이번 임기 들어 처음으로 진행되는 아시아 방문에서 트럼프 대통령은 투자 협력과 평화 구축 방안을 논의하고, 시진핑 중국 국가주석과의 대면 회담을 통해 무역 갈등 완화를 모색할 예정이다.  

 

외신에 따르면, 트럼프 대통령은 에어포스원에 동행한 기자들에게 “매우 포괄적인 합의를 이룰 수 있는 좋은 기회가 있다고 생각한다”고 밝혔다. 

 

그는 시 주석과의 회담에서 펜타닐 밀매 문제와 함께 미국산 대두 수입 중단 문제를 논의할 예정이라고 덧붙였다. 트럼프 대통령은 “우리 농민들이 제대로 대우받도록 하고 싶다. 그(시 주석)도 원하는 것이 있다”고 말했다. 

 

이번 순방은 최근 트럼프 대통령이 이스라엘과 하마스 간 휴전 및 인질 협정을 중재한 데 이어 외교적 입지를 강화하기 위한 행보로 풀이된다.

"일본·한국 방문…총 9천억 달러 투자 논의예정"

말레이시아를 떠난 트럼프 대통령은 일본과 한국을 연이어 방문한다. 이번 순방에서는 일본과 한국이 미국 내 공장 및 기타 프로젝트에 총 9천억 달러 규모의 투자를 약속하고, 그 대가로 미국이 일부 관세를 25%에서 15% 수준으로 완화하는 방안이 논의될 전망이다.

 

일본 방문에서는 첫 여성 총리 다카이치 사나에와 회담하고, 나루히토 일왕을 예방할 예정이다. 트럼프 대통령은 “아베 전 총리와 매우 가까웠던 다카이치 총리와 긴밀히 협력할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

While refueling in Qatar en route to Malaysia, Trump met with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani aboard the plane. “We discussed the implementation of security measures in Gaza, and everything is proceeding very smoothly,” Trump told reporters. “There’s no need for deep U.S. involvement at this stage.”

In Japan, Trump will hold talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi—the country’s first female premier—and pay a courtesy visit to Emperor Naruhito. “I had a very close relationship with former Prime Minister Abe,” Trump said. “I look forward to working closely with Prime Minister Takaichi as well.”

 

In Seoul, Trump’s key engagement will be the APEC Summit and his face-to-face meeting with Xi Jinping—the first since the two nations clashed over rare earth export controls and reciprocal tariffs.

 

Dismissing Speculation Over Meeting Kim Jong Un

Speculation has circulated that Trump might meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone during his stay in South Korea, but the White House has dismissed the possibility. “It’s not an easy call to make,” Trump joked. “They have plenty of nuclear weapons, but not much phone service.”
