[Here is the English version of the article] Han Dong-hoon: “Films That Distort Historical Facts Deserve Criticism — Freedom of Expression Includes the Right to Criticize” =Criticizing 'The Assassins': “What if a film claiming the May 18 uprising was carried out by North Korea, or that the Sewol ferry disaster was caused by the Democratic Party, had been released?”
Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon, who represents Busan’s Buk-gu A district, criticized the film 'The Assassins', saying that while he opposes government censorship of films before their release, criticizing a commercially released movie for distorting historical facts is itself protected by freedom of expression.
Han made the remarks on social media on Sunday.
“Movies are a form of creative expression, and prior censorship is unconstitutional. I oppose prior censorship,” Han wrote. “However, when a commercially released film distorts historical facts to stir controversy and make money, it is legitimate to criticize the film and its creators.”
“This is even more so when such distortions are linked to a particular political narrative,” he added.
Han cited hypothetical examples involving two major events in modern Korean history.
“If a movie claiming that the May 18 Democratic Uprising was carried out by North Korea had been released, or if a movie claimed that the Democratic Party was responsible for the Sewol ferry disaster, it would have faced widespread criticism,” he wrote. “Likewise, this film (The Assassins) deserves to be criticized. Freedom of expression includes the freedom to criticize.”
Han said he opposes both restrictions on creative expression and prior censorship of films, but argued that films that distort historical facts can be subject to criticism after their release. By invoking the May 18 uprising and the Sewol ferry disaster as hypothetical examples, he emphasized that criticizing films for distorting historical events is also part of freedom of expression.
