[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 제10대 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 커스티 리 코번트리(Kirsty Leigh Coventry) 위원장은 한국의 차기 올림픽 유치 추진 가능성을 긍정적으로 평가하며 “한국은 올림픽 운동의 핵심 파트너”라고 밝혔다.

 

2일 오후 부산 벡스코에서 열린 세계반도핑기구(WADA) 총회 직후 가진 기자회견에서 코번트리 위원장은 “한국은 최근 두 번의 대형 국제대회를 훌륭하게 치러낸 경험을 갖고 있으며 IOC와 매우 강한 파트너십을 유지하고 있다”며 “정부로부터 스포츠와 국제대회 유치에 대한 높은 관심을 직접 확인했다”고 말했다.  

 

그는 한국의 유치 추진 움직임에 대해 공식 평가를 자제하면서도, “한국은 스포츠 분야에서 지속적으로 진전하고 있는 국가”라고 강조했다.

 

■ “한국, 도핑 대응의 핵심 파트너… ‘원팀(one team)’ 정신 중요”

코번트리 위원장은 도핑 문제와 관련해 한국의 역할을 높이 평가했다. 그는 “도핑에 맞서기 위해서는 모든 국가가 하나의 팀, 즉 ‘원팀(one team)’처럼 움직여야 한다”며 “한국은 도핑 문제에 대해 강력하고 일관된 목소리를 내온 매우 중요한 파트너”라고 말했다. 또한 그는 “평창동계올림픽과 강원동계청소년올림픽을 성공적으로 개최한 한국은 올림픽 운동에서 신뢰받는 국가”라고 말했다.

 

■ 한국의 차기 올림픽 유치 가능성

한국의 차기 올림픽 유치 준비 움직임에 대해, 코번트리 위원장은 먼저 한국과 IOC의 협력 관계를 강조하며 “한국은 최근 몇 년 동안 두 차례의 굵직한 국제 스포츠 대회를 성공적으로 치렀다”라며 “평창동계올림픽과 강원 청소년동계올림픽은 한국이 올림픽 운동에서 얼마나 중요한 파트너인지를 보여주는 사례”라고 말했다.

 

이어 그는 “한국올림픽위원회와 IOC는 매우 강한 파트너십을 유지하고 있다”며 “한국 정부의 스포츠 관심도 역시 상당하다”고 평가했다. 특히 그는 “(최휘영)문화체육관광부 장관과의 면담을 통해 한국 정부가 국제 스포츠 이벤트 유치에 매우 높은 관심을 갖고 있다는 사실을 직접 확인했다”고 설명했다.

 

다만 공식 유치 절차와 관련된 직접적인 언급은 피하며, “공식적으로 특정 국가의 유치 계획을 논의하기에는 아직 시기상조이지만, 한국은 국제 스포츠 무대에서 계속해서 중요한 역할을 할 것”이라고 말했다.

 

그는 “한국이 앞으로도 스포츠를 발전시키고 국제대회를 유치하려는 의지를 지속적으로 보여줄 것으로 기대한다”고 덧붙였다.

 

■ 올림픽 휴전(Olympic Truce) 

코번트리 IOC 위원장은 올림픽 휴전(Olympic Truce)과 관련된 질문에 대해 유엔에서의 최근 논의 상황과 국제사회의 반응을 상세히 설명했다.

 

그는 먼저 “올림픽 휴전 결의안이 최근 유엔에서 이탈리아 대표부 주도로 통과됐으며, 30개가 넘는 회원국이 지지 의사를 밝혔다”며 “이는 스포츠가 지닌 중립성과 희망의 메시지를 다시 한 번 확인한 의미 있는 장면이었다”고 말했다.

 

이어 그는 휴전의 중요성에 대해 “올림픽 휴전은 선수들이 안전하게 이동하고 경쟁할 수 있도록 분쟁과 긴장을 완화하자는 국제사회의 약속이며, 스포츠가 정치적 갈등을 넘어서 평화와 화합의 역할을 하길 바라는 상징적 선언”이라고 설명했다.

 

휴전이 실제로 지켜질 수 있을지, 또는 위반될 경우 IOC가 어떤 조치를 취할 수 있는지를 묻는 질문에는 “현재로서는 모든 국가가 이 합의를 존중해 주길 바란다”며 “만약 휴전이 깨지는 상황이 발생한다면, 그때 필요한 논의를 진행하게 될 것”이라고 신중한 입장을 밝혔다.

 

코번트리 위원장은 이날 발언을 통해 올림픽 휴전이 단순한 선언이 아니라, 국제사회가 스포츠의 중립성과 평화의 가치를 지키기 위해 함께 노력해야 하는 중요한 약속임을 거듭 강조했다.

 

■ IOC 위원장의 역할

IOC 내 조정자 역할을 묻는 질문에는 공동체적 가치와 ‘단합’을 강조했다. 코번트리 위원장은 “IOC는 하나의 큰 가족과 같기 때문에 의견 충돌은 있을 수 있다”며 “그러나 우리를 하나로 묶는 것은 결국 스포츠이며, 그 중심에는 항상 선수들이 있어야 한다”고 말했다.

 

그는 이어 “앞으로 7년 동안 제가 내릴 모든 결정이 모두에게 환영받지는 않을 것”이라면서도 “언론과 스포츠 공동체가 IOC를 감시하고 함께 가는 것은 매우 중요한 일”이라고 강조했다.

■ WADA 기준 논란

일부 선수들이 제기한 ‘WADA 기준 적용 차별’ 문제에 대한 질문에는 선수 참여 확대의 중요성을 언급했다. 그는 “현재 진행 중인 코드 리뷰 절차에서 선수들이 어느 때보다 적극적으로 목소리를 내고 있다”며 “WADA가 선수 의견을 듣고 논의하는 과정 자체가 긍정적인 변화이며, 이러한 열린 소통을 통해 제도는 더욱 개선될 것”이라고 평가했다.

 

■ 트랜스젠더 규정

트랜스젠더 선수 관련 규정 마련 상황을 묻는 질문에는 진행 경과를 상세히 설명하며 신중한 입장을 보였다. 그는 “작업 그룹이 아직 논의를 진행 중이며, 지금 단계에서 결과를 단정해 말하기에는 이르다”라며, "이미 국제연맹 대부분과 전문가, WADA 그리고 다양한 선수들과 면담을 진행하며 폭넓은 의견을 듣는 중이다. 모두가 같은 방향으로 갈 수 있는 합의를 찾아내는 것이 목표이며, 그 과정에 대해 낙관적으로 보고 있다”고 밝혔다.

 

올림픽 선수 출신인 그는 한국 선수들을 향한 메시지도 전달했다. 그는 “밀라노-코르티나 동계올림픽에서 한국 선수들을 응원할 날을 기대하고 있다”며 “남은 기간 묵묵히 준비하고 최선을 다해달라”고 말했다.

Addressing a question about the Olympic Truce, Coventry provided details on recent discussions at the United Nations and the response from the international community.

 

“The Olympic Truce resolution was recently adopted at the UN under the leadership of the Italian mission, with support from more than 30 member states,” she said. “It was a meaningful moment that reaffirmed the neutrality of sport and its message of hope.”

 

She explained the significance of the Truce further: “The Olympic Truce represents a commitment by the international community to ease tensions and conflicts so that athletes can travel and compete safely. When asked what would happen if the Truce is violated, Coventry responded cautiously: “For now, we hope all nations will respect the agreement. Should a violation occur, we will discuss the necessary steps at that time.”

 

She emphasized that the Truce is not merely symbolic but a collective commitment to uphold the neutrality and peaceful values of sport.

 

■ Role of the IOC President

Regarding the IOC President’s role in resolving internal disagreements, Coventry highlighted unity and shared purpose.

 

“The IOC is like one big family, and disagreements are natural,” she said. “But what unites us is sport, and at the center of everything must be the athletes.”

 

She added, “Not every decision I make over the next seven years will be universally welcomed, but it is essential for the media and the sports community to hold the IOC accountable and move forward together.”

When asked about concerns raised by athletes regarding inconsistency in applying WADA rules, Coventry emphasized the growing involvement of athletes in the review process.

 

“During this ongoing code review, athletes have been more vocal than ever,” she said. “The fact that WADA is openly listening to athletes is already a positive step, and through this dialogue, the system will continue to improve.”

 

■ Transgender Participation Regulations

Regarding the development of guidelines for transgender athletes, Coventry explained the current progress and approach.

 

“The working group is still in discussion, and it is too early to draw conclusions,” she said. “They have already spoken with most international federations, experts, WADA, and a wide range of athletes, gathering diverse perspectives. The goal is to reach a consensus that allows everyone to move in the same direction, and I am optimistic about the process.”

 

■ Message to Korean Athletes

As a former Olympian herself, Coventry offered a message to Korean athletes.

“We look forward to cheering for the Korean athletes at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics,” she said. “Please stay focused and continue working hard in the months ahead.”
