[Here is the English version of the article] PPP leader urges halt to what he calls ‘expropriation’ of farmland and property
Jang Dong-hyuk, leader of South Korea’s conservative People Power Party, on Saturday called for an immediate halt to what he described as the government’s “expropriation of farmland, real estate and people’s property,” sharply criticizing President Lee Jae-myung’s agricultural and housing policies.
In a Facebook post, Jang described the public mood during the Chuseok holiday as “volatile,” saying public anger was “on the verge of exploding.”
“Many people asked when the next presidential election would be,” Jang said. “When I told them it was still three and a half years away, they sighed deeply and asked how they could possibly endure until then.”
Jang also criticized Lee’s recent trip to the United States, saying some people told him they “would rather he not come back” after seeing news of the president’s visit.
“This is the sentiment of the Korean people right now,” Jang said, adding that farmers in particular were “extremely angry.”
He said farmers who had spent their lives working the land were upset that they were being portrayed as property speculators.
“Farmers are already struggling because there are so few young people left in rural areas,” Jang said. “They are angry that comprehensive farmland inspections and other measures could drive even the remaining young farmers away from agriculture.”
Jang also criticized the government’s policy of potentially forcing the sale of farmland that is not being cultivated.
“Many people have pleaded, ‘Why is the president taking away my land? Please stop this,’” he said.
He questioned the government’s focus on cracking down on people who allegedly made large profits through farmland speculation.
“Even if there are a handful of speculators, is destroying the livelihoods of farmers the government’s agricultural policy?” Jang said. He added that, outside a limited number of areas near major cities, even the state-run farmland bank is often reluctant to purchase farmland.
“What does it have to do with speculation if farmers own a few plots of land and either farm them themselves or have someone else cultivate them?” he said.
Jang urged the government to halt comprehensive farmland inspections and forced-sale measures and instead focus on raising farm incomes and developing policies to support young farmers.
He also criticized the government’s housing policies, saying many people were worried about finding homes as the end-of-year moving season approaches.
Jang said Lee had presented a slight decline in home prices in Seoul’s affluent Gangnam district as a major achievement, while housing prices in other areas had risen.
“Many people I met said they simply do not understand what President Lee’s goal is,” he said. “They had been saving money, living comfortably in rental housing and hoping to eventually buy a home, but they say the housing situation has become a nightmare under the Lee administration.”
Jang questioned whether the government’s goal was simply to bring down housing prices in Gangnam.
“Even if home prices in Gangnam fall, what benefit does that provide ordinary people if prices in other areas continue to rise?” he said.
He also cited rising rents and difficulties obtaining mortgages, saying many ordinary people were struggling to afford housing.
“People are losing sleep over rent and housing costs,” Jang said. “Jeonse housing is disappearing, monthly rents are rising, and people are being forced to move away from their neighborhoods in search of cheaper housing.”
He also criticized the tax burden on homeowners, saying some elderly people who had spent their lives saving to buy a home could be forced to sell because they could not afford their tax bills.
Jang further cited difficulties facing small-business owners and young people, saying businesses were struggling amid weak sales while young people were having difficulty finding jobs.
“Prices and interest rates remain high, making ordinary people’s wallets even thinner,” he said.
Jang concluded by accusing the government of seeking to take away farmland, homes and other property belonging to citizens.
“The government must immediately stop the expropriation of farmland, the expropriation of real estate and the seizure of people’s property,” he said.
