=45-31 Victory Over Japan; 20th Gold Medal for Team Korea

By Park Dong-je, Break News – The South Korean women’s sabre fencing team defeated host nation Japan to claim the team gold medal for the first time in eight years.

The Korean team—comprising Jeon Ha-young, Kim Jung-mi, Seo Ji-yeon, and Choi Se-bin—won the final match against Japan with a score of 45-31 at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, on the 27th during the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. This marks the 20th gold medal for the South Korean delegation at the games.

With this victory, the Korean women’s sabre team has reclaimed the title of Asian champions for the first time in eight years since the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games. They had previously settled for a bronze medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Games, a result that left them with a sense of regret.

Following the men’s team—comprising Oh Sang-uk, Park Sang-won, Do Gyeong-dong, and Hwang Hee-geun—who defeated Japan on the 26th to achieve their fourth consecutive Asian Games title (2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026), the women’s team also secured a victory over Japan. This achievement marks the first time in eight years that Korean sabre fencing has swept both the men’s and women’s team titles.

South Korean fencing concluded its campaign at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a total of 10 medals: four gold, four silver, and two bronze.

Meanwhile, the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games kicked off with an opening ceremony on the 19th, launching 16 days of intense competition. As of the 27th, South Korea ranks third overall with a total of 81 medals—20 gold, 23 silver, and 38 bronze. China holds first place (117 gold, 48 silver, 39 bronze; total 204), followed by host nation Japan in second (37 gold, 60 silver, 57 bronze; total 154).

The 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games emphasize Asian harmony and solidarity under the slogan "Imagine One Asia, Unite as One Here." Forty-five nations are participating in the event, which runs for 16 days from September 19 to October 4, featuring competitions across 43 sports.

South Korea dispatched a delegation of 1,051 people—comprising 791 athletes, 219 team officials, and 41 headquarters staff—across 41 sports. Having finished third overall at the previous Hangzhou Asian Games (42 gold, 59 silver, 89 bronze), South Korea aims to retain that third-place standing in this tournament.
