[Here is the English version of the article] Busan to Host Asia Startup Expo Focusing on Maritime Industry and AI
BUSAN, South Korea — Busan will host an Asia-wide startup expo next month, bringing together startups, investors and industry officials around two of the city’s strategic sectors: maritime industries and artificial intelligence.
The Busan Metropolitan Government said the fifth edition of FLY ASIA 2026 will be held Oct. 7-8 at BEXCO Exhibition Center 1.
This year’s event has been substantially redesigned around the maritime industry and AI, with an emphasis on expanding opportunities for startups and investors from South Korea and abroad to build business and investment partnerships.
The event will be 1.5 times larger than last year, with 49 organizations from 18 countries taking part in the Global Pavilion and a newly created Maritime Special Pavilion.
The two-day expo will feature an opening ceremony, conferences, a limited partner and venture capital forum, exhibitions and one-on-one business meetings between startups and investors.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 7 on the main stage. It will include a video presentation, performances, speeches and keynote addresses attended by domestic and international business and startup officials.
Maritime investor Mark Hwang will deliver a keynote address on developments and prospects in the maritime industry and global startup and investment markets. Saeed Al-Madani, a commercial officer at the Saudi Arabian Embassy, will also give a presentation.
The Maritime Special Pavilion, being held for the first time in partnership with the Korea Maritime and Ocean University, will bring together maritime organizations, major companies, startups and global institutions to showcase technologies and products.
The pavilion will also offer demonstrations and open-innovation sessions designed to identify opportunities for technological and business cooperation.
A maritime open-innovation reverse-pitching program will allow large and midsize maritime companies to present their technology and business needs first and then meet startups that may be able to address them.
A nationwide maritime startup competition will also be held to identify and support promising companies in the sector.
Other maritime-focused programs will include discussions and startup competitions on marine environmental issues for middle school students.
The expo is also expanding its one-on-one business matching program beyond investment to include open innovation and buyers, giving startups more opportunities to secure investment and business partnerships.
For the first time, organizers will introduce their own business-matching app. Participants will be able to search for potential partners based on industry, type of cooperation and investment stage, arrange meetings in advance and connect with investors and companies at the event.
A forum for limited partners and venture capital firms will provide a venue to discuss recent investment trends and build networks among investors.
The expo will also introduce a digital LED exhibition that allows startups to promote their businesses without setting up physical booths. Information on participating companies will be displayed on four LED screens at the venue, with QR codes linking visitors directly to company websites and contacts.
The system is intended to reduce the cost and logistical burden of operating exhibition booths while allowing investors and buyers to connect more freely with participating companies.
Additional exhibition areas will focus on strategic industries, investment firms and global participants, with startups and related organizations from South Korea and abroad expected to take part.
More than 40 countries were represented at FLY ASIA 2025, which featured more than 52 programs and 1,271 one-on-one business meetings. The event attracted 19,235 visitors, according to the city government.
Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said this year’s expo has been redesigned around the maritime industry and AI and expanded to provide more opportunities for startups and investors to connect.
The city plans to strengthen support for companies and investors seeking new business and investment opportunities in Busan, he said.
