[Here is the English version of the article] Busan City, Ruling and Opposition Parties Hold First Talks on Key Regional Issues and 2027 State Funding
Busan city officials and local leaders of the ruling and opposition parties held their first joint meeting Wednesday to discuss major issues facing the city and ways to secure national government funding for key projects in 2027.
Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo met with Park Hong-bae, chairman of the Busan chapter of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Lee Seong-kwon, chairman of the Busan chapter of the People Power Party, at Busan City Hall at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday for the “Busan Development Tripartite Meeting.”
The meeting brought together the city government and the two major political parties to share information on pressing regional issues and seek practical ways to work together for Busan’s development.
The meeting was organized after Lee proposed greater cooperation between the city government and the ruling and opposition parties during a budget policy meeting between the People Power Party and Busan City on Sept. 2.
The participants discussed a range of major issues, including the proposed relocation of state-owned financial institutions such as the Korea Development Bank to Busan as part of the second phase of relocating public institutions outside the capital region.
They also discussed the timely opening of Gadeokdo New Airport and the need to reflect realistic construction costs, the undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Line railway, the conversion of Baptist Hospital into a public hospital, the development of a multimodal transportation hub at Bujeon Station and measures to ensure a safe and stable drinking water supply.
Other issues on the agenda included the planned integration of low-cost carriers, the proposed integration of the Busan and Gyeongnam regional port authorities, legislation to establish Busan as a global hub city, the reconstruction of Sajik Baseball Stadium and the designation of Eulsukdo as a national urban park.
The participants also focused on securing national funding for major projects planned for next year.
Busan City presented 17 priority projects for which it is seeking national funding, including the establishment of a National Quantum Innovation Center, a total-care AX platform linking physical AI with community-based care services, the creation of a blockchain innovation district, the construction and operation of a maritime and port AX demonstration center, and the development of a next-generation power semiconductor production platform.
Other funding priorities include the establishment of infrastructure to support AI-based carbon measurement and reduction programs tailored to industrial complexes.
The city and the two parties also exchanged views on policy issues of particular interest to each party, while seeking areas of common ground based on the interests of Busan residents and the city’s long-term future.
Park Hong-bae, chairman of the Busan chapter of the Democratic Party, said cooperation across party lines was essential to successfully carry out major projects and secure national funding.
He said the parties would establish a regular channel for discussions through meetings such as the tripartite talks and work to produce tangible results that residents could feel in their daily lives.
Lee Seong-kwon, chairman of the Busan chapter of the People Power Party, said the city’s outstanding issues were closely tied to residents’ lives and the future of Busan, making active efforts essential.
He said the meeting should serve as a venue for finding concrete solutions and turning discussions into results, adding that his party would continue to work on issues affecting Busan.
Mayor Jeon said that although the ruling and opposition parties may have different political values and views, they should be willing to work together when a proposal benefits the lives of citizens.
He called for the city’s political parties to put residents’ lives and Busan’s future above political differences and maintain sustained cooperation for the city’s development.
Busan City said it plans to use the meeting as an opportunity to strengthen communication and cooperation between the city government and the two parties, while continuing to develop a joint response system for major regional issues and efforts to secure national funding.
