[Here is the English version of the article] 2026 Busan International Marketing Advertising Festival to Open on August 26

The 2026 Busan International Marketing Advertising Festival, better known as MAD STARS, will take place from August 26 to 28 at Signiel Busan and venues across the Haeundae area. One of Asia’s largest international events for marketing, advertising, and digital content, this year’s festival will feature about 40 conference sessions and introduce AI-powered multilingual interpretation for the first time.

Now in its 19th year, MAD STARS 2026 will be held under the theme “AMPLIFY: Amplify the Possibilities.” As advances in artificial intelligence and other technologies continue to transform everything from advertising production to the way brands communicate with consumers, the festival will explore how creative ideas can gain greater impact when combined with technology and create new possibilities.

The festival’s main programs include the opening ceremony and dinner on August 26, a networking reception on August 27, and the awards ceremony and closing dinner on August 28. Conferences, exhibitions, and a business market will run throughout the festival from August 26 to 28. The New Stars and Young Stars competitions for junior advertising professionals and university students from around the world will also take place from August 25 to 28.

Through these programs, the festival will bring together industry leaders and professionals from around the world to examine the latest developments and creative trends in advertising and marketing while promoting networking and collaboration among industry professionals in Korea and abroad.

This year, MAD STARS will introduce AI-powered multilingual interpretation services for the first time at its conferences and exhibitions. Participants will be able to select their preferred language on their smartphones and listen to real-time translations of presentations by international speakers.

The exhibition will also use AI to provide information in multiple languages, including Korean, English, Japanese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Filipino, and Vietnamese. The service will translate not only text but also words appearing in images, audio from videos, and information about submitted works. It will also take cultural context and expressions into account so that international visitors can better understand the ideas and messages behind each campaign.

The organizers say the introduction of AI-powered services this year is the first step toward expanding the use of AI throughout the festival ahead of its 20th anniversary next year.

New Health and AI Categories

MAD STARS 2026 has also revamped its award categories to reflect rapid changes in the industry. Entries have been reorganized into two broad groups based on the nature and role of creativity: the SOLUTION Group and the POSITIVE IMPACT Group.

Two new award categories have also been introduced. Health Stars will recognize creative work in health and wellness, while the Use of AI category will honor creative applications of artificial intelligence, including generative AI, in the craft of advertising.

All entries must disclose whether AI was used in their creation. If AI was used, entrants must also explain how it was applied, strengthening transparency and fairness in the judging process.

Entries were submitted from 83 countries over a four-month period beginning in early February. A total of 313 preliminary judges from around the world reviewed the entries online and selected the finalists. The final judging panel consists of 43 judges from 28 countries. They will conduct the second-round and final judging in person in Busan on August 24.

The festival’s top honors, including the Grand Prix of the Year, will be announced at the awards ceremony at Signiel Busan at 5 p.m. on August 28. One Grand Prix winner will be selected from each of the two major groups.

Raja Rajamannar and Lim Ji-young to Receive Special Honors

The opening ceremony will also feature the presentation of the International Honor Award and the Achievement Award, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the advertising and marketing industry.

Raja Rajamannar, Mastercard’s senior fellow and former chief marketing and communications officer, will receive the International Honor Award. During his 12 years leading Mastercard’s marketing and communications, Rajamannar expanded the company’s iconic “Priceless” brand platform into a global, experience-driven marketing property and pioneered strategies that combined technology, data, and creativity.

His achievements have earned him recognition in the Forbes CMO Hall of Fame, the American Marketing Association’s Marketing Hall of Fame, and the American Advertising Federation’s Advertising Hall of Fame.

The Achievement Award will go to Lim Ji-young, president of the Korea Association of Advertising Film Production Companies. Over the past two decades, Lim has produced more than 3,500 advertising films, including brand campaigns for major Korean companies and global campaigns. Since becoming president of the association in 2022, she has worked to improve production conditions, protect creators’ rights, train industry professionals, and strengthen the global competitiveness of Korea’s advertising film industry.

Global Industry Leaders to Discuss Creativity and the Future of Marketing

The festival’s conference program will feature approximately 40 sessions covering major changes and emerging opportunities in advertising and marketing, including AI and human creativity, fandom and culture, brand growth, and consumer relationships.

The keynote sessions on August 27 will feature Raja Rajamannar and Tara McKenty, chief creative officer at AKQA.

Rajamannar will discuss the limitations facing traditional marketing strategies and organizations amid rapid changes in technology, data, and culture. He will also introduce his concept of “Quantum Marketing,” which calls for a fundamental redesign of marketing strategies in response to new technologies and changing consumer behavior.

McKenty, together with AKQA managing director Justine Leong, will explore how technology and human imagination can come together to create new forms of creativity, possibilities, and impact.

The festival’s five jury presidents will also participate in the conference, sharing the creative trends they have identified in this year’s entries, key themes that emerged during the judging process, and the directions the industry should focus on going forward.

Other speakers include Noël Bunting, chief creative officer at Publicis London, who will address transparency, fairness, copyright, and creators’ rights in an era of AI-generated content; Oh Jae-ho, CEO of PYLER, who will discuss how brands can identify trustworthy content by analyzing context in the age of generative AI; Ilya Andreyev, executive creative director of Cheil Worldwide CIS, who will examine enduring principles of creativity through real-world advertising cases; and Deep Chhabria, creative lead for marketing partnerships in Asia-Pacific at Netflix, who will share strategies for turning fan interest and engagement into storytelling and brand collaborations.

Beauty Brands from Korea, China, and Japan to Share Marketing Strategies

A special program will examine marketing strategies used by leading beauty brands in Korea, China, and Japan.

Takuma Kobayashi, president and CEO of POLA Corporation in Japan, will discuss how art and creativity can be incorporated into brand experiences to create distinctive value.

Ryu Hye-jung, director of Demand Creation at Unilever Carver Korea, will use the Korean skincare brand AHC’s rebranding as a case study to explain how culture, communities, and content can strengthen consumer relationships and drive brand growth.

Que Zheng, chief external relations officer at CHANDO Group in China, will discuss how the company has built its brand identity around the nature and culture of the Himalayas and combined technology, culture, and emotion to strengthen its competitiveness and achieve growth.

The festival will also feature a specialized program on the future of the out-of-home advertising industry. Hosted by the Korea OOH Association on August 28, the program will focus on the shift toward data-driven outdoor advertising, which measures not only how many people see an advertisement but also who sees it, when they see it, and what results it generates.

Experts from Korea and abroad will discuss how data and AI are changing advertising effectiveness measurement and operations, as well as the future development of the Korean and Asian markets and opportunities for international cooperation.

Philippines Featured in First Country Spotlight Program

For the first time, MAD STARS will introduce a country spotlight program dedicated to showcasing the advertising, marketing, and creative industries of one selected country each year. The first featured country is the Philippines.

In partnership with adobo Magazine, a leading Asia-Pacific creative media outlet based in the Philippines, the festival will present the special exhibition “Galing Pilipinas.” The Filipino word “Galing” carries the meanings of both “from” and “excellence,” reflecting the exhibition’s focus on ideas originating in the Philippines and the creativity behind them.

During the festival, major Philippine campaigns from the 1980s to the present, along with past Philippine-winning entries at MAD STARS, will be showcased. The exhibition will also explore the cultural and social backgrounds behind the campaigns, highlighting the evolution and distinctive characteristics of Philippine creativity.

A networking party featuring Philippine culture and local food and beverages will be held on August 26. On August 28, a conference will explore how an understanding of Philippine culture and people can influence brand strategy and creative work.

Dennis Perez, head of marketing at Unilever Beauty & Wellbeing, will discuss how brands can create a sense of belonging based on culture. Merlee Jayme, creative chairmom at Jaime Headquarters, will share how ideas originating in the Philippines can develop into concepts that resonate with audiences around the world. David Guerrero, chairman and chief creative officer of BBDO Guerrero, will highlight the power of Philippine creativity to turn limitations into new ideas and opportunities through globally recognized campaigns.

New Stars and Young Stars Challenge Future Creative Talent

The New Stars and Young Stars competitions, designed for junior advertising professionals and university students from around the world, will take place from August 25 to 28 at Signiel Busan.

New Stars will bring together 63 junior advertising professionals from nine countries with five or fewer years of experience. Young Stars will feature 93 university and graduate students from 10 countries.

The program will also include opportunities for participants to meet judges and attend special lectures, allowing them to gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of the global advertising and marketing industry.

The winners will be announced at the MAD STARS 2026 awards ceremony on August 28 and will receive gold, silver, bronze, and crystal awards. Young Stars winners will also have opportunities to take part in internships with related companies in Korea and abroad.
