<아래는 영문 기사의 전문>On the 26th, during the Chuseok holiday, Jang Dong-hyuk, a representative of the People Power Party, continued his fierce criticism of President Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party of Korea.
He took issue with the government's response to a recent suspected landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), raising the possibility of presidential accountability and even impeachment.
Writing on social media that day, Representative Jang stated, "It seems President Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party believe they can cover everything up simply by attacking the opposition," adding, "They have once again trotted out their stale repertoire of claims about 'distortions' and 'conspiracy theories.'"
He continued, "Regarding North Korea's 'wooden-box mine' provocation, President Lee Jae-myung has not uttered a single word so far—even while he is in Mexico." He criticized the president, asking, "Is he truly the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces when he remains tight-lipped even after our soldiers suffered severe injuries, including the loss of their feet?"
He further asserted, "A greater threat to South Korea's national security than North Korea's 'wooden-box mines' is the President's own 'tight-lipped silence.'"
He also raised strong objections regarding the delay in investigating the accident site.
Representative Jang claimed, "They haven't even begun the on-site investigation yet," adding, "It has even rained, yet they likely failed to preserve the scene." He characterized this as "clear destruction of evidence."
He went on to say, "If it is belatedly revealed to be the work of North Korea, public anger will be directed squarely at this administration for its consistently sluggish response," adding, "And if they announce that it was *not* North Korea's doing, the entire nation will rise up in protest." Regarding the government's statement that "there are no grounds to suspect irregularities or raise doubts about the investigation," he retorted, "Is there even a single citizen who would believe that?"
However, military authorities maintain that they are investigating while keeping all possibilities open, having not yet pinpointed the exact cause of the accident. The military stated it is examining various scenarios, including mines newly planted by North Korean forces, displaced mines, and mines laid by friendly forces in the past.
In particular, military authorities emphasize the need to consider the risk of further accidents during site access and the investigation process. The Democratic Party also countered that the military is minimizing the risk of secondary accidents while maintaining a thorough readiness posture, accusing the opposition party of disparaging the military's response. The Democratic Party characterized the People Power Party's offensive as an attempt to politicize national security.
Representative Jang also took issue with the government's response regarding the repatriation of North Korean prisoners of war. He remarked, "President Lee Jae-myung hurriedly posted a statement on the issue of repatriating North Korean POWs," arguing, "He must have felt anxious that North Korea's Kim Jong-un would get angry once the truth—which he had wanted to keep hidden—was revealed by Ukraine."
He added, "Wasn't it kept under wraps because it was an inconvenient matter for Kim Jong-un?" and asked, "Is it because 'protecting Kim Jong-un's mood' is more important than immediate approval ratings?"
He also criticized the President's remarks directed at the opposition party. Representative Jang noted, "He unleashed accusations, calling the opposition party 'murderers' or 'traitors' for their legitimate criticism," and retorted, "Isn't the administration that sends North Korean defectors back to their deaths the real 'murderer'?" He went on to argue, “Isn’t a president who cannot utter a single word when our merchant ships come under missile attack or when our soldiers lose their legs to landmine provocations a ‘traitor’?” adding, “The people will judge who the ‘murderer’ and who the ‘traitor’ is.”
Regarding Democratic Party lawmaker Park Jie-won’s criticism of the administration, he remarked, “He pretends to criticize the government, but if you look at his true intentions, he is actually ‘shielding the president.’ He implies the president is blameless and the fault lies with the administration. That is wrong.”
Representative Jang asserted, “The root cause of all these wrongs is President Lee Jae-myung,” reiterating, “To say it again, President Lee Jae-myung is the ‘wooden-box landmine’ threatening South Korea’s national security.”
He continued, “We must remove this ‘wooden-box landmine’ from our security landscape before more of our soldiers are injured and before the lives of our citizens are put at risk.”
Notably, he even raised the possibility of presidential impeachment toward the end of his statement. Representative Jang argued, “The clock ticking toward impeachment is speeding up,” adding, “If they attempt to pull the wool over the public’s eyes through half-hearted cover-ups, they will only be adding more grounds for impeachment.”
Earlier, on the 25th, Representative Jang had demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the landmine explosion, asserting, “Delaying it by even a single second would amount to a deliberate and manipulative cover-up of the facts.”
He also argued, “There is a very high probability that these were landmines recently planted by North Korean troops; if so, it constitutes a clear act of aggression,” and demanded that the Ministry of National Defense disclose details such as the locations of the first and second explosions, the timing of the incident report, and whether the president was briefed on the matter. He further argued that “altering the configuration itself constitutes a clear act of aggression,” adding that “if the President was briefed on this yet failed to take any action—thereby leading to this incident—it would be grounds for impeachment.”
In the concluding remarks of his post, Representative Jang continued his offensive against the government, stating, “The person the President should be fighting right now is Kim Jong-un, not Rhyu Si-min.”
