2018 Jakarta-Palembang, and 2022 Hangzhou Games.

Oh Sang-uk, the veteran star of Korean fencing, swept both the individual and team events to become a double gold medalist at the tournament. He achieved the honor of winning two gold medals for the second consecutive time, following his performance at the 2022 Hangzhou Games.

Meanwhile, the "2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games," which kicked off with an opening ceremony on the 19th, is currently in the midst of a 16-day competition. As of the 26th, South Korea ranks third overall with a total of 72 medals: 15 gold, 21 silver, and 36 bronze. China currently holds first place (105 gold, 39 silver, 27 bronze; total 171), while the host nation, Japan, sits in second place (31 gold, 47 silver, 47 bronze; total 125).

The "2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games" emphasizes Asian harmony and solidarity under the slogan "Imagine One Asia, Unite Here." Forty-five nations are participating in the event, which runs for 16 days from September 19 to October 4, featuring competitions across 43 sports.

South Korea has dispatched a delegation of 1,051 people—comprising 791 athletes, 219 team officials, and 41 headquarters staff—across 41 sports. Having finished third overall at the previous Hangzhou Asian Games (42 gold, 59 silver, 89 bronze), South Korea aims to retain that third-place standing in this tournament.
