Busan artists are presenting the results of international collaborations with artists in Taiwan and Japan, showcasing a joint exhibition in Taipei and a co-created outdoor street performance in Shizuoka.

The Busan Cultural Foundation said it will present the results of its 2026 residency activation project through an international group exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei and a Korea-Japan collaborative performance in Shizuoka.

Launched for the first time this year, the project expands on the foundation’s existing residency support program by establishing direct partnerships with overseas cultural institutions. It connects Busan artists with local artists for cultural exchange, research, collaborative creation and public presentations.

Rather than focusing solely on artists’ stays abroad or exhibitions and performances, the project emphasizes participation throughout the creative process, from planning and research to production and presentation.

The first project, “When Tomorrow Is Forgotten” (當未來不再被紀念), will run from Oct. 3 to Nov. 22 at MoCA STUDIO on the first floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei.

The exhibition is co-curated by Kim Jung-hoon and HUANG Yi-Hsuan and features six artists: Busan-based artists Kim Deok-hee, Son Hye-min and Jung Hyun-jun, along with Taiwanese artists CHIU Wei-Hsiang, KUO Yu-Ping and Wan-Chien CHENG.

Set against the backdrop of rapidly aging societies in South Korea and Taiwan, the exhibition explores themes including life and care, memory, aging and family, and migration.

In Shizuoka, Japan, a Busan performing arts group and Strange Seed Shizuoka will present “Walking On,” a jointly created outdoor street performance on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. The performance will be held in conjunction with a reenactment of a Joseon Tongsinsa procession at the Okitsu Fair in Shizuoka City.

The Joseon Tongsinsa were Korean diplomatic missions sent to Japan during the Joseon Dynasty. The performance reinterprets their legacy of peace and cultural exchange through the story of an “envoy from the future.”

Heo Seok-min of the Korean group Ttatteushan Saram and Hamayoshi Seitaro of Japan are co-directing the production.

The Busan Cultural Foundation selected participating artists in April. The artists then conducted local research and developed ideas in Taipei in June, followed by a Korea-Japan collaborative creation workshop in Shizuoka in September.

The foundation said the project has established a model for international collaboration in which artists work together throughout the entire creative process, from planning and research to production and local presentation.

Song Sung-joon, president of the Busan Cultural Foundation, said the new program focuses on the process of Busan artists creating new works together with artists overseas.

“We hope the collaborative experiences gained in Taipei and Shizuoka will help strengthen the creative capabilities of the participating artists and expand the foundation for international cultural exchange in Busan,” Song said.
