[Here is the English version of the article] Busan to Resume Rescue Operation for Shark ‘Bukang’ With Nets, Boats
Busan city officials will launch a renewed effort Oct. 2 to return a shark nicknamed “Bukang” to its natural habitat after it remained in a scenic waterway at the North Port Waterfront Park despite an earlier attempt to guide it out. The follow-up operation will use a large custom-made net and two boats to prevent the shark from swimming back into the waterway and guide it toward the open sea.
The city said the operation will begin at 3:30 p.m. near the park’s fourth pedestrian bridge, following preparations and a rehearsal by a joint rescue team.
Large net to block escape route The National Institute of Fisheries Science has prepared a custom-made barrier net measuring 50 meters wide and 6.8 meters high.
Weights will be attached to the bottom of the net to minimize the gap between the net and the floor of the waterway, preventing the shark from slipping underneath and returning farther into the channel.
One boat will tow the center of the net, while 10 people stationed along the waterfront, five on each side, will hold and adjust the net as it moves.
When the shark moves toward the entrance of the waterway, the net will be moved in the same direction. If the shark turns back, the net will be stopped and secured to block its return.
Water-pump boat to guide shark toward open sea A second boat equipped with a water pump will operate behind the net and, depending on conditions, create foam in the water to encourage the shark to move naturally toward the open sea.
Personnel will also be stationed along the waterfront to track the shark’s location and communicate its movements to the rescue team using illuminated signal batons.
Experts to monitor shark’s condition Officials said the shark’s safety and health will be the top priority throughout the operation.
Experts from the National Institute of Fisheries Science will monitor the shark’s condition and behavior in real time. The team will adjust the speed and method of the operation depending on the shark’s response and any signs of stress.
Officials said the operation will proceed cautiously, with the shark’s condition taken into account at each stage rather than forcing it toward the open sea.
Second attempt after failed operation The city conducted an initial guidance operation on Sept. 29 using a boat and a water pump, but the shark did not leave the waterway and could not be released.
For the second attempt, officials will deploy the barrier net and water-pump boat simultaneously to improve the chances of successfully guiding “Bukang” back into the open sea.
The city said the new approach is designed to control the shark’s movement within the waterway while gradually directing it toward its natural habitat. <
