[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시는 부산대학교 경제학부 김영재 명예교수를 부산연구원 제14대 원장으로 1일 임명했다. 

김 신임 원장은 이날부터 3년 임기의 부산연구원 원장으로서 부산의 중장기 발전전략과 주요 정책연구를 총괄하게 된다.  

부산대학교 경제학과 조교수로 부임한 이후 20년 넘게 교수로 재직한 그는 경제통상 분야에서 폭넓은 연구 성과를 쌓아왔다. 지난해 8월부터는 부산대 경제학과 명예교수로 강의와 연구를 이어오고 있으며, 부산경제진흥원 비상임이사와 비엔케이(BNK)부산은행 사외이사 등을 역임하며 공공·민간 부문을 아우르는 다양한 경험을 축적했다.  

이 같은 경력을 바탕으로 부산연구원을 이끌 적임자로 평가받아 지난 11월 24일 부산시의회 인사청문회에서도 ‘적격’ 판정을 받았다.  

김 원장은 “연구 전문성과 글로벌 협력 네트워크를 바탕으로 부산이 ‘글로벌 해양 허브 도시’로 도약할 수 있도록 정책적 기반을 다지겠다”며 “부산시민이 신뢰하는 거점 연구기관으로 발전시키기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.  

박형준 부산시장은 “인공지능과 빅데이터 시대를 선도할 혁신 연구개발로 부산의 지속 가능한 발전과 시민 삶의 질 향상에 힘써 달라”며 “연구 한 편이 부산의 미래와 시민 행복을 좌우한다는 책임감으로 중장기 전략 수립과 인구·산업 구조 변화 대응에 최선을 다해 달라”고 당부했다.  

[Here’s the English news version of the article] **Kim Young-jae Appointed as 14th President of Busan Institute for Regional Studies**

The city of Busan announced on December 1 that Kim Young-jae, an honorary professor at the Department of Economics at Pusan National University, has been appointed as the 14th president of the Busan Institute for Regional Studies (BIRS). The appointment ceremony was held at 9 a.m. in the protocol room on the seventh floor of Busan City Hall.  

Starting his three-year term on December 1, Kim will oversee research on city policies and the establishment of long-term strategies to drive Busan’s development.  

Kim served as a professor at Pusan National University for more than 20 years after joining the faculty as an assistant professor, building an extensive record of research in economics and trade. Since August 2025, he has continued teaching and research as an honorary professor. He has also served as a non-executive director of the Busan Economic Promotion Agency and an outside director of BNK Busan Bank, gaining professional experience across both public and private sectors.  

Based on his interdisciplinary experience, Kim was evaluated as the right person to lead BIRS and was deemed qualified in a confirmation hearing held by the Busan Metropolitan Council on November 24.  

“I will devote my full efforts to strengthening BIRS as a trusted policy research institution for the citizens of Busan by establishing an intellectual foundation for the city’s vision as a ‘global maritime hub,’” Kim said after his appointment.  

Mayor Park Heong-joon urged the new president to play a key role in advancing innovative research and development in response to the era of artificial intelligence and big data. “Please dedicate yourself to improving the quality of life for citizens and to shaping Busan’s future through research that responds to changes in demographics and industrial structures,” Park said.
