[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시가 국립치의학연구원 유치를 위해 발걸음을 재촉하고 있다. 세계 최고 수준의 치과 의료·산업 생태계를 기반으로 한 부산의 강점이 속속 드러나면서, 향후 보건의료 R&D의 판도를 바꿀 국가기관의 입지를 두고 전국적 관심이 뜨겁다.

 

■ 국립치의학연구원, 내년 공모로 후보지 선정… 부산 TF “실질 전략 정교화”

부산시는 20일 오전 부산과학기술고등교육진흥원(BISTEP)에서 제5차 실무 전담팀(TF) 회의를 열고 유치 전략 고도화에 나섰다. 시 관계자는 “설립 타당성 연구가 내년 9월 완료되는 만큼 구체적 절차가 가시화되는 시점”이라고 설명했다.

 

정부는 최근“내년 중 공모 절차를 통해 후보지를 선정한다”고 밝힘에 따라, 시는 그간 주장해온 특정지역 사전 지정 배제·투명한 공모 방식이 관철된 것으로 보고 TF를 중심으로 대응 전략을 다듬고 있다.

 

■ 부산만의 ‘치의학 산업 풀 패키지’… 전국 최고 수준 입증

부산은 이미 국내 치의학 산업의 핵심 축으로 자리 잡았다. 식품의약품안전처에 따르면 부산의 의료기기 총생산액은 전국 2위, 수출액 역시 서울·경기·강원에 이어 4위권이다.

 

특히 치과용 의료기기는 전국 생산의 31%, 수출의 17%를 차지하는 국가 핵심 산업이다. 그중에서도 임플란트 고정체 분야는 생산·수출 모두 압도적 1위를 기록하고 있다.

 

부산에는 ▲오스템임플란트㈜ ▲㈜디오 ▲㈜코웰메디 ▲포인트임플란트㈜ 등 국내 톱10 임플란트 기업 중 4곳이 본사 또는 주요 생산기지를 두고 있어 세계적 경쟁력을 구축한 것으로 평가된다.

 

또한 부산대 치의학전문대학원을 포함해 11개의 치의학 교육기관, 치과 병·의원 1,353곳, 치과기공소 489곳, 종사자 약 5,200명 등 비수도권 최대 규모의 인력·산업 기반을 보유하고 있다.

 

부산시는 “연구 성과가 산업과 임상 현장으로 빠르게 확산되는 구조를 갖춘 도시”라며 **“연구원 설립 후 안정적 정착과 성장까지 가능하게 하는 거의 유일한 도시”**라고 강조했다.

 

■ 명지지구, 입지 경쟁력 ‘압도’… 공항·신항·스마트시티 삼각 연결

유력 후보지로 떠오른 강서구 명지지구는 김해국제공항·가덕도신공항·부산신항과 인접한 최상위 교통·물류 접근성, 스마트시티 에코델타시티의 헬스케어 단지와 연계한 미래형 산업 확장성, 쾌적한 정주 환경을 갖춘 명지국제신도시의 생활 인프라 등을 모두 갖춘 지역으로 평가받는다. 시는 “부지 확보 용이성, 정주 여건, 산업 연계성까지 갖춘 곳은 명지지구가 독보적”이라고 설명했다.

 

■ “치의학은 미래 전략산업… 유치에 시의 모든 역량 집중”

정나영 부산시 미래기술전략국장은 "치의학 산업은 전 세계적으로 급성장하는 고부가가치 분야이며, 국가 미래 경쟁력을 좌우하는 핵심 산업”이라며, "부산은 우수한 기술력과 탄탄한 산업 인프라를 모두 갖춘 만큼, 국립치의학연구원 설립에 가장 적합한 도시다. 유치 성공을 위해 시의 모든 행정 역량을 쏟겠다”고 말했다.

Busan is accelerating its campaign to host the National Dental Research Institute, positioning itself as the most competitive candidate on the strength of its globally recognized dental technology and industrial ecosystem.

 

The city announced on Nov. 20 that it convened the fifth meeting of its task force at the Busan Institute for Science and Technology Promotion to refine its bid strategy.

 

The National Dental Research Institute secured its legal basis in January 2024 through amendments to the Health and Medical Technology Promotion Act. A feasibility and master-plan study commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Welfare is set for completion in September 2025, paving the way for concrete establishment procedures.

 

Busan said it has repeatedly urged the central government to select the site through an open competition, not by pre-designating a region. City officials recently confirmed that the Health Ministry plans to choose candidate locations through a formal call for proposals next year.

 

Busan Showcases Strongest Dental Industry Cluster in Korea

The city’s task force intends to highlight Busan’s competitive edge by focusing on the need for the institute, local site suitability, and industrial connectivity.

 

Data from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety shows that Busan ranks second nationwide in total medical-device production and fourth in exports.

 

Dental devices account for 31% of domestic production and 17% of exports, making them one of Korea’s core medical-technology sectors. Dental implant fixtures in particular dominate the nation’s production and export rankings.

 

Busan is home to several leading implant manufacturers, including Osstem Implant, DIO, Cowellmedi, and Point Implant—four of Korea’s top ten implant companies with headquarters or major manufacturing bases in the city. The region also hosts world-class producers of dental instruments and materials, supporting rapid translation of research outcomes into commercial applications.

 

The city has 11 dental-related education institutions, including Pusan National University School of Dentistry, along with 1,353 dental clinics, 489 dental labs, and about 5,200 industry professionals—the largest concentration of dental workforce and infrastructure outside the capital area.

 

Myeongji District Emerges as Prime Candidate Site

Busan has designated Myeongji District in Gangseo-gu as its proposed site, citing its proximity to Gimhae International Airport, the future Gadeokdo New Airport, and Busan New Port.

The area also connects directly with the Eco Delta City smart-city project, enabling expansion into future healthcare and digital-health industries. Myeongji’s international residential district is considered to offer strong living conditions for researchers and staff.

 

City Vows Full Support for National-Level Project

“Dental medicine is a rapidly growing, high-value global industry and a core driver of future national competitiveness,” said Jeong Na-young, director of Busan’s Future Technology Strategy Bureau.

 

“With Busan’s advanced dental technology and robust industrial base, the city is confident it is the most suitable location for the National Dental Research Institute. We will mobilize all available resources to secure the bid,” she said.
