[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 제30회 부산국제영화제(BIFF)가 17일 오후  영화의 전당 야외무대에는 국내외 영화인과 관객 5000여 명이 참석한 가운데 화려한 레드카펫 행진을 시작으로 뜨거운 열기 속에서 막을 올렸다.

 

영화제의 꽃 레드카펫 행진에는 월드스타 감독인 박찬욱, 개막무대 MC이자 개막영화 '어쩔 수가 없다'의 주연 배우인 이병헌을 비롯해 배우 손예진, 박희순, 이성민, 염혜란, 배종옥, 이혜영, 하정우, 한효주, 한소휘, 황보슬혜, 조우진, 김유정, 이유미, 정우 등과 미국 헐리우드 명감독 기예르모 델 토로, ‘히트’의 마이클 만 및 폴 앤더슨 감독과 배우 밀라 요보비치, 일본 국민배우 오카다 준이치, 후지사키 유미아, 아야노 고, 하야시 유타, 올해의 아시아영화인상 수상자 자파르 파나히 감독, 홍콩 배우 양가휘, 까멜리아상 수상자 실비아 창 감독(대만), 한국영화공로상의 정지영 감독, 최휘영 문체부 장관, 박형준 부산시장 등이 화려하게 수를 놓았다.

 

개막 무대는 배우 이병헌이 단독 사회를 맡아 진행했다. 30년간의 연기 인생을 걸어온 그는, 마치 자신의 영화 인생과 영화제가 함께 성장한 듯한 감정을 드러내며 “저는 1991년에 데뷔했는데, 1995년에 첫 영화를 찍었다. 그리고 지금 올해, 30년 차 영화가 있다. 이 순간을 함께 나눌 수 있어 행복하다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

그는 "공제(公曆)의 백기 중에 삼십 일이 있다. 서른에 비로소 선다라는 뜻"이라며 "인생의 정오, 그 서른이라는 시간이 영화제에도 도래한 것 같다. 이제서야 정말 영화제가 배우가 됐다는 생각이 든다"라며 영화제의 30주년을 성숙과 시작의 시점으로 표현했다.

 

첫번째 순서로 대만 출신의 배우이자 감독, 프로듀서, 시나리오 작가로 50여 년간 활약해 온 실비아 창(Sylvia Chang)이 ‘2025 까멜리아상(2025 Camellia Award)’을 수상했다.

 

이번 시상은 샤넬코리아 대표 클라우스 올데거(Claus Oldager)가 맡았으며, 그는 실비아 창의 창작자로서의 업적과 여성 영화인으로서의 의미 있는 기여를 강조하며 수상자 선정 배경을 전했다.

 

수상 소감에서 실비아 창은 “이렇게 뜻깊은 상을 받게 되어 진심으로 감사하다”며 배우, 프로듀서, 아내, 어머니 등 다양한 삶의 역할을 병행하면서도 영화에 대한 열정을 놓지 않았던 자신의 여정을 회고했다. 이어 “도전의 순간들이 오히려 나를 앞으로 나아가게 한 원동력이었다”고 덧붙이며, 열정과 사랑을 상징하는 동백꽃의 꽃말을 인용해 영화에 대한 헌신과 깊은 애정을 표현했다.

 

실비아 창은 지난 50여 년간 아시아 영화계에서 선도적인 역할을 맡아왔으며, 100편 이상의 작품에서 세대와 장르를 넘나드는 연기를 선보였다. <20 30 40>(2004), <마음의 속삭임>(2015), <상애상친: 여자 이야기>(2017) 등을 연출하며 감독으로서의 역량도 입증했다. 그의 이러한 예술적 성취와 영향력은 아시아 여성 영화인의 목소리를 높이는 데 크게 기여했다고 평가받는다.

실비아 창의 전방위적 공로는 프랑스 문화예술훈장 슈발리에, 아시아필름어워즈 평생공로상, 우디네극동영화제 골든멀버리평생공로상 등 다양한 국제적 수상으로 이어졌으며, 후배 영화인들의 성장을 이끄는 멘토로서도 귀감이 되어 왔다.

 

이어진 개막선언에는 박형준 부산시장과 박광수 이사장이 무대에 올라 공식적인 영화제 시작을 알렸다. 아울러, 부산국제영화제는 한국 영화의 현대사를 꿰뚫는 문제의식을 작품으로 풀어온 원로 영화감독 정지영에게 ‘한국영화공로상’을 수여했다.

 

올해 79세의 정지영 감독은 여전히 창작의 의지를 불태우고 있다. 그는 수상 소감에서 지난 세월을 회상하며 “영화계의 시작은 곧 나의 삶이었다"며 "영화 반 세기를 살았다. 흔들리는 시대 속에서 중심을 잡을 수 있었던 건, 동료들이 있었기 때문이고, 무엇보다 한국 영화가 새롭고 힘차게 나아가야 할 사명을 함께 공유했기 때문"이라고 밝혔다.

 

정 감독은 “지금 한국 영화가 위기라고 하지만, 우리는 언제나 그 위기를 뚫고 새로운 영화, 의미 있는 영화로 나아갈 준비가 되어 있다”라며, 후배 영화인들에게 응원과 믿음을 건넸다.

 

또 올해의 아시아영화인상에는 자파르 파나히 감독이 수상했다. 정치적 억압과 검열 속에서도 영화로 저항해온 이란의 거장 자파르 파나히 감독은 2000년 이후, 정부의 통제로 인해 해외 출국은 물론, 영화 제작조차 금지된 상황에서도 멈추지 않고 작업을 이어가며 세계 영화계에 큰 울림을 주고 있다.

 

파나히 감독은 영상으로 전달된 수상 소감을 통해 “17년 전, 부산국제영화제를 찾은 뒤로, 저는 다시는 자유롭게 이 자리에 설 수 없었다. 나라를 떠날 수도, 영화를 자유롭게 만들 수도 없었습니다”라며 자신의 현실을 고백했다.

이어 그는 “하지만 지난 40년간 한국이 영화의 자유를 위해 싸워온 것처럼, 저도 저만의 방식으로 그 싸움을 이어가고 있다. 이 상은 그 싸움의 최전선에 있는 모든 독립 영화인들에게 바친다”라며 깊은 울림을 남겼다.

 

올해 신설된 ‘경쟁 부문’ 심사위원 소개가 이뤄졌고,  한국 배우로는 한효주가 참여했다.  아울러, 지난 3월 영화제 집행위원장으로 취임한 정진석 위원장이 무대 인사를 통해, 이번 행사를 ‘역사적 전환점’이라 규정하며, 영화제의 새로운 방향성에 대한 깊은 책임감을 드러냈다.

 

그는 무대 인사에서 “제가 집행위원장직을 맡은 것이 지난 3월 2일부터인데, 그 이후로 지금까지 굉장히 숨가쁘게 달려왔다”며, “바쁘긴 했지만, 제30회 부산국제영화제라는 역사적인 행사에 함께할 수 있다는 것만으로도 무척 의미 있는 시간이었다”고 소회를 밝혔다.

 

이어 그는, 지난 수개월 동안 영화제 운영 체계를 개선시키기 위해 많은 노력을 해왔다”고 설명하며, “부산국제영화제가 단순한 축제를 넘어, 글로벌 경쟁영화제로 거듭나야 할 시점”이라며, 언제나 활기차고, 함께 웃고 즐길 수 있는, 더 풍요로운 영화제를 만들기 위해 노력하겠다고 강조했다.

 

마지막 순서로 개막작인 '어쩔 수가 없다' 박찬욱 감독과 출연배우 이병헌, 손예진, 박희순, 이성민, 염혜란이 무대에 올라 작품에 대한 소개를 했고 소감을 밝혔다.

 

배우 손예진은 밝은 미소로 “아마… 정말 오랜만에 부산국제영화제에 오게 된 것 같다. 이번이 30주년이다. 그리고 저희 영화가 개막작으로 선정된 것도 너무 영광스럽고, 그래서 오늘 이 밤은, 제게 정말 잊을 수 없는 날이 될 것 같다. 사실 오늘 비가 올까 봐 걱정을 많이 했는데 다행히 비가 오지 않아서, 그것도 너무 감사하다. 정말 한국에서 처음으로 이 영화를 보여드리는 자리다. 근데… 이상하게 베니스에서 상영할 때보다 더 떨리고, 더 설레인다. 뭐랄까, 내 집 앞마당에서 처음 선보이는 느낌이다?”라고 밝혔다.

 

이어서 마이크를 넘겨받은 배우 박희순은 영화의 성격을 소개하며 "영화 '어쩔 수가 없다'는 블랙 코미디이다. 가장 극적인 수사와 가장 강력한 유머가 공존하는 작품이다. 그래서 솔직히… 영화를 보다 보면, 웃어야 할지, 울어야 할지, 굉장히 난감할 수 있다. 하지만 어쩔 수가 없다. 그런 영화이다.”고 말했다.

 

현장의 분위기가 웃음으로 가볍게 달아오르자, 박희순은 "“그래서 저는 운동을 추천드린다. 웃으라고 만든 영화이고, 그냥 즐겁게 보시고, 재미있게 보신 다음, 집에 가시는 길에는 조용필 님의 '고추잠자리'를 한 번 들어보세요. 그러면 오늘 이 영화, 한 번 더 생각나실 것"이라고 위트 있는 마지막 멘트에 관객석은 환한 웃음과 박수로 화답했고, '어쩔 수가 없다'의 첫 국내 공개는 이렇게 따뜻한 분위기 속에서 시작됐다.

이병헌은 "30년 동안 연기를 해왔지만, 오늘 이 자리만큼 감정이 북받치는 순간은 없었던 것 같다"라며 "이 무대에서 여러분들께 이 감정을 선물처럼 전할 수 있어 정말 행복하다. 무엇보다 이 자리에 계신 여러분이 계시기에 영화가 있고, 배우가 존재할 수 있다는 것을 잊지 않겠다.”라고 감사를 전하며 " 박찬욱 감독님의 새로운 세계로 여러분을 안내한다. 우리는 지금, 국제영화제를 함께 하고 있다.”라고 내년을 기약하며 개막무대 마지막을 장식했다. 

 

부산국제영화제는 17일부터 26일까지 영화의 전당 등 7개 극장, 31개 스크린에서 총 328편의 영화를 상영하며, 부산 전역에서 개최된다. 공식 초청작은 64개국 241편으로 전년 대비 17편이 증가했다. 커뮤니티비프의 87편을 포함하면 총 328편이 소개된다. 관객 편의를 위해 CGV센텀시티 IMAX관, 소향씨어터 신한카드홀, 부산시청자미디어센터 등이 상영관으로 추가되었다. 

 

328편 상영작 중 공식 초청작 64개국 241편이며 ▲월드 + 인터내셔널 프리미어 99편, ▲월드 프리미어 90편, ▲ 인터내셔널 프리미어 9편, ▲ 커뮤니티비프 상영작 87편 등이다. 상영관은 영화의전당, CGV센텀시티, 롯데시네마 센텀시티, 영화진흥위원회 표준시사실, 동서대학교 소향씨어터 신한카드홀, 부산시청자미디어센터 등이다. 커뮤니티비프는 메가박스 부산극장, 부산가톨릭센터 공간 101.1 등이다.

S. Anderson and actress Milla Jovovich; Japan’s national actors Okada Junichi, Fujisaki Yumia, Ayano Go, Hayashi Yuta; this year’s Asia Filmmaker Award recipient Jafar Panahi; Hong Kong actor Yang Ka‑Fai; Camellia Award winner Sylvia Chang (Taiwan); Korean Cinema Achievement Awardee Chung Ji‑young; Culture/Arts Minister Choi Hwi‑young; Busan Mayor Park Heong‑joon—all adorned the event with a splendid presence.

 

The opening stage was hosted solely by actor Lee Byung‑hun. Having taken on 30 years of acting life, he expressed an emotion as if his own film life and the film festival had grown together: “I debuted in 1991, made my first film in 1995. And now this year I have a film in its 30th year. I am happy to share this moment.”

 

He said, “Among the hundred days of the public calendar there is a day called ‘thirty.’ It means ‘to finally stand at thirty.’ Among life’s midday, that time of thirty seems to have come for the film festival too. I feel like only now the festival has become an actor itself.”

 

First in order, Sylvia Chang, a Taiwanese actress, director, producer, and screenplay writer who has worked for more than 50 years, was awarded the ‘2025 Camellia Award (2025 Camellia Award).’ This award was presented by Claudia Oldager (Claus Oldager), the representative of Chanel Korea, and he explained the selection background, emphasizing Sylvia Chang’s achievements as a creator and her meaningful contribution as a woman filmmaker.

 

In her acceptance remarks, Sylvia Chang said: “I am sincerely thankful to receive such a meaningful award,” recalling her journey, balancing multiple roles—actress, producer, wife, mother—and yet never letting go of her passion for film. She added, “The moments of challenge rather became the driving force pushing me forward,” invoking the flower language of the Camellia to express her devotion and deep affection for the cinema.

 

Sylvia Chang has played a leading role in Asian cinema over the past 50+ years, performing in over 100 works, spanning generations and genres. She directed works like <20 30 40> (2004), <Heart’s Whisper> (2015), <Love After Love: Women’s Stories> (2017), among others, proving her capability as director as well. Her artistic achievements and influence are evaluated as having significantly contributed to amplifying the voice of Asian women filmmakers.

 

Sylvia Chang’s comprehensive contributions have been recognized through international honors like the French Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier), the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Asian Film Awards, the Golden Mulberry Lifetime Achievement at the Udine Far East Film Festival, etc., and she has become a role model as a mentor who has guided the growth of younger filmmakers.

 

Then came the opening declaration on stage by Park Heong‑joon, Busan’s mayor, and Park Kwang‑su, chairman (or director) of the festival, officially announcing the start of the festival. Also, Chung Ji‑young, a senior director whose works have consistently interrogated social issues in modern Korean film history, was awarded the ‘Korean Cinema Achievement Award.’

 

Chung Ji‑young, now 79, continues to burn with creative will. In his acceptance remarks he said: “The beginning of film coincided with my life. I have lived nearly half a century in film. What allowed me to hold steady through shaking times were my colleagues, and above all sharing the mission that Korean cinema must go forward boldly and meaningfully.”

 

Chung also said, “Although Korean cinema is now faced with crisis, we are always ready to pierce through that crisis, to go forward into new, meaningful cinema,” offering encouragement and faith to younger filmmakers.

 

Also awarded this year is the Asia Filmmaker Award going to director Jafar Panahi. Despite political oppression and censorship, the Iranian master has continued creating works even though since 2000 he has been banned from leaving the country, and sometimes banned from filmmaking itself, yet he has persevered, delivering great resonance to the world film community.

 

In an acceptance message delivered via video, Panahi confessed: “Since I visited the Busan International Film Festival 17 years ago, I have never again been able to freely stand on this stage. I could not leave the country; I could not freely make films.”

 

He added: “But just as Korea has fought for cinematic freedom over the past forty years, I too continue that struggle in my own way. I dedicate this award to all independent filmmakers on the front lines of that struggle.”

 

There was an introduction of the newly established competition jury for this year, with Korean actress Han Hyo‑ju participating. Also, Jung Jin‑seok (or Jung Jin‑seok depending on romanization), who was appointed as Festival Chairman in March, made a stage greeting, calling this edition “a historic turning point,” expressing deep responsibility for the new direction of the festival.

 

In his stage greeting Jung Jin‑seok said: “Since I took the Chairman position on March 2, I have been running breathlessly. Although it has been busy, just being a part of this historic 30th Busan International Film Festival has been a deeply meaningful time.”

 

He explained that over the past months they have made many efforts to improve the operating structure of the festival, saying, “It is time for the Busan International Film Festival to grow beyond a mere festival into a global competitive film festival,” and emphasized that they will strive to be always lively, joyful, and more abundant.

 

Finally, the opening film <It Can't Be Helped> directed by Park Chan‑wook, with its cast Lee Byung‑hun, Son Ye‑jin, Park Hee‑soon, Lee Sung‑min, Yeom Hye‑ran, came on stage, and their introductions and remarks about the work were made.

 

Actor Son Ye‑jin, with a bright smile said: “Perhaps… it’s been really a long time since I came to BIFF. Since this year is the 30th anniversary, and our film was selected as the opening film, today feels like something I will truly never forget. I was worried it might rain today, but thankfully it did not, which also feels like a blessing. It’s the first time we are showing our film in Korea. But… strangely, I feel more nervous and more excited than when we screened in Venice. It feels like presenting it for the first time in my own front yard.”

 

Actor Park Hee‑soon then took the mic, introduced the nature of the film: “The film ‘<It Can't Be Helped> is a black comedy. It coexists with the most dramatic investigation and the strongest humor. So honestly… watching it, one might feel confused whether to laugh or to cry. But we cannot help it. It is that kind of film.”

 

As the atmosphere lightened with laughter, Park Hee‑soon added with a playful tone: “So I recommend exercise. I made it so you laugh. Just enjoy it, watch it well, and on your way home, do listen to Cho Yong‑pil’s ‘고추잠자리’ (Dragonfly) once. Then I believe you will think about our film once more.”

Lee Byung‑hun said: “I have been acting for 30 years, but I think there has never been a moment as emotionally overwhelming as now. I am so happy to be able to share this feeling as a gift with you all on this stage. Above all, I will never forget that as long as you are here, movies exist, and actors can exist. Director Park Chan‑wook’s new world awaits you.”

The Busan International Film Festival runs from the 17th to the 26th in multiple cinemas including the Busan Cinema Center, across 7 theaters and 31 screens, with a total of 328 films being screened city‑wide. Among them, Official Selections number 241 films across 64 countries, which is 17 more than last year. Including Community BIFF’s 87 films, the total is 328.
