=7th Overall Asian Games Gold Medal

Break News (Reporter Park Dong-je) – The South Korean national baseball team defeated host nation Japan to secure its fifth consecutive Asian Games title.

Led by manager Ryu Ji-hyun, the South Korean team won the gold medal by defeating Japan 3-1 in the baseball final of the "2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games," held on the 27th at Toyohashi Municipal Stadium in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. This marks the 21st gold medal for the South Korean delegation at this tournament.

South Korea, which had lost 0-5 to a Japanese team composed of industrial-league (semi-pro) players in the first game of the Super Round on the 25th, successfully redeemed itself and claimed the championship in the final match held two days later.

With this victory, South Korean baseball has won its fifth consecutive title—following wins at Guangzhou 2010, Incheon 2014, Jakarta-Palembang 2018, and Hangzhou 2022—and secured its seventh gold medal in Asian Games history.

Meanwhile, the "2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games" kicked off with an opening ceremony on the 19th, launching 16 days of intense competition; as of the 27th, South Korea ranks third overall with a total of 83 medals: 21 gold, 23 silver, and 39 bronze. China holds first place (119 gold, 49 silver, 39 bronze; total 207), while the host nation, Japan, ranks second (37 gold, 62 silver, 58 bronze; total 157).

The "2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games" emphasizes Asian harmony and solidarity under the slogan "Imagine One Asia, Unite as One Here." Forty-five nations are participating in the event, competing for medals across 43 sports over a 16-day period from September 19 to October 4.

South Korea has dispatched a delegation of 1,051 people—comprising 791 athletes, 219 team officials, and 41 headquarters officials—across 41 sports. Having finished third overall at the previous Hangzhou Asian Games (42 gold, 59 silver, 89 bronze), South Korea aims to retain that third-place ranking in this tournament as well.
