[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] ‘로또 1등 당첨’을 미끼로 허위 사이트를 운영하며 피해자 27명으로부터 12억 원 상당을 가로챈 조직적 사기단이 부산에서 붙잡혔다. 

부산서부경찰서는 2023년 11월부터 최근까지 약 3년간 허위 ‘로또 1등 예측’ 사이트 4곳을 운영하며 총 27명에게서 약 12억 원을 편취한 혐의로 피의자 10명을 검거했다고 21일 밝혔다. 경찰은 해외 도주 공범까지 추적해 일당 10명을 모두 검거하고 이 중 3명을 구속했다.

경찰에 따르면, 이들은 인터넷 쇼핑몰 운영 등을 명목으로 부산에 사무실을 차린 뒤 총책·자금관리·인출책·텔레마케터 등으로 역할을 나눠 조직적으로 범행을 벌였다. 피해자들에게는 “로또 1등 당첨을 시켜주겠다”며 접근해 ‘로또 공 제작비’, ‘로비 자금’ 등 각종 명목으로 돈을 요구한 것으로 드러났다.

수사는 지난 7월 17일 한 피해자가 “1등 당첨을 보장한다는 말에 속아 금전을 송금했다”고 신고하면서 시작됐다. 경찰은 약 4개월간 추적 수사를 이어가며 범행 현장 사무실을 압수수색하고, 베트남으로 도주한 인물과 도피를 도운 공범까지 모두 검거하는 데 성공했다.

확보된 압수품에는 휴대전화, 고객 응대 매뉴얼 등 조직적 범행을 뒷받침하는 자료들이 포함된 것으로 알려졌다.

경찰은 “임의로 조합한 번호를 ‘1등 번호’라고 속이는 수법으로 당첨 가능성은 사실상 없다”며 “당첨을 보장한다는 유혹에 현혹되지 말아야 하고, 특히 피해금을 돌려주겠다며 추가 비용을 요구하는 2차 사기에도 각별한 주의가 필요하다”고 강조했다. 경찰은 추후 추가 피해자가 있을 것으로 보고 수사를 확대하고 있다.

Busan police have arrested 10 members of a fraud ring that ran fake lottery-prediction websites for nearly three years, swindling 27 victims out of about 1.2 billion won (US$900,000). 

The Busan Seobu Police Station said Tuesday that the group operated four bogus websites promising to predict winning first-prize lottery numbers from November 2023 until earlier this year. Investigators said the suspects lured victims by claiming they could guarantee a jackpot win. Three suspects among them have been formally detained.

Police said the group rented office space in Busan under the guise of running an online shopping business and assigned roles within the operation, including a ringleader, fund manager, cash collectors and telemarketers.

The investigation began on July 17, when a victim reported being deceived by promises such as “We can make you a first-prize winner,” “We need money to produce lottery balls,” and “Lobbying funds are necessary to secure the win.” Officers pursued the case for four months, raiding the group’s office and tracking down all members, including one who had fled to Vietnam and another who helped him escape.

Police seized mobile phones and internal manuals used to guide the group’s interactions with customers, describing the materials as evidence of an organized fraud operation.

A Busan Seobu Police investigator warned the public not to trust any service claiming to guarantee lottery results. “Numbers that are arbitrarily combined and sent to victims have virtually no chance of winning,” the official said. “People should also be cautious of fraudsters who demand additional money under the pretext of retrieving previously lost funds.”

Police said they are continuing to look into whether more victims may come forward.
