[Below is the English version with the Korean source] Busan Youth Groups Urge Mayor Jeon Jae-soo to Issue Statement Following Guilty Verdicts against Former Aides for Evidence Destruction

About 30 members of youth organizations in the Busan region held a press conference calling on Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo to state his position regarding allegations that he received money and valuables from the Unification Church during his tenure as a member of the National Assembly. The demand comes in the wake of four former aides being found guilty of evidence destruction.

During a press conference at the Busan City Council briefing room on the 2nd, youth group members urged, "The aides stood trial, but why does the politician they tried to protect remain outside the scope of accountability? Mayor Jeon must stop hiding behind his aides and explain himself directly to the citizens of Busan."

This press conference follows a ruling by the Busan District Court’s Western Branch on the 30th of last month, which found all four former aides of Mayor Jeon guilty of evidence destruction.

The court sentenced the former senior secretary to one year in prison and placed him under court custody. A level-4 aide received an eight-month prison sentence suspended for two years along with 120 hours of community service, while a level-8 secretary in their 30s and an intern secretary in their 20s were each fined 3 million won.

The case stems from December 10 of last year when, anticipating a police search and seizure, the aides allegedly deleted data from office computers and damaged storage devices at Mayor Jeon's regional office in Busan. Investigators found that the hard drives and SSDs had been damaged and subsequently discarded in a separate location.

A major issue in the trial was whether the statute of limitations for the alleged bribery charges against Mayor Jeon had already expired. The defendants argued that because the statute of limitations had run out, the crime of evidence destruction could not be established.

However, the court ruled that if the investigation confirms the amount of money or valuables received was 30 million won or more, the statute of limitations for the related crime could extend to 10 years or longer, meaning it could not be concluded that there was no possibility of criminal prosecution against Mayor Jeon at the time.

The court also rejected the defendants' argument that the destroyed storage devices contained no data directly related to the bribery allegations. It determined that the devices likely contained materials relevant to the investigation, such as Mayor Jeon's schedule and meeting records, and noted that even if the evidentiary value of the data were limited, it would not affect whether the crime of evidence destruction was established.

Nevertheless, this ruling is the court’s judgment concerning the evidence destruction charges against the former aides; it does not constitute a judicial acknowledgment that Mayor Jeon actually received money and valuables from the Unification Church. Mayor Jeon's own alleged receipt of money and potential criminal liability are matters to be determined through separate investigations and judicial procedures.

Despite this distinction, the youth organizations argued that since the former aides have been punished, Mayor Jeon must also bear political and moral responsibility for the incident. "Politics where responsibilities are pushed downward while power is enjoyed at the top cannot be trusted," they stated, repeatedly demanding that Mayor Jeon provide a public explanation regarding the allegations and the circumstances of the incident.
