[Here is the English version of the article] Busan Film Studio to Begin Trial Operations in November...Set to Become Hub for Film and Video Production

=Three indoor studios and four outdoor filming areas set to open, Virtual Production Facility to Be Completed in the First Half of Next Year...with full launch planned for first half of 2027

The Busan Film Studio in Gijang County will begin trial operations in November as the Korean Film Council seeks to establish the facility as a new hub for film and video production.

On the afternoon of the 29th, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) held a media day at the Busan Studio in Gijang-gun, Busan, unveiling its construction progress, major facilities, pilot operations, and future expansion plans. Aiming for an official opening in the first half of 2027, the studio plans to expand its facilities in stages to decentralize film production infrastructure—which is currently concentrated in the capital region—to Busan.

Largest Public Film Studio Complex in Korea...Spanning 158,000㎡, 3 Studios and 4 Outdoor Sets

The Busan Studio was established on a site of approximately 158,000㎡. It is the largest among currently operating public comprehensive studios, featuring 3 indoor studios and 4 outdoor sets.

Studio 1 is approximately 1,000 pyeong (approx. 3,300 sq. meters) in size, equipped with a filming space 66.6m wide, 42m long, and 13m high. It is utilized as a flagship studio for large-scale sets and major film productions.

Studio 2, sized at 650 pyeong (approx. 2,150 sq. meters), measures 49.8m wide, 33.6m long, and 13m high. It is designed to be utilized in various forms depending on the production scale and content, and is expected to serve as a primary filming space for film and video production companies.

Studio 3 is built as a 450-pyong (approx. 1,480 sq. meters) virtual production studio. In a space measuring 46.5m wide, 25.6m long, and 14m high, large LED walls and other installations are planned to enable the implementation of real-world locations or environments directly inside the studio.

There are 4 outdoor sets in total, with the largest one reaching approximately 8,260 pyeong (approx. 27,300 sq. meters). The remaining sets are built on a scale of 1,500 to 2,300 pyeong (approx. 4,950 to 7,600 sq. meters), allowing for large-scale outdoor sets as well as filming across a wide variety of genres.

Virtual Production Facility to Open Next Year

KOFIC plans to invest about 14 billion won ($10 million) to build the virtual production facility in Studio 3.

The facility will use large LED walls to recreate locations and environments inside the studio in real time. The technology can reduce restrictions caused by weather and location while allowing productions to work around actors' schedules.

Unlike the LED wall currently operated by the Busan Film Commission, the new facility will use LED panels with a smaller pixel pitch of 1.5 to 2.3 millimeters, helping reduce visible pixels on camera.

The LED wall will also have a movable structure, allowing cameras to move inside the wall and capture scenes from different angles.

KOFIC said the facility could be used for scenes such as car chases, dangerous sequences and sunsets that are difficult to shoot on location, as well as settings that are difficult or impossible to recreate in the real world, including outer space and foreign locations.

Construction and testing are scheduled to be completed in the first half of next year. KOFIC also plans to offer technical training and production support programs for filmmakers.

Five-Month Trial Run Begins in November

The studio will operate on a trial basis for about five months, from November through March.

Studios 1 and 2 and all four outdoor filming areas will be available during the trial period. Studio 3 will remain closed while the virtual production facility is being installed.

KOFIC is currently accepting applications for productions seeking to use the facility during the trial period and plans to select the participating projects in early October.

During the Busan International Film Festival, KOFIC also plans to invite film and video production professionals to tour the complex and explore potential production opportunities.

The official opening is scheduled for the first half of 2027, once the virtual production facility has been completed and tested.

Further Expansion Planned

KOFIC said the current facilities represent the first phase of a larger master plan that includes second- and third-phase development.

The agency plans to secure additional funding and expand the complex, including consideration of additional studios of up to about 2,000 pyeong, or roughly 6,600 square meters.

The complex also includes an art workshop facility where sets can be built, transported to the studios and stored after filming.

KOFIC is also considering relocating or reusing some permanent sets from the former Namyangju General Film Studio if production schedules and other conditions allow.

Future phases are expected to include tourism and educational programs, allowing students and young people to experience film sets and learn about the production process.

Incentives to Offset Higher Production Costs

KOFIC is targeting major film and video production companies based in the Seoul metropolitan area, with the goal of spreading production infrastructure beyond the capital region.

But the distance between Seoul and Busan could increase transportation and other production costs for some projects.

To address the issue, KOFIC is working with the Busan Metropolitan Government and Gijang County to link the studio with existing location incentives.

Busan currently offers location incentives of up to 60 million won per production, while Gijang County provides incentives ranging from 40 million won to as much as 100 million won for location filming.

KOFIC has proposed a one-stop support system that would allow productions using the Busan Film Studio to apply for related incentives through a single process.

It has also suggested that Busan and Gijang be considered pilot areas for higher location-incentive limits under the government's planned expansion of such programs. KOFIC is considering discounted studio rates for local filmmakers as well.

Linking the Studio With the Local Film Industry

Accommodation for production crews is another issue being addressed.

KOFIC and Gijang County are surveying nearby hotels and other lodging facilities and exploring partnerships with businesses in the nearby Osiria tourist district to provide discounts for film crews.

The agency plans to collect data on the number of crew members and length of stay for productions using the studio and use that information in negotiations with local accommodation providers.

KOFIC is also looking beyond the studio grounds to identify nearby locations suitable for filming, including areas such as Ahopsan Bamboo Forest, in cooperation with relevant organizations.

Replacing the Former Namyangju Studio

The Busan Film Studio project dates back to 2005. The Gijang site was selected and a basic agreement was signed in 2015. After the Namyangju General Film Studio was sold in 2016, KOFIC drew up plans for a new production complex in Busan.

After operations at Namyangju ended in 2019, KOFIC developed a master plan for the Busan facility and proceeded with design and administrative procedures.

Construction and project-management contracts were signed in April 2024, and construction began the following month. The facility was completed in August after about 28 months of construction and received final approval for use in September.

Han Sang-jun, chairman of KOFIC, said the Busan studio was created to replace the former Namyangju facility following KOFIC's relocation to Busan and to help address the concentration of production infrastructure in the Seoul metropolitan area.

“We will support film and video productions in Korea and abroad by connecting the studio with Busan's film industry base and its diverse locations,” Han said.

KOFIC said it aims to develop the Busan Film Studio beyond a simple filming facility into a production hub capable of attracting domestic and international productions while expanding opportunities for local filmmakers and related businesses.
