[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] ‘WBGS 2025 국제심포지엄(The 9th International Symposium on Wide Bandgap Semiconductor 2025)’이 20일 오전 9시 해운대구 시그니엘 부산에서  개최됐다.

 

올해로 9회째를 맞은 이번 심포지엄은 전력반도체 핵심 소재인 와이드밴드갭(WBG) 분야의 정책·기술·산업 동향을 공유하고 글로벌 산·학·연 협력 네트워크를 넓히기 위해 마련됐다. 부산시는 2022년부터 기존 ‘SiC 국제심포지엄’에서 탄화규소(SiC)에 더해 질화갈륨(GaN) 소재까지 다루는 현 행사명으로 확대해 운영하고 있다.

 

■ 전력반도체 산업의 중요성

심포지엄에서 핵심적으로 다루는 전력반도체는 전기차·스마트폰 등 각종 전자기기에서 에너지 변환·제어·분배를 담당하는 필수 부품이다.

 

특히 전기차 분야에서는 실리콘(Si) 기반 반도체 대비 최대 90%까지 에너지 손실을 줄일 수 있는 SiC·GaN 소재의 장점이 부각되며 글로벌 수요와 관심이 급증하고 있다.

 

■ 주요 프로그램 및 참석자

올해 행사에는 국내외 산·학·연 관계자 250여 명이 참석했다. 주요 프로그램으로는 ▲연구 결과 발표 ▲전력반도체 국제자문위원 위촉 ▲국제탄화규소학술회의(ICSCRM) 2025 결과 보고가 진행됐다.

 

연구 발표에는 국내외 WBG 분야 석학들이 참여해 최신 기술 동향을 공유했다. 기조연사로는 ▲박철홍 현대모비스 전무 ▲신이치 니시자와 일본 큐슈대 교수 ▲세르게이 레샤노프 스웨덴국립연구소 박사 ▲히로시 야노 일본 쓰쿠바대 교수 ▲릴리 짜오 중국 하얼빈공업대 교수 등이 나섰다.

 

■ 국제자문위원 위촉

부산시는 올해 초청된 해외 전문가 4명을 전력반도체 국제자문위원으로 위촉했다. 위촉 대상은 ▲신이치 니시자와(큐슈대) ▲세르게이 레샤노프(스웨덴국립연구소) ▲히로시 야노(쓰쿠바대) ▲릴리 짜오(하얼빈공업대) 등으로, 부산의 전력반도체 산업 육성 전략 수립과 국제 협력 체계 확대에 조언 역할을 맡게 된다.

 

 ■ ICSCRM 2025 결과 공유

이번 심포지엄에서는 9월 14~19일 벡스코에서 열린 ‘제22회 국제탄화규소학술회의(ICSCRM) 2025’의 성과도 보고됐다. 국내 최초로 부산에서 열린 이 학술대회에는 40개국에서 2천여 명의 산·학·연 전문가가 참여해 학술 발표, 초청 강연, 전시회, 기업 상담회 등 다양한 프로그램을 진행했다.

 

박동석 부산시 첨단산업국장은 “부산은 전력반도체 특화단지를 중심으로 생태계 조성을 위한 중장기 로드맵을 추진하고 있다”며 “지산학 협력체계를 기반으로 부산을 전력반도체의 세계적인 중심지로 육성할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 또한 “이번 심포지엄이 국내를 넘어 세계 전력반도체 산업 발전을 부산이 선도하는 계기가 되길 기대한다”고 강조했다.

Now in its ninth year, the symposium was organized to share policy, technology, and industry trends in the field of wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor materials—key components in power semiconductors—and to expand global collaboration among academia, industry, and research institutions. Since 2022, the City of Busan has expanded the symposium from the former “SiC International Symposium” to its current title, adding gallium nitride (GaN) to its focus alongside silicon carbide (SiC).

 

■ Importance of the Power Semiconductor Industry

Power semiconductors, the central topic of the symposium, are essential components that convert, control, and distribute energy in electronic devices such as electric vehicles and smartphones.

 

In particular, SiC and GaN materials are receiving growing global attention as their use in electric vehicles can reduce energy loss by up to 90 percent compared to silicon (Si)-based semiconductors.

 

■ Main Programs and Participants

This year’s event brought together approximately 250 participants from domestic and international academia, industry, and research institutions. Key programs included ▲research presentations ▲appointment of international advisory board members for power semiconductors ▲and a report on the outcomes of the International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials (ICSCRM) 2025.

 

Esteemed experts from the WBG field delivered keynote lectures to share the latest technological trends. Speakers included ▲Cheol-Hong Park, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Mobis (Korea) ▲Shinichi Nishizawa, Professor at Kyushu University (Japan) ▲Sergey Leshchanov, Researcher at RISE – Research Institutes of Sweden ▲Hiroshi Yano, Professor at the University of Tsukuba (Japan) ▲and Lili Zhao, Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology (China).

 

■ Appointment of International Advisory Board Members

The City of Busan appointed four international experts invited to this year’s symposium as members of the Power Semiconductor International Advisory Board.

 

The appointees are ▲Shinichi Nishizawa (Kyushu University) ▲Sergey Leshchanov (RISE, Sweden) ▲Hiroshi Yano (University of Tsukuba) ▲and Lili Zhao (Harbin Institute of Technology), who will provide strategic guidance to strengthen Busan’s power semiconductor ecosystem and expand global cooperation.

 

■ Report on ICSCRM 2025 Outcomes

The symposium also included a presentation on the outcomes of the **22nd International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials (ICSCRM) 2025**, held at BEXCO from September 14 to 19.

Hosted in Korea for the first time, the conference brought together about 2,000 experts from academia, industry, and research institutions across 40 countries for academic presentations, invited lectures, exhibitions, and business meetings.

 

Dong-Seok Park, Director General of Busan’s Advanced Industry Bureau, stated, “Busan is pursuing a mid- to long-term roadmap to build a comprehensive power semiconductor ecosystem centered on its specialized industrial complex. Based on strong collaboration among local industry, academia, and research institutions, we aim to develop Busan into a global hub for power semiconductors.”

He added, “We hope this symposium will serve as a catalyst for Busan to lead not only the domestic but also the global power semiconductor industry.”
